Maxitours at super Shrigley Hall

Last nights heavy downpour didn’t stop the well-draining Shrigley Hall course from hosting todays event. Indeed the main issue was some morning mist which reduced visibility for the early starters. More than one team informed me that they were much better when they couldn’t see where they were going.

The final month of Winter begins tomorrow and it was great to see the snow drops appearing around the golf course, there were even a few daffodils looking ready to bloom. Hopefully we have broken the back of winter and a glorious Summer awaits us..

Humble Jonny Barton was late checking in.

His team couldn’t remember his handicap – I think he’s a 15 or 16 suggested Chris Walley.

‘I’m much worse than that’ Admitted Jonny when he eventually turned up. ‘I’m surprised my team didn’t know what a bad player I am.’

He actually played well today and was delighted with a 4th place finish.

Three teams shared 1st place on 87 points. This was a great score despite a few forward tees as the course was still playing long and tough.

Sun tanned Mick Mahon and his team of Richard Palmer, Nick Tomlinson and Alan Moorby recently returned after a successful showing in the Algarvian Classic, they continued their fine form finishing 3rd on the card play off.

Martin Humphries, Barry Caldwell, Paul Woods and Jonny Lee took 2nd but picking up 46 points on the closing nine was Dukinfields John Harrop, Chris Burnett, Neil Hodgkiss and Lee Compton.

Excellent golf, well played guys.

Thanks for all your support today.

A lovely day was enjoyed by all.

Maxitours at flipping cold Fleetwood

Many thanks to the nearly full field of Maxitours competitors for braving the elements at Fleetwood today. The rain was not too heavy but a brisk and cool Westerly wind made for testing conditions.

The fairways and greens were firm and dry and players shoes were a little damp after the rain but there were no muddy trousers and the links turf was a pleasure to play off.

‘Those greens are terrific!’ Reported Dave Rhodes – ‘They are slick!’

The course was playing so long into the heavy wind Jim Cox thought he was playing with a punctured golf ball. ‘That was tough’ Admitted the Denton legend. The wind strengthened later in the day as storm Eowyn started to hit the mainland.

I had a quick drive into Fleetwood to have a quick look around the promenade and other attractions. I thought that us golfers were daft but there was a lone chap happily sailing his model boat on the choppy boating lake. Living the dream.

I knew it was going to be a long day when John Fitzsimmons gave me his player’s names this morning.

‘I’m playing with Barry Wilson, Steve Aspinall and his wife Barbara but I can’t remember Barbara’s surname’ He told me.

‘Its not Aspinall is it?’ I asked him. ‘Oh yeah, that’s right’

Thanks so much for playing today everyone – the forecast wasn’t great but your integrity is always appreciated and part of the reason we get invited back to these clubs each year.

Scoring was tough but the gritty Denton team of Neale Laurent, John Harrop, Gary Berrisford and Lee Compton pipped the Sandiway team on the card play off.

Well played lads- great fighting.

Yours in golf, Tim

Algarvian Classic Results

Final round at high quality Quinta South

Once again perfect golfing conditions greeted players at Quinta South today.
The early starters battled to avoid the wooden spoon but it was the Knutsford team who will be hanging their heads in shame as their loved ones greet them at Manchester airport tomorrow.
There was some great golf played today epitomized by retired solicitor Jim Rymer who made a majestic hole in one on his 16th hole to ensure a fantastic finale to his tournament.
Mick Mahons team had the best score of the day with a superb 84 points on a tough golf course with greens running at around 11 on the stimp meter.

In the overall Algarvian masters event Pete Ledger, Jim Clarke, Graham Jackson and new recruit Norrie Irwin took third place with a -15 score of 239.
The housewife favourite Mere team of Alan Baxter, Mark Hudson, Andy McEwan and Dave Mulligan took second place on -18 after a 79 point haul today but it was the Prestbury team who were victorious.
These guys were on my first Algarvian masters in 2017 and have been ever present since then. This is the first time they have featured in the top three so to win by eight shots is an outstanding performance. Huge congratulations to Steve Hall, Chris Adams, Martin Prescott and Gary Titchen. Lovely blokes and now Champions of the Algarve!
An amazing week. I love running this event.

Thanks to everyone for your integrity.
Brilliant.

Next years trip will be on the corresponding dates – let me know if you want to join us.

Tim

Results from outstanding Ombria

Algarvian Masters at outstanding Ombria.

Shorts were the order of the day as stunning blue skies and glorious sunshine greeted Maxitours overseas players for the second round of the Algarvian Masters at Ombria today.

The picturesque course is set among peaceful rolling hills and is a real treat to play.
‘I love it here’ Declared well-travelled Graham Jackson. ‘I think this is my favourite course.’
‘What a lovely pretty course!’ Announced intelligent John Simons- ‘I really enjoyed that.’
Alan Baxter is not daft. He was in bed at 10.30pm last night and his team scored a solid 85 points to secure 2nd place overall. He owns a few race horses and the next one he has running is on Thursday and is aptly called ‘Not too tired.’ Lump on guys.

The Prestbury millionaire bankers Chris Adams, Martin Prescott, Steve Hall and Gary Titchen were leading yesterday and they looked nervous this morning with the pressure of winning a maxitours top weighing heavily on their shoulders. Would they crumble? Certainly not! They recorded a solid 86 to increase their lead to three.

Best of the day was from Mike Dobson, Sean Finlay, Ben Davies and Tony Baldwin with a superb 89 points.
‘Our team had a fantastic time out there.’ Reported dog-loving Dobson. He collected an impressive five birdies as Ombria became one of his favourite golfing venues.
Biggest movers of the day was Ian Gemmells young at heart Stockport quartet with a super 84 points.

We play the award-winning Quinta South tomorrow as the tournament comes to an exciting conclusion.
Will Alan Baxter be in bed at 10.30pm again tonight?

I doubt it.

Take it steady guys,

Tim.

Results from Laranjal

Wow! What a day.

The Laranjal greens were possibly the finest I have ever seen in my 35 years impersonating a golf professional. If you missed a putt I am afraid that it was definitely your fault.

The golf course was just majestic and the sun continues to shine. Players are yet to see a cloud.

There were plenty of balls hitting trees throughout the day and the Laranjal lakes also took their toll. It was not only the ducks that looked anxious as players prepared to hit their shots. Gary Kirkwood managed to hit a portuguese greenkeeper with a very wayward tee shot. His love life may never be the same again.

Taking the early lead with 80 points was the Prestbury team of Chris Adams, Gary Titchen, Steve Hall and Martin Prescott. The other Prestbury team currently lies in last place.

Mere’s Alan Baxter, Mark Hudson, Andy McEwan and Dave Mulligan are in second with 78 points.

The rest of the field are closely bunched as we head to the fantastic Ombria course for round two.

Last years champions Geoff Bickerton and his men had a quiet start to their defence with 73 points. Plenty of golf to play however.

Get to bed guys. You know it makes sense.
