Maxitours at Hazel Grove
Another rain- free Summers day was enjoyed by Maxitours players. Hazel Grove and top young professional James Rowlands looked after us extremely well once again and this lovely venue is a real favourite on the calendar. The course was manicured well and the fairways were excellent despite a lack of growth due to the exceptionally cool Spring weather conditions .
Greg Adams is a lovely lad and a talented golfer but he was driving his dad Chris crazy today after he missed a couple of short putts. ‘Are you lining up the ball properly?’ enquired his dad. ‘Yes replied Greg I am using the nike swoosh to line it up.’ In the clubhouse after play there was a heated family discussion which remains unresolved about whether the putts were missed due to the swoosh which has a slight curve to the left. As my son is finding out, Dad’s are always right.
The highlight of John Stubbs round was in the clubhouse after play. ‘Oh I’ve just found a golf ball in my pocket’ said the delighted retired policeman who lost more than his fair share on the way round.
John Horsley’s wife Rachel was once again to blame for his poor performance today. Most women wish their husband good luck on their way out to golf but Rachel’s three words of advice to him each week are ‘don’t finish last’. Instead of aiming for the main prize John is just delighted to finish away from bottom spot. Luckily Dennis Whelan’s team came to his rescue this week with a spectacularly bad 55 points.
Wimbledon is just around the corner and heavy handed Kevin Chisnell got his playing partners in the mood as they watched him chipping to and fro across the 16th green.’ it was just like watching a tennis match’ observed a dizzy John Dickenson.
Big Ian Buxton is a terrific traditional baker from Darwin in Lancashire. He gets up at 2am each morning to bake nearly 100 loaves. Last week at Hesketh he very kindly gave me a tasty white loaf and a big blueberry pie. Much to my dismay that evening my wife and children got to the loaf before I did and then dog jumped on the table in our front room and ate my slice of pie. This week Ian turned up empty handed but he did play like a pudding as his team scored 65 points.
In today’s event Brian Greenbank and Brian Ankers took the nearest the pin prizes. At the top of the leader board Archie Tahir and his team kept up their good work to finish 3rd with 83 pts. Young Adam Frost from Castle Hawk was their star player as he enjoyed his first Maxitours outing.
Jim Caldwell’s(10) Wilmslow team recorded their best finish for two years with an excellent 84 points which was good enough for second place. Steve Sharcroft(24), Andrew Aherne(17) and Peter Maxwell(12) completed the talented quartet.
Winning their first event for well over a year was Mottram Hall’s Simon Conway(10) , Mark Williams(8) and brothers Neil (13) and Stuart Royle(5). There were not many shots flying around but Stuart managed to birdie three holes on the back nine, two of which collected four points for his team. Well played chaps!
Thanks to all players for you terrific support once again today.

Maxitours Footjoy Open at terrific Tytherington
Tytherington was the latest magnificent golf course to host a Maxitours event. The layout is perhaps the best in Cheshire and as Dave ’14 bunkers in one day’ Crowther will testify, there are plenty of exciting hazards to avoid.
Young Alex Elliott(scr) turned out in his first Maxitours event of the year. He has caddied full time on the European tour this year for Tom Murray who had a superb top ten finish in Sweden last week- well done. Alex played well despite being mentally drained from the struggle of deciding what to spend his 7 and a half per cent on.
Andy Hall, Mick Fenton and Steve Owen were trying to pick the long straw in the car park to avoid partnering the usually consistent Mick Holmes who is struggling for form recently. Unfortunately all three drew the short straw when they signed in and found out to their dismay that it was a team of four event.
Sale Golf Club’s Simon Poucher is a lovely man who could do with a little bit of arrogance to improve his game. I asked him if he was currently on form. ‘I have my moments but as a general rule I am just a s*** golfer.’
Incredibly there were two different golfers called John Buckley playing today in two consecutive four balls. On conclusion of the round the two teams were hotly debating which of them was the worst player. ‘He can’t possibly be worse than our John Buckley’ said an exasperated Anthony Grimley. According to the scorecard stats which were studied long and hard the John Buckley in Phil Smeathers team wins the award as the worst John Buckley playing today. Congratulations John.
Wealthy Dave Harlow made his money due to making plenty of shrewd business decisions. He always looks well dressed and has the latest set of expensive golf clubs in the latest new golf bag. As I was talking to him on the patio after his excellent round I spotted perhaps the worst rescue club I have ever seen sitting out like a sore thumb in his bag. ‘What the heck is that?’ I asked. ‘Yeah it’s hopeless’ he replied ‘I can’t hit it, I only have it in there because without it I wouldn’t have 14 clubs in my bag’.
In today’s event a late collapse by Jon Farrell’s North Manchester team saw them drop three shots in the last two holes to finish just out of the prizes. Straight hitting Jim Caldwell and his Wilmslow team played solid golf to finish in fifth place. Top dentist Anthony Grimley and his team finished in fourth. Well played fellers.
Chris Adams(13), Paul Wild(8), ex Captain Paul Allen(9) and Steve Hall(18) are members at nearby Prestbury Golf Club. They represented their home course well and were surprised and delighted to finish in third with 82 points. Paul Wilde made a wonderful birdie at the tough last hole which had damaged so many teams chances.
Second place went to Paul Ward(13), Kristian Oakes(9), Saj Hashmi(12)and Rick Abraham(9). The Wychwood Park team are used to hitting the ball into water hazards on their home course and they collected just two points on the 12th and 15th holes after going for a swim which cost them dearly. Earlier in the day Paul Ward was the only man in the field to start his round with a superb birdie on the 1st hole.
Phil Mickleson has just overtaken Tiger Woods as the highest paid golfer in the world. Ferrari driving Colin Lynch(9) was arguably the highest paid Maxitours golfer in today’s field however unlike Mickleson he has to rely very heavily on his off course earnings. The team of Lynch, Stewart Cragg(15) and Clint Jolley(14) were one short before I found a late replacement last night in Carl Kennedy(12). Jolley and Cragg played nicely on the front nine before charismatic Blackpool North shore legend Lynch started rolling in the putts on the back nine. Super-sub Kennedy then holed his wedge shot on the 16 as the team collected 8 points on that particular hole! There was a loud cheer on the 18th as Lynch rolled in a memorable birdie putt to win in style. Great golf chaps, well played.
Thanks to all for your terrific support today. Yours in Golf, Tim

Hesketh is the oldest Golf Club in Southport and it was looking in great condition in the June sunshine as over 100 Maxitours competitors enjoyed this superb course. Bill Melia was one of the oldest golfers in Southport today and he also looked in great condition. Bill had a great day ‘when are we coming back?’ he desperately wanted to know. ‘That was terrific!’
Thanks to Paul Corker and his brilliant Hesketh team for their hospitality.Mick McCurdy and his partner played with two guys they had never met before, the likeable duo Ray Clowes and Les French. He was kindly helping them around the course as they had not played Hesketh before. On the seventeenth hole he informed them ‘You can hit your second shot over the trees onto the green- watch me! McCurdy then shanked his shot and it whistled between Rays legs.
Top European tour players try and stay positive and strive to get into ‘the zone’. They try to purely focus their energy on hitting fairways and greens. I tried to give Trevor Webb a positive mental boost as he exited the clubhouse ‘Come on Trevor, you are due a good score today!’. ‘Have you seen that rough?’ Came the reply.
Nigel Davenport and Peter Riley knew it was going to be a long day when they threw the balls up in the air on the first tee and their colleagues Neil Ritchie and Chris Grey started hugging each other in delight as their balls nestled next to each other. Sure enough Neil and Chris beat their playing partners by 8 shots.
Dog loving Dave Stanhope turned down the chance of playing golf with me on Tuesday as he was ‘swimming with his dog’ which is having some canine physiotherapy. Today he was swimming with the ducks as he hit his ball into the large lake on the 5th, ha!
In today’s event Sale Golf Clubs Paul Browne(9) and Dale Wallace(11) recorded their best ever finish. ‘Dale from Sale’ had three birdies and also picked up nearest the pin on the 16th. Well played.
Carl Bolus(7) and Colin Oakley(8) from Marriot Worsley also had their best finish with 42 points and they picked up an impressive 23 points the tougher back nine to take 3rd place.
Christine Kelsall(22) looked shocked when her husband looked into her eyes in the clubhouse before play and informed her that they had better split up. Luckily for attractive Christine her husband was talking about today’s pairings and Andrew Richardson(11) was the man who took advantage. He was delighted to finish in second after Christine had the round of her life.
Giles Terry(14) plays badly in Maxitours most weeks with big Dave Antrobus, unfortunately Dave’s new puppy has taken priority over his golf so horse owning Alan Baxter(7) was his even bigger replacement. Intelligent Baxter was a member here 30 years ago and he hit some terrific little 7 iron chip and run shots under the wind to take his first ever Maxitours victory. Great golf chaps!
Last years’ Knutsford Captain, Graham Pike, scored a superb hole in one on the beautiful par three second. ‘We were going like a train!’ said playing partner Nigel Eckersley after they scored 9 points on the first three holes. Unfortunately they ran out of steam, lost their tracks and came well and truly off the rails as the round progressed but they were ‘chuffed’ with 44th place.
Next week Maxitours goes to Tytherington Golf and Country Club -home to lots of attractive female leisure club members. ChecK- in is in the conservatory which overlooks the gym. Mick Mahon’s team always arrive up really early for this event for some reason and they enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the seats which overlook the aerobics class.
Thanks to everyone for your support once again, Yours in Golf, Tim.
