Maxitours At Vale Royal
Heavy overnight rain cleared away and the glorious sun shone for the 130 maxitours competitors at stunning Vale Royal Abbey today. Each year the course continues to mature and owner Steve Graham, who played today, has every reason to be very proud of his club. Manager Ian Embury runs a very tight ship and the golf course was first class.
Todays event was a team of four Am Am with the best two stableford scores to count. Anton Ellis said his team prefer to call it ‘the least worst two scores to count’ and they were delighted to finish last with 61 points.
Mike Spencer has soup for lunch most days. His wife enjoys cooking with a nice quality wooden spoon and she has a nice collection as Mike regularly brings her one home from the golf course. Today Mike actually played with his lovely wife Maria and their two offspring but there will be no soup stirring this week after the family scored a commendable 79 points.
In todays event the scoring was extremely tight especially at the top of the leaderboard where just three points separated the first ten teams.
Willie Morgan(10) was famous for his excellent wing play at Manchester United. Today the living legend rolled back the years and made another late run as he picked up 4 shots for his team over the closing five holes. His Vale Royal team just missed out on the prizes.
Taking third place with 87 points was the team of firemen from Leigh, Phil Dermott(9), Carl Dermott(10), Mark Riley(6) and Jamie Vagon(9). It was clear they have been practicing hard on their putting during another quiet shift at the station as Phil coolly rolled in three excellent birdie putts on the back nine.
Eddy Sterlings(6) team from Wychwood also played great golf on the easier back nine and the talented Wain brothers, Neil (+2) and Lee (scr) recorded six birdies on their closing holes as they also scored 87 points. Saj Hashmi(10) was the less talented 4th member of the team.
Jason Duffner lookalike Mike Johnson(9) (beer belly, rarely smiles) from Astbury today played alongside his engineering colleagues Mark Robinson(10), Stuart Coupe(11) and Matthew Wiggins(22). After an average front nine of 41 points they also played terrific golf on the way home and Coupes dramatic birdie on the last gave them first place by a single shot.
Many thanks for your terrific support today,
Yours in Golf,
Tim.
