Maxitours at Cracking Crewe Golf Club

Crewe Golf Club is the most Southerly venue on the Maxitours calendar. All todays players agreed it was well worth the journey. The greens were hand cut and ironed by the respected team of greenkeepers helping to enhance Crewe’s growing reputation as an excellent golfing destination. The catering and hospitality was also absolutely first class. Dave Wheeler ‘four time Cheshire matchplay champion’ is also perhaps the nicest pro in the region.

A few teams were delayed and had to rush on to the first tee after there was a crash involving a refrigerated truck on the M6. Hundreds of frozen chickens were strewn across the carriageway. Unfortunately for Bill Gillings they were the only birdies he saw all day as his team struggled to score 77 points.

It was great to see the Knutsford Golf Club Captain playing today and the good looking John Phibbs continued his recent fine form with some impressive golf on the back nine.

Yellow tees, superbly fast running and receptive greens together with Augusta-like fairways led to the best scoring of the year at this lovely Cheshire course. Not all players were happy with their teams’ efforts however: ‘Playing with these guys is like trying to ride a bike uphill without a chain’ complained long suffering Tony Wilson after his team once again narrowly missed out on the prizes.

Dunham Forests’ Adam Hart(7) played alongside his Didsbury friends Malc Wells(2) Bob Vickers (6) and Steve Hamlett(16) they enjoyed the early morning benign conditions and scored 89 points to take third place. The Disley team of Billy Whyte(22), Mark Woodhead(12), George Maxwell(20) and Paul Kuiper(12) then scored a terrific 93 points which looked good enough to win. Kuiper was the main man picking up three birdies on the back nine.

Brian Gibbons(10) from Upton-by-Chester has played in nearly twenty Maxitours events and before today he had never had a top ten finish, his favourite pop group is ‘Wrong Direction’. Today the erratic ten handicapper played ‘definitely the best golf of my life’ as he rolled in four tremendous birdies and team mate Russ Brooks (8) was also thunder-struck as he managed a career best five gross birdies. Dave Murphy(10) and Mark Kilgallen(16) also contributed well for a magnificent 95 Points and the score of the year! Great golf chaps.
