Maxitours at blossoming Ringway
The first Maxitours event of the Spring saw the fabulous Ringway Golf Club bathed in glorious sunshine this morning. The freshly mown golf course looked a real picture and was a credit to their talented grounds staff.
With Mothers Day just around the corner wild swinging author Dave Wilson was literally smelling the flowers during his round today. He was to be seen regularly inspecting the local daffodils as the vast majority of his drives missed the generous parkland fairways.
Anton Ellis brought a group of old friends from Knutsford Golf Club with him to Ringway. With a combined age of 302 the team members were delighted to not only finish their round but to finish their round with the same ball they started with. ‘Unfortunately we don’t hit it far enough to lose our balls anymore’ said an upbeat Ellis.
It is widely accepted that the three greatest sporting comebacks of all time were Botham’s Ashes in 1981, followed by Liverpool’s Champions league win against AC Milan in 2005 and then the Ryder Cup miracle at Medinah in 2012. This top three was challenged today however when Neville Dennis returned to the sporting arena after two serious operations and seven months away from the game.
Seventy seven year old Neville rolled back the years and also rolled in three wonderful net birdies to help his team take fourth place and seal the Maxitours seniors prize. His legendary golfing status is now fully confirmed.
Another Maxitours player rolling back the years was John Hilton. He always either signs his scorecard quietly in the car park or by the results desk where there is always a healthy supply of writing utensils. As he walked into the Clubhouse after his round John was quick to spot Gemma the attractive blond waitress (who is a firm favourite amongst many Maxitours players) and made an impressively quick diversion to the bar ‘excuse me love have you got a pen I could borrow?’ he smoothly asked, closely followed up with his best movie star smile.
The early starters made the most of the pleasant sunny conditions and Airline pilot Dave Keen(13) helped his Bramall teammates Charlie Rooney(14), Ian King(8) and Russell Humphries(19) take third place with 82 points. Paul Dalby(3), Phil Vokes(2), Barney Ross(3) and Paul Sherlock(5) were in the fourth match out and their 84 points led the field for most of the afternoon.
Winning today however were the likeable and ever-present low handicap Tytherington team of Andy Stubbens(4), Martin Firth(6), Gareth Lover(7) and their secret weapon -‘dangerous Andy Hockenhull.(19)’ The affable high handicapper usually has plenty of wild shots in his locker. Today he had the round of his life as he rolled in three long birdie putts to secure a resounding victory (and also a resounding Maxitours handicap reduction.) Great golf chaps, very well played indeed.
Many thanks for your support to all who played today and also thanks to Ringway Club Manager Fiona Cornelious and renowned Club Professional Nick Ryan for their valuable help and expertise. Yours in Golf, Tim.
