Maxitours at classy Clitheroe
A superb Autumn day greeted over 100 competitors as Maxitours visited Clitheroe for the first time in its nine year history. It was well worth the wait:
‘What a course’ said Mike Spencer
‘Tremendous ‘ commented Ian Ainsworth.
‘Magnifico’ sung John Dickenson
‘I can’t remember but I think that was better than sxx’ was how an anonymous member expressed his admiration.
Kevin Chisnall was amazed at how manicured the golf course was. ‘I tried to pick a loose blade of grass to throw in the air to see where the wind was but the fairways were so immaculate I couldn’t find one!’
Thanks to everyone at this wonderful course for your superb hospitality throughout the day we were looked after extremely well.
Joe Kirwan turned up today wearing some bright green golf pants. ‘You can get 2 pairs for £16 from JD Sports’ announced the delighted millionaire. If you also want to look as ridiculous as Joe the nearest store is located at the Trafford centre and I am assured there are plenty of trousers left in the sale.
Mike Emerson asked for a slightly earlier tee time as he had to get back for the ‘big match’ tonight. I asked him if he though City would beat Juventus but he informed me he was watching ‘Harrogate against North Ferriby’. Sad but true.
Mick Mahon is enjoying his golf much more now he has taken the cardboard out of his titleist cap. He has been playing with a slightly chafed head for the past 6 weeks after winning the cap in the Maxitours event at Stockport. Playing partner Dave Westwood spotted the cardboard this morning as Mick prepared to play. ‘It’s been agony’ added the lovable Lancastrian.
In today’s event the golf course was playing short but the fast sloping greens got the better of many players as scoring was average.
Thirty years ago today Europe won the Ryder Cup for the first time after a 20 year losing streak. It has nearly been that long since Niall Lynch(10) last won a prize. He teamed up with Brian Hopkins(5) and after a good start some nerves around the turn where they dropped a couple of shots cost the Doctor a chance of a top five finish. He was happy to take 6th place.
As Manchester United return to the Champions league this week after a 12 month absence. Ex players Stuart Pearson and Frank Stapleton also returned to Maxitours after a Summer break. Let’s hope United return in style like Pearson(6) who teamed up with likeable Dave Wilson(8) to take 4th place with 42 points.
Burnley Golf Club’s Kim Stevens(6) and Bruno Beneduci(7) took 5th place with a superb 42 points. Bruno ran the successful ‘ Dolphin Sandwich ‘shop in nearby Burnley for many years. I prefer ham personally.
Steve Aspinall (9)from Birchwood and Barry Wellings(6) played solid golf to finish in 3rd place also on 42 points. Aiden Hoosen(1) and Phil Myers(5) took 2nd place after an excellent 23 points on the back nine saw them win a card play off to take 2nd.
Accrington’s Trevor Foster(scr) played in the Open at Lytham in 1988 and his talented daughter made it a unique family double when she played in the Ladies British Open three years ago. Today he once again found his putting boots and rolled back the years with 5 birdies on the front nine, he then added another on the back nine. Awe struck partner Chris Beaghan(11) managed to contribute twice. Trevor’s great golf saw a 4 shot winning margin as he mastered the tricky greens. Great golf chaps, well played.
Thanks to all players for your support, there has not been a single no show all summer -terrific.
Many thanks to Ian King from EGS oil for his sponsorship. He provides home heating Oil at great prices and they are a very freindly and reliable company. Maxitours players receive £25 off their first orders. 01625 873163.
