Maxitours at superb Stockport
Stockport Golf Club is a wonderful Cheshire course and it has a terrific history. In 1929 the USA Ryder Cup team were passing through the area and wanted to play on the best local course- Stockport was chosen. Twelve local amateurs took them on in a friendly match before the actual Ryder Cup in Moortown and one Stockport member had the terrific achievement of defeating the legendary Gene Sarazen!
Many thanks to all the management and staff for looking after us all so royally today. A great day was had by all and the freshly ironed greens were a real pleasure to putt on.
Ian Johnson struggled on the fast greens but he soon cheered himself up by going round and round the famous Stockport revolving clubhouse door when he thought nobody was looking.
On the 6th hole Alan Clough was happily bending down searching for his ball in the Stockport rough. Unfortunately playing partner Terry Davison decided to hit his first shank of the year and the ball caught Clough flush on his rear. ‘That was lucky -I think it only just lipped out’. said the Styal man as he hobbled away in pain.
In today’s event proud new dad Iain Barthlomew(4) looked a little tired this morning after another sleep interrupted night. This didn’t prevent him from playing the first seven holes in two under par. He nearly spat his own dummy out on the 8th after a bad bounce before more solid play on the back nine saw the likeable Cheshire developer finish in 4th place alongside Ian Noakes(13).
Ian Fairbrother(5) and Gary Hornby(13) got their game on the ‘right tracks’ and they played ‘model ‘ golf to score 43 points and take 3rd place.
John Aikenhead(12) changes partners more often than Leeds United change their manager and today Gordon Hamlett(11) was appointed as his team mate. Gordon and John from Ashton on Mersey had a tremendous back nine and their round came to a stunning finish when Hamlett holed his approach for a remarkable eagle to take the clubhouse lead with 43 points. Unfortunately they looked like a couple of Scottiish rugby players when Macclesfield Golf Club’s Brendan Leighton(16) and Tytherington’s Dave McGuiness(12) beat them late in the day.
Softly spoken Leighton was inspired on the back nine and after playing the first five holes in level par he made a lovely birdie at the last to secure his first ever win with 44 points. Well played chaps, great performance!
Mark Taylor from Shrigley Hall won nearest the pin on 16th with the very last shot of the day.
Thanks to everyone who supported this event, I hope you had a great day on the links.
Yours in golf, Tim
