Maxitours at amazingly good Ringway
Ringway was in tremendous condition for today’s Maxitours event. The greens were firm and true and they played like a top winter seaside links course. Many thanks to Richard and his Greens staff for their exceptional work. They must now be rated as perhaps the best greens in Manchester.
The catering and bar staff were also first class and Fiona the glamorous and alluring Secretary was also great to deal with.
‘It’s very unusual for me but I just can’t criticise my partner Roy Ainsworth this week’ said Brian Ankers in the bar after his round. ‘Why did he play well for a change? I enquired. ‘Oh no, he was so bad I am absolutely speechless’ replied straight faced Brian.
As Manchester United close in on another premiership title after an easy win last night it was always going to be harder to pick a winner in today’s Maxitours event.
There were a few twists and turns in the title race last night and Simon Hemsley’s(8) swing also has more than its fair share of twists and turns. He is enjoying the extra yardage gained with his new M1 driver and this helped his team into 4th place with 87 points playing alongside Al Demmy(9), Darren Whittaker(13) and Mike Spencer(12).
Nearby Coronation street had a sad loss when writer Tony Warren passed away yesterday. Ken Barlow look-alike Steve Latchford(7) and Mike Baldwin look-alike Phil Vokes(3) from Didsbury took third place with 87 points. Paul Sherlock(5) and Barney Ross(4) made up the rest of the talented Didsbury team. Apparently Barney has a look of Eddie Yates who was in the show many years ago but I honestly can’t remember him. I am told he was a scruffy bin man who likes chip butties so I can certainly see the connection.
Second place was taken by the Lymm team of Martin France(4), Peter Atherton(11), Ed Wilkinson(5) and Roger Percival(5) . Ed was the player who did most of the damage and the smooth swinging nice guy enjoyed birdies on the 10th and 13th holes.
Winning today were the two premiership referees Mike Dean(6) and Niel Swarbrick(18) who had had a busy few days refereeing the midweek Bournemouth v Southampton and Stoke v Newcastle games. Today they surprised themselves when they made all the right decisions to secure their first ever Maxitours win. Pete Tomlinson(3) and Mike Masser (13) completed the Aldersley Green quartet. Well played chaps.
