Maxitours at high quality Hopwood
A stunningly beautiful summers day greeted the Maxitours competitors at sunny Middleton today.
As you drive into the lovely Golf Club there is a huge sign announcing that Hopwood is Manchester’s premier Golfing venue and absolutely no one was arguing against that claim after they played this classic parkland masterpiece.
‘That was awesome’ said Silkstone’s Rob Platt ‘what a course! ‘
‘Wow, what an excellent track’ said Ashton on Mersey star Ian Thompson.
The food was terrific and the O’Connor family who run both the Pro shop and the Secretary’s office were terrific to deal with. The only criticism of the day came from salad dodger Dave Antrobus. He was shocked to see some lettuce and a tomato on his plate next to his bacon butty. ‘What a waste of time, I’d prefer another rasher any day’ he complained.
As all my Maxitours players were out on the course by 2.30pm I enjoyed a quiet half hour watching a talented Japanese golfer by the name of Khoki Idoki lead the British Seniors Open at Carnoustie. As the first cards came back in it looked like Richard Palmer and John Farnsworth had been doing the Oki Koki rather than playing golf as they could only manage a paltry 28 points to finish in last place.
I am no fashion expert but I do know dark colours can make you look slimmer. Smartly dressed Roger Percival was picking up a shirt for his portly pal Pete Atherton after they had a high finish two weeks ago. ‘What colour does he want?’ I asked Roger ‘ I’m not sure- but the darker the better’ came the response.
‘The buggy was great thank you’ said polite Trevor Foster to respected Hopwood pro Brian Connor after his round. ‘Any chance I can hire a partner next time I play here? My mate Frank Wade was hopeless.’
In today’s event conditions were absolutely perfect for golf. The recent dry weather meant that the ball was running well and the superb greens led to the best scoring of the season.
Congratulations to my 75 year old father-in-law Rob Weston and his friend Trevor Webb. They had the second best front nine of the day with an excellent 24 points. In order to maintain a happy, functional family life we won’t mention their back nine.
Brookdale’s Gareth Winston((10) and Matt Sayers(2) finished 4th with a 44 point haul and Stuart Coupe(11) and Mark Robinson(10) from Shaw Hill were delighted with a season best 45 points to take 3rd spot
Clitheroes Mark Jones(14) and Paul Nightingale(7) were singing with joy after 46 points earned them second place.
Respected Sale Captain Dave Moore(15) was Head of HR at the BBC in Manchester. He recruited well today as he teamed up with ex newspaper photographer Dale Wallace(11) to record 47 points. Dale was focussing on his golf today but it was Dave Moore who did the most damage. They won a pair of Fj shoes each. ‘Just give Dale a single shoe- it’s all he deserves’ said Moore giving me a friendly wink.
Well played chaps great score.
Thanks to everyone for playing today.
Yours in Golf, Tim
