Maxitours at lovely Wilmslow

Wilmslow was the latest superb venue for the Maxitours Winter Schedule and the Head Green keeper did extremely well to keep this well draining course open after yet more heavy (unforecast) overnight rain. Thanks to everyone for your patience.

All the staff at Wilmslow are first class and their hospitality was up to its usual high standard today- thanks to everyone at this great Club.

There were a couple of new excuses for poor golf from my players today. Paul Lord is usually a great golfer but his average performance was blamed on a ‘Big night out in Rochdale’. His local football team held Spurs yesterday in the FA Cup to earn a replay trip to Wembley and the town went wild.
One (anonymous) regular had a poor round and when I asked him what was the matter with his golf all he could blame it on was: ‘Mother in law trouble.’

Tony Evans has a lovely wife Audrey who lets him play golf whenever and wherever he wants. Today he invited Audrey to came along as she wanted to see what she was missing each week. ‘There you go I told you we don’t enjoy ourselves’ he told her in the Clubhouse after his round.

Brian Greenbank’s team all missed the green on the 14th hole and they looked like dropping some shots. ‘I’d better knock this in then’ predicted Brian and promptly had a hole in one. Brian had to rush off but has asked me to let any Hale members know that the drinks at the Club are on him this week.
A mixture of temporary and full greens meant a shortened course so scoring was always going to be excellent.
Knutsford’s Jim Clarke(11) has been watching the Winter Olympics and he hit a ‘Curling’ putt in for a great birdie on the tough 12th hole. His partner Pete Booth’s(15) golf game has been going ‘downhill’ for years but even he played well today Mark Hagarty(14) and Mike Walker(5) have also been ‘skating on thin ice’ recently but they were delighted to ‘slide’ into the prizes.
Simon Hemsley(9) Dave Eastforth(8) Stuart Wilson (9) and Gareth Bradley (+1) were narrowly pipped into 3rd place on a card play off. They were delighted to earn some valuable Stuburt Order of Merit points.
Accrington’s Dale Beaghan(11), Matt Mortimer (13)Phil Mayers(11) and Anthony Wilson(11) travelled from ‘up North’ as they love Wilmslow and they were more than happy with 88 points and second place.
Taking first place was the likeable Birchwood quartet of Steve Aspinall(9), Alan Drew(6), Alan Simpson(13) and washing machine repair man Colin Berry(12). Colin has a delicate swing and was in a bit of a spin before he went out to play, he was delighted to be in the mix and he drained his fair share of putts today.
Thanks to all who played. It will soon be Spring-honest! Tim
