Maxitours at marvellous Mottram Hall

The wonderful Christmas weather continued and the mild conditions were enjoyed by over a hundred players at Mottram Hall today.

The front nine holes in particular are always very dry in the Winter but it was the quality of the greens which impressed our players:
‘That was superb for January -the greens were excellent!’ Reported Bramall stalwart Simon Hemsley.

I worked at Mottram Hall for fifteen years and have many happy memories of my time at the hotel complex. The England team stayed here in the 1990’s and Gazza and his mate ‘five bellies’ kept sneaking into the pro shop and paying me cash for his Mars bars as he didn’t want Bobby Robson seeing them appear on his room bill.

The website states that Mottram Hall welcome golfers of all abilities and they certainly got that today with two high quality plus 2 handicap players, Gareth Bradley and Chris Chilton and two talented scratch players Sam Wilson and Luke Bartram. We also had the likes of Jonny Barton and John Farnsworth playing- two nice guys who are very much at the other end of the golfing spectrum.

In todays event with breezy conditions and tees well back scoring was tough.
Darren Whittaker(14) is nicknamed Northern Rail because of his unacceptable performances over the past three years . Today the lovely Poynton man was back on form helping Brian Hopkins(6) team into 3rd place with 81 points. Steve Marsh(8) and Nigel Emmett(20) completed the team.

Wilmslow’s Paul Dalby(5), Barney Ross(4), Paul Sherlock(4) and Scott Mason(9) took 2nd place with 82 points. New Dad Scott enjoyed his day of freedom narrowly missing his birdie on the tough 13th hole. He wanted to stay for a couple of pints to celebrate but had to head back home early to change a nappy.

Sandiway’s Gary Neiles(7) took top spot alongside Alan Forber(16) John Morton(13) and Jimmy Norris(22) They played the front nine poorly but caught fire on the back nine to earn their first victory for six months. John Morton birdied his final hole -the tricky 17th to secure a great win. Excellent golf and a great start to the new year.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance,

I hope you have a terrific year on the golf course,
Tim
