Maxitours at Superb Stockport
Another stunning Autumn day greeted Maxitours competitors at Stockport. The course looked a picture with lush fast running fairways lined by golden trees.
The course is improving year upon year and is now right up there with the very best Cheshire has to offer. Thanks to head green keeper Rob Kleishman he has turned Stockport into the must play course in the North West- it is tremendous. His men skilfully cut and ironed the greens for us as the sun was rising very early this morning.
‘That was Joanna Lumley out there!’ Announced Ian Goulty trying to be funny – ‘Absolutely fabulous.’
The friendly Stockport caterers are legendary and Paul and Tina create a lovely atmosphere -they really are special people. The food is so good my Dad travels from Macclesfield to have lunch with me. He always has the fish and chips and each year the fish gets bigger and bigger. Luckily so does my Dad. Thanks for all your work guys.
I have always loved the tree lined Stockport course and in the late 90’s we had 18 hole Open qualifying here. I was on fire and a young Charles Schwartzel had to play his best to narrowly beat me by ten shots.
The new handicap system is just around the corner and I am starting to sweat over the added work involved. I am also yet to meet anyone who thinks their handicap won’t go up! There could be a few disappointed people. It should all be very interesting in November.
In todays’ event with 9/10 handicaps the scoring was excellent.
Prestbury millionaires Chris Adams(11) and Phil Singh(13) took 5th with 44 points.
The Veitch brothers, Andy (20) and Peter (12) from Hale took 4th with 45 points despite not scoring any points on the 8th hole.
Hazel Groves Joe Shelley(10) and Adrian Waring(16) made the short journey down the A6 to play Stockport and despite scoring an excellent 24 points on their back nine they were 3rd after losing a card play off to Shrigley Hall’s heart surgeon Niall Lynch(8) and heart breaker Neil Worthington(16). They were having an average day before an amazing finish with Lynch birdying the 15th 16 and 17th before Worthington surprisingly stepped up to birdie the last! Terrific.
Winning today was Leigh golf Clubs Jimmy Ainscough(22) and Gary Matthews(9). Matthews did most of the work as they recorded a first win of the season. Well played chaps.
Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance again.
Incredible.
