Maxitours at amazing Hopwood
Hopwood was presented in truly immaculate condition for todays event. This Harry Colt designed golf course just keeps getting better.
As I put the nearest the pin markers out first thing this morning there were deer munching on the lush rough, green woodpeckers floating across the fairways and a pair of pied wagtails bobbing up and down next to the 16th green. This place is a little oasis and only 5 miles from the centre of Manchester. Brilliant.
House manager Steve was really excellent to deal with and my players enjoyed his bacon butties and hospitality.
The food was tremendous but the portions were ridiculous. I could have fed my family for a week with my special black bean chicken lunch. Jeremy Capper ordered the fishfinger butty. When it arrived there were eight fish fingers in it. Eight! It could take a few years for North sea fish stocks to recover.
Everyone had an excellent day. Except for George Kerr.
He went home devastated.
First his team were pipped by a shot by rival fellow Heyrose member Norrie Erwan. Secondly, and much more upsetting for the Scotsman was when he lost his 2nd castle tee of the day after a frantic search on the 13th. ‘I’ve never lost two tees in one round before.’ Reported the shell-shocked Jock.
The 13th is one of the best par threes you will ever play. Garry Smith came into the clubhouse delighted with his shot that finished three feet away, ‘That will take some beating’ He observed.
Two groups later likeable Andrew Cox hit it to within 2 feet ‘ That will take some beating.’ The Lymm man told me.
Twenty minutes later Lee Tilley walked in –‘ I think I’ve got nearest the pin.’ Lee’s ball hit the flag and his ball came to rest less than a foot away from the pin. ‘I don’t think that will be beaten.’
It wasn’t.
Bromborough’s posh scousers Phil Gow, Mike Green, Mark Sanderson and Glyn Rankin travelled down the M62 and took third place with a solid 86 points.
Birchwood’s Simon Wilkinson, John Linsky, Dave Monk and Barry Wilson travelled less far down the M62 and were delighted with their 87 points to secure 2nd place.
Taking first place after more than a year without a win were the ever present team of Richard Blackwell(12), Ex-European table tennis champion John Hilton(14), Garry Smith(9) and Dave Greenwood(10). They narrowly won helped by picking up six points on the tricky 18th hole when other teams were faltering. Well played chaps, a great win on a great golf course.
Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance today.
Yours in golf, Tim
