The Clarion Wealth Management Welsh Classic

Conwy was terrific today. The fairways were a lovely scorched yellow as this beautiful links course really played as it was designed to play. Thanks to Matt Parsley and his Championship team for looking after us so well throughout the day.

We dodged a bullet as we only had two small 15 minute showers which barely dampened the grass rather than all day rain as some negative weather apps were suggesting..

It is great to see Pete Newey playing. He normally gives me plenty of ammunition for my reports. He has been mentioned previously when he told me that the highlight of his round was being stung by a wasp. In another Maxitours event he caused mayhem when he drove to the first tee and teed off in someone else’s buggy. He was delighted to have an event free round today. It’s a two round tournament so plenty of time for him to make a big contribution to the report tomorrow. Watch this space.

As I get older I think I may be losing it a bit but John Coleman has definitely lost it. After he handed his card in this evening this was our conversation:

‘Oh, yeah that’s right.’

In the first round of the Welsh Classic Andy Oakes will struggle to sleep tonight. The Prestbury team were flying through 16 holes but struggled on the 17th and it was just likeable Oakes and Mark Pretty left in the hole. Oakes couldn’t get out of the bunker and failed to score. His team are thinking of going out without him this evening. Despite this they are looking good in 3rd place with 84 points.

Two Bramhall teams occupy first and second place.

Matt Ford, Andy Bradshaw, Al Demmy and Neil Smith are in 2nd place with 86 points. Eight handicapper Ford was on fire scoring a career best 2 over par round.

Leading is Tony O’Gara, Steve Profitt, John Owen and Simon Lewis. A great team effort saw all players contributing at least four nett birdies. Can they handle the pressure? Monday is a very big night out in Llandudno, the blue rinse brigade are usually out in force. Go easy boys.

It should be a great day at North Wales tomorrow.

Thanks for your 100% attendance despite the poor forecast. We were all rewarded with a terrific first day.
