Maxitours at fantastic Fleetwood

Wow! What a great day!

It was terrific to have such a high quality links course on the Maxitours rota. All the golfers loved it out there.

It is just slightly over an hour drive for most players and we were rewarded with a special days’ golf.

The temperature was a pleasant twenty degrees and until the last hour or so of the day the rain held off.

As the seaside breeze buffeted the clubhouse I asked Neil Evans if he was a good wind player:

‘I’m ok when its downwind but not so good into it.’ Thanks for that Neil.

I was friendly with the late and very knowledgeable tour pro Denis Durnian who holds the record for the lowest 9 hole score in the open with his outward 28 at Royal Birkdale in the early 80’s. He always said a links course plays easier with a bit of a wind. Today there was a lot of wind and it certainly didn’t make Fleetwood any easier to play.

Teams out earlier in the day had the better of the weather.

Taking third spot was the low handicap Clitheroe team of Simon Raine, Denis Greenup and Philip Cort with 79 points.

Second with an excellent 82 points were the on-form Martin Williams, Martin Bray, old retired Pete Moores and Mal Pritchard.

At long last after 2 years of missing out on scorecard holders and bag towels the lovable big bear Martin Wainman (11) won a prize and it was first place today. He was joined by Alex Smith(6) Jordan Witt (6) and Nigel Edwards(8). Despite a slight 2 point choke on the very last hole the quartet played beautifully and are very popular winners.
