Maxitours at dangerously good Dunham Forest
The Dunham Forest Golf and Country Club was in outstanding condition for today’s Maxitours event. The greens were possibly the best surfaces we have played on all year and it is nearly November!! Great work from David Lippiate and his extremely highly-rated green keeping team.
The food served by Leslie Saxon and her staff was as excellent as always. Even salad dodger Dave Antrobus was nearly full after his round as he enjoyed the Dunham fish and chips.
‘The cod was the size of a baby shark!’ Reported the delighted marketing man.
‘I’m so full I won’t have anything to eat now until my three course evening meal tonight’.
It was great to have our Yorkshire friends playing today. Barnsley’s Steve Morfitt and his mates come over the hills about four times a year so I have to switch on the translation app on my iphone.
Did you have a good journey this morning?
‘Aye it were Tickety Boo’ ( translates to ‘yes.’)
‘Bye eck it’s a bit thin owt thur’ – (‘It is cool this morning’)
‘Me andicap is risin lak a bakin’ cake’- ( ‘I am playing badly this year.’)
‘Does tha tek change?’ – (I’ve raided my daughters piggy bank to pay for todays golf.)
I think Koos Alders from The Netherlands also needs a translation app. I asked him if he had played well?’
‘The trees were stunning.’ He replied.
Extremely likeable Heyrose member Lewis Marland thinned his five iron into the 8th hole and it scuttled up to within an inch of the flag to win nearest the pin. ‘There are no pictures on a scorecard- everyone will think that I hit a great shot!’ Chuckled Lewis to his playing partners.
No, they won’t Lewis.
In today’s event the perfect golfing conditions and fantastic putting surfaces meant scoring was always going to be excellent. Even Knutsford’s Trevor Nicholson and Steve Gibbons managed to collect 36 points.
Six teams shared 44 points and five of them scored 22 points on the front and back nine! Padeswood and Buckley’s Jake Hackett(7) and John Newton(15) took 4th spot however with a best of the day 25 points on their closing nine!
Cheshire seniors Captain Gareth Bradley playing off PLUS THREE(!) and Simon Hemsley(10), both from Bramall scored a superb 46 points. They went out in five under par 31 gross. Quality golf and good enough for 3rd place today.
Two teams scored 47 points. Despite being a Liverpool fan who lives in Manchester Bob Pickthall(14)is a great bloke. He teamed up with Steve Lamont (7). Both guys contributed 9 times but Lamont played the four tough closing in an impressive one under par to keep the score ticking along.
Winning with a very slightly better back nine was Sandiway’s John Hunt(18) and Conwy’s Dr James Shipston(10). These guys play every time I have an event on a Thursday as Shipston is saving lives the other six days a week. He made a few great saves on the course today but it was Hunts thinned wedge into the last to set up a winning birdie that sealed the victory. Well played chaps great golf.
Thanks to everyone for your support today.
Yours in golf, Tim

Maxitours at pristine Prestbury
A great day was enjoyed by all in today’s first Maxitours Charity Open. Prestbury Golf Club was a fitting venue and it just keeps getting better and better. The golf course was in tremendous condition for mid-October. Is Head green keeper Mark Crossley the best in the country? It is very close.
Well-spoken James Brown politely reported: ‘The course was lovely and I’ve had a lovely day. Thank you very much Tim.’
The caterers did a roaring trade throughout the day and the fare looked and tasted superb.
Thanks to everyone for supporting these great charities (MS, Operation Smile, East Cheshire Hospice). We have raised over £2500 today and three cheques for well over £800 each were put in the post by the Prestbury secretary before close of play today! Brilliant.
Regular player and all-around good guy John Hunt quite rightly pointed out: ‘We are so blessed to be able to play golf on a day like this and be able to help people less fortunate than ourselves.’
Unlucky Bob Sutton is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet and is always first to the bar- a real gent. He had a bad day today as he had to come in off the course after five holes with a touch of bronchitis. As he put his Clubs away the boot then slammed on his head and there was a trickle of blood down his nose. Bob recovered with a quiet cigarette on the balcony and his mild bronchitis seemed to improve.
Darren Bridge had a great score last week. I couldn’t read my handwriting so his name came out in the results as Darren Brady. He was upset and asked me to make sure it was spelt correctly. Darren’s team finished last this week.
‘Leave me as Darren Brady please Tim’ He begged.
Colin Roberts won the nearest the pin on the 168 yard 7th hole. He took his driver and flushed it. Thanks to Eddie Ellis from JP and Brimelow estate agents for his sponsorship. One of the good guys.
There was a wide variety of scores in today’s event. 87 points was enough to win for talented Richard Blackwell but Mike Kirchins team could only scrape together 64 points.
Wilmslow’s Phil Vokes(3) Simon Wells(7) Barney Ross(6) and Paul Dalby(6) took the early lead with 85 points which looked as though it would be good enough to win.
That score was matched by Steve Heywood’s(6) team . Steve was playing with wife Janet(10) , Richard Wakefield(15) and respected Mellor Captain Graham Davenport(9). If Wakefield is playing an average round they call him Richard. If he plays his usual rubbish he is referred to as ‘Dick.’ Today he was ‘Ricardo’ and played the tough 12th , 13th and 14th holes in one under.
Late in the day Pete Newey finished his round and reported ‘Those guys behind were peppering the pin!’ Sure enough Richard Blackwell(12) had a huge smile on his face when he entered the Clubhouse as their team had ten gross birdies between them to score 87 points. Tony Jennison(4), John Hilton(12) and Chris Marshall(13) all ‘Had one of those days’
Well played chaps. Thanks to everyone for your amazing support.
That was a great day.

Maxitours at sunny and dry Llangollen
Prestbury MS, East Cheshire Hospice and Smile Charity event next week – space for 3 teams at this Cheshire Classic – please support these great Charities
Food is available all day- please give the caterers your usual excellent support
Maxitours at Lovely Llangollen
Wow!! what a day at Llangollen today. Whilst Manchester was drowning in the rain Maxitours players were wearing short sleeves and playing golf in warm Welsh sunshine whilst breathing in healthy mountain air.
Many thanks to the head greenkeeper for preparing the course so well despite overnight rain. He was happy for us to play and it seems in my experience the better the greenkeeper the more he keeps his course open. Thank you.
‘Tremendous!!’ Declared Hazel Grove Captain Simon Ashton.
That was Absolutely Bootiful!’ Announced Bernard Matthews lookalike Colin Roberts.
‘I thought you were joking this morning when you said it was on. That was wonderful!’ Reported Macclesfields delighted Simon Poucher.
Eighty bacon butties were prepared with great speed and skill by Gwen the caterer and they were all enjoyed by our players.
Thanks to everyone for changing to the 1pm shotgun from the original timed start. I thought a lot of my players would have big nights out booked on a Friday evening so I may lose a lot of teams but it appears that Maxitours players have no social lives whatsoever. Very sad.
I spoke to some lovely old Welsh boys in the bar but it was hard work trying to explain how a shotgun start works to a couple of farmers. After 10 minutes one of them asked me how many holes each group was going to play so I decided to get back to playing solitaire on my computer.
From the Clubhouse I watched the very first shot of the day into the 18th hole by Andy Buckley which nearly pitched in the hole.
In the second group a member of John Cox’s team once again nearly holed his shot. Even Richard Blackwell pitched one just past the flag and zipped it off the green with a little too much backspin
‘You’ve got some great players here!’ Observed Ashley the assistant pro are they all low handicappers?’
Just then Tony Evans and his team made their way to the closing hole.
‘You might change your mind if you watch this lot!’
Incredibly Paul Evans(21) and Stuart Hibbert(25) left me gobsmacked as they both made classy pars to prove me wrong. I always thought they were rubbish. Brilliant.
Tees were well forward and my players enjoyed getting some run on the incredibly firm fairways the greens were also rolling well so scoring was excellent.
Third place went to Paul Fell(4) Nigel Ashton(12) Colin Bryan(9) and Dave Cooper(17) with 85 points. They lost the card play off despite scoring 45 on their back nine.
Richard Blackwell(13) Andy Hamlett(8) Joh Hilton(13) and Steve Austin(13) took second place with 46 points on the easier back nine. Blackwells eagle on the par 5 15th was a touch of class.
Winning today was Alsagers Dave Marchant(18) and Dave Mason(12) who are lovely guys and play each week with absolutely no success at all. They teamed up today with Dave’s son Geoff(5) and Andy Williamson(14). Williamson looks likes some player as he picked up 8 shots for his team with some excellent golf. Well played chaps. Great score.
