Maxitours at red hot Ringway
The last Maxitours event of the 2017 golfing year took place at Ringway today. The course was in superb condition for December and our players enjoyed the fast greens and excellent tees – many thanks to the green keepers for all their preparation.
I love this Ringway. Christmas is imminent and the nights have just started drawing out. Members and staff at this great Manchester Club are always very hospitable and the Clubhouse is one of the best in the North West- it really is a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon.
I could also watch a few fourballs playing down the first hole from the dining room window.
Big hitting Steve Latchford was in the copse to the left of the first hole. Most weeks the wayward driver can be seen searching in the woods for his golf balls. His wife put their Christmas tree up earlier in the month and Steve was delighted to find a couple of his old pro v1s nestled in the branches.
Paul Sherlock says he always invites Andy Lawman to play here as he is a Ringway specialist. ‘There is no play allowed from the fairways at Ringway in the winter -it’s perfect for Andy as he never hits the fairway anyway’ said Sherls.
Nigel Oakes and his team started their round on the 2nd tee in today’s shotgun start. As they came up the 18th fairway team mate Andy Thompson was ordered to do something useful and get the drinks in. ‘That’s my first contribution of the day’ muttered likeable Thompson as he handed the barmaid a £20 note whilst his team happily putted out 300 yards away on the first green.
In today’s event there were eagles on the 10th hole for Gareth Bradley and Pete Tomlinson. Brian Hopkins recorded and eagle on the par four 11th hole- well done chaps.
Sandiway’s Gary Neiles(5) led his team into 3rd place with 87 points. Joe Yates(14), Roy Ainsworth(26) and well known Malcolm Thorniley(7) completed the friendly quartet.
Second place went to the Davenport team of Ex Copper Phil Housley(5), Dave Slater(10), Chris Housley(15) and Charles Waldron-Heath(10). Chris is a lovely lad who works full time as a carer- good man. His father Phil now owns the biggest kennel and cattery in the North West. ‘We look after 200 cats and 100 dogs. There is also a woman who brings her rabbit in for some hydrotherapy treatment. She pays us £25 a week and the rabbit can’t even swim’ chuckled the top businessman.
The premiership referees once again came out on top in today’s event. Mike Dean(5), Neil Swarbrick (17)Mike Masser(13) and Pete Tomlinson(1) picked up 47 points on the tougher back nine to win the card play off despite being docked a shot last week. Before they went out to play they all gave each other Christmas cards. Neil Swarbrick produced his from his top pocket and Mike Dean was taking great pleasure in just handing his out willy-nilly to anyone in the clubhouse who moved.
Well played chaps- great win.
Thanks to everyone for your support this year. My family and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New year.
Suzy Tim Ella and James.

IMPORTANT Vale Royal news and The latest Stuburt Order of Merit
Maxitours at Vale Royal cancelled – event moved to snow free North Wales Golf Club
Dear Maxitours player
Due to freezing temperatures once again tomorrow and lots of ground snow Vale Royal will be unfit for play on Wednesday. Unfortunately the event at this great course has been cancelled.
I have phoned various courses to try and get game for my players and the best I can do is North Wales which is in ‘really excellent condition’ according to Club pro Richard Bradbury and they can accommodate us between 10.24am- 12pm
This is a lovely links course and well worth a visit.
Cost is just £20 which includes prizes- the field is limited to just twelve 4 balls and will be on a first come first served basis- please let me know if you wish to play!!
Thank you for your patience, Tim

Maxitours at Superb Stockport
The weather was incredibly kind for the Maxitours event at Stockport. Torrential overnight rain and snow forecast later in the day left a narrow window of great weather which players took full advantage of this afternoon.
‘Considering the amount of rain we have had recently that was absolutely terrific!’ Said an impressed Joe Yates after his round.
‘This place just gets better and better.’ Declared Mike Stanforth.
The course was designed by Sandy Herd the 1902 Open Champion and he would be delighted to see the course looking so good in December -all players were extremely complimentary about the smooth greens as they handed their cards in after play. Thanks to all the greens staff for their excellent preparation.
It was also a classy gesture from the likeable Stockport Golf Club Captain Les Jowsey who made a special trip to come down to wish us all an enjoyable day. Thank you very much- I hope you have a great year Captain.
The Clubhouse overlooks the17th tee and I am always fascinated by the variety of golf swings on offer. If Claude Harmon was watching I think he might consider taking up a new profession. Richard Blackwell must practice his backswing under a coffee table at night and I am not suggesting Munro Donald’s swing is too steep but when he goes to the local fairground he never struggles to make the bell ring when he swings the big mallett.
Steve Foxcroft is not known for winning things. He has only been mentioned in a Maxitours report once and that was when he lost control of his trolley on the 9th hole at Llangollen and it ended up disappearing into the fast flowing river. Today he played with his son Jamie and they both win some balls after recording twos. Well done Steve. They still managed to finish 4th from last however.
In today’s event late stand in Eddie Jordan(14) found the right formula when he teamed up with Wychwoods’ Richard Williamson(13), Dave Goodwin(11) and Phil Robinson(10) to take 4th place with 84 points. They were beaten on a card play off by the Colin Roberts Alsager team of Geoff Andrews(20), Dave Masson(14) and top cricket umpire Dave Marchant(16) who had a strong finish to take 3rd.
Terry FRIDAY(20) played in his first Maxitours event today and he was the ‘MAN’ . The badly dressed golfer looks like he has just been involved in a shipwreck but it didn’t stop him from playing some great golf. He was at home in the sand and played a couple of great bunker shots. Joe Yates (15) Roy Ainsworth(27) and Gary Neiles(6) from Sandiway helped the team to 85 points and a best of the season 2nd place.
Winning today were world famous Premiership referees Mike Dean(6) and Neil Swarbrick(18) along with Pete Tomlinson(2) and Mike Masser(14). These guys might miss a few things on the football pitch but they didn’t miss anything on the terrific Stockport greens. Their excellent performance was only slightly marred on two occasions. Once when linesman Swarbrick couldn’t help himself from running up and down the fairway when Dean handed him the flagstick and secondly late in his round Dean hit a great putt which just lipped out. They both quickly checked their watches to see if the ball had gone in or not.
Well played chaps , you know we love you really.
Thanks to all for playing I hope you enjoyed your round before the snow sets in!
Yours in golf, Tim
