Maxitours at cracking Crosland Heath

Glorious sunshine and a very warm Yorkshire welcome greeted Maxitours competitors at Crosland Heath today. The course is built on sandstone and drains like a sieve. The fairways and greens were firm and fast. Excellent.
Crosland is one of the highest courses in the country and the views across West Yorkshire are outstanding.

Alister Mackenzie was learning his trade when he designed Crosland in 1914 and subsequently went on to design Augusta, Royal Melbourne and Cypress Point among others. The five par threes are high quality using the old quarry to give them real character. The swirling wind on these holes surely played a part when he designed the classic 12th at Augusta.
Crosland is a real Yorkshire Club. A very old member came in and ordered a ‘am sandwich and a couple o’ chips. Only want a few chips, t’lass give me a damn big bloody bowl yesterday.’
‘Its £3.50 please.’
‘Gi’ower ave prices gone up?’ Brilliant.

Nigel Ashton has a lovely Porsche car. I mentioned before how the evening before an event he google earths every course we play to find a remote parking spot so his car doesn’t get damaged. He parked on the far side of the car park today miles away from anyone. He sat down looking relaxed before the steward told him that he was in perfect position for a wayward tee shot off the last. I’ve never seen him move as quickly.

In today event scoring was incredibly close with Mick Mahons team winning the card play off to take 3rd spot.

Knutsford golf clubs Treasurer and past Captain John Phibbs, past Captain Graham Pike, Nigel Davenport and Rik Sym took 2nd place with an excellent 82 points. They were outstanding as they recorded their best ever finishes after many years supporting me. Brilliant.

Winning today was the high quality Ex British senior champion Alan Squires team, two Manchester golfing legends Steve Hamer and Tony Cuppello and the unknown Nick Kerin.

They were delighted to win by a single shot. Four handicapper Hamer played in the Open in the early 80’s and has represented England but this was the definitely highlight of his career, Tony Cuppello once shot 65 to win the Manchester Alliance Championships, He will talk you through it if you askhim. Well played chaps.

Thanks to everyone for supporting the change of venue – everyone loves this place!

Spring is here on Saturday. Woo hoo.

Maxitours at superb Vale Royal

MAXITOURS AT “SUPERB” VALE ROYAL 19th FEBRUARY

The day began with some mixed weather for the early starters but began clearing up for the later players with the sun trying to break through at times. Although rather cold a warm welcome was extended by the Vale Royal Abbey clubhouse catering staff keeping the Maxitour players fed and watered throughout the day.

This Club just keeps getting better and is a huge favourite with Maxitours players. Owner Steve Graham can be very proud of his magnificent Club as Maxitours players had a real treat today.

Thanks to my good friend PGA Professional Matt Turnock for running the day with his usual high levels of efficiency.
Big shout out to Joyce Larkin playing in Martin Humphries team who at the age of 81 contributed nicely when needed to help her team finish in the prizes today. An inspiration to us all !!!

As the afternoon warmed up so did the scoring as the majority of the better scores were from teams in the middle to the end of the day with Gary Nieles team playing an “absolute blinder” of a game saying “everything went right for us, I’ve never in all the years of playing Maxitours been in a team that’s scored in the 90’s before. We all gelled together perfectly”.

On another day of firsts BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Phil Gow on his HOLE IN ONE on the par 3 6th – the first of many hopefully Phil – fantastic stuff and well played helping your team secure 3rd place.

Thanks again for your continued support, Tim.

Today’s results were:

Maxitours at super Stockport

Stockport was bone dry for todays Maxitours event.
The wonderful greens were cut and ironed this morning ready for todays event. Excellent work.

The club improves all the time and is currently being refurbished. The bar will be raised even higher when the work is completed this April.

Dan in the pro shop is a star and can’t do enough for me. He takes out the nearest the pin markers with a smile on his face. Top man.

The cool Easterly breeze ensured a few rosy faces in the Clubhouse after play. Paul Price had a very red face after setting a new Maxitours record when he achieved ‘the shortest putt ever missed to win some balls in the sweep’. His 5 inch effort actually missed the hole completely. He was very quiet in the clubhouse after his round.

Martin Mellor is crazy about golf. He played 18 holes today. I asked him if he was playing on Wednesday:
‘No. I’ve had major shoulder surgery. I’ve played this weekend and I’m playing tomorrow but I’m seeing my shoulder consultant on Wednesday so I can’t play. He is hopefully giving me permission to start playing again.’

Veteran nice guy Tim Spencer is incredibly positive his team finished second last today.
‘Success was just getting around and being alive.’ Very true. It looked like he had actually died on the front nine when he didn’t feature on the card but was resuscitated with a couple of pars on the back nine.

Prestbury had three teams playing at Stockport. New President Simon Moorhead and new Captain Martin Prescott both played in separate teams but they were overshadowed by less important Steve Saunders and his team who has spent most of his Maxitours career at the bottom of the results table but a solid 83 points saw them achieve their best ever Maxitours finish- in 8th place.

In todays event everyone’s favourite Martin Humphries led his team of Tony Hereford, Jim Heywood and Barry Caldwell into 3rd place.

Second place went to Ashton In Makerfields Paul Woods, Andrew Dean, Kevin Sharratt and Phillip Molyneux.

But winning with 89 points was Davenports Richard Blackwell, John Hilton, Steve Austin and Tony Jennison. The likeable quartet played some great golf today and were delighted with their victory. Jennison (5) was the star player with four birdies and an eagle on the 12th hole. Well played chaps.

Thanks to everyone for your 100% attendance. Incredible,
