The Shotsaver Masters at Hazel Grove

The classy Alastair Mackenzie designed Hazel Grove was the gloriously sunny setting for todays Maxitours event. It was even hotter than last week in Florida where I enjoyed big pecan pancakes each morning, big steaks and big ice cream in the evening, and big scores on the golf course in the afternoon.

Maxitour legend Neville Dennis celebated his 75th birthday today with a bacon sandwich served by an attractive waitress – ‘I’m 75 today, is this bacon sandwich free?’ he asked hopefully. She didn’t even bother to reply.
Then he picked up his scorecard ‘Do I have to pay for the golf today- its my birthday’ he asked, before heading £20 lighter to the first tee via the pro shop in search of a free mars bar.

Nevilles birthday really started with an excellent 200 yard tee shot which split the fast running 1st fairway.

Ageing Moby Rawthore has developed a bald patch this winter and he looked worried on the first tee when he suddenly realised a cap was required to prevent sunstroke on the top of his newly exposed head. Moby has a selection of very cheap redundant visors for sale if anybody would like one.

Pete Moores is not allowed to play any golf mid week. Each evening his detective wife checks his face for any signs of radiation and his shirt collars for any sign of suncream residue. Today, for the first time, he tried out his new factor 50, no smell, clear, non greasy, Boots own suncream ‘its fantastic stuff, she’ll have absolutely no idea what I’ve been up to today!’ said a delighted and still slightly pasty faced Moores.

In todays event Tony Lowe teamed up with home player Ben Shelley and they were overjoyed with their 43 point haul which earned them a second place finish. Two handicapper Pete O’Neill teamed up with the very consistent John Reilly and their 43 points finished 3rd.

Very tanned Ex European table tennis champion John Hilton obviously enjoys playing with his very small white balls and he teamed up with Andy Hamlett, they were very happy to finish 4th on 42 points.

Carl Kennedy has really struggled lately with his golf game and had not had a top five finish for over 6 months. He has recently turned into an incredibly reliable putter, give him a four foot putt and he is guaranteed to miss. Today the very likeable Northenden member proved that form is temporary and class is permanent as he scored an excellent 45 points with his partner Dom McHue to take todays honours in style. Very well played chaps.

Brian Mottram and his team enjoyed a couple of pints after play in the bar and the bad jokes started to flow. ‘We’re stopping for an Indian on the way home, I’m having chicken Tarka massala, it tastes very like chicken tikka massala, its just a little bit otter.’

Maxitours Footjoy Masters At Vale Royal.

A field of nearly 100 Maxitours competitors enjoyed playing in the Footjoy Masters at the wonderful Vale Royal course today. Many thanks, to my good friend Matt Turnock for running the event so well whilst I am battling through the Florida thunderstorms.
As I am away I have no idea about any sports news, I am not too bothered who won the premiership however does anyone know if Kenny Dalgliesh has made any new signings for Liverpool?

Matt’s report is below:

All went well here at sunny Vale Royal Abbey. Ross Birch made the comment as he walked into register that Tim was looking younger and more hansome than he had ever seen him, then realised it was me (honestly it must be the smoke getting in his eyes). Much debating was made by groups as to whether or not to enter the 2’s and for quite a few it was a costly mistake in underestimating their abilities with no fewer than ten players making 2 but only five of them had entered the sweep. Most frustrated must have surely been Roger Percival who made an eagle on the 246 yard 3rd Par 4. Steve Parle’s team came back in a magnificent 40 points to make sure they did not prop up the rest of the field after a horrendous 28 point haul on the front 9 “we were determined not to come last” was their parting comment showing the Man City never give up attitude.
The battle for the spoils was hard contested with Moby Rawthore’s team of Guds Ahmed, Ross Birch and Ian Grogan coming out on top with an impressive 88 points followed closely by Gary Garner, Ray Ward, Geoff Cogswell and George Gregson with 85 points with third place going to Charles Herbert, Mark Richardson, Alan Pengelly and Barry Horricks with 84.
All players said the course was in amazing condition and the Vale Royal staff were very helpful throughout the whole day

The nearest pin 10th was won by Jim Ecles (a matter on inches from the hole)
The longest drive 18th was won by Neil Higgins (a monster 300+ yards by all accounts)

Maxitours at delightful Dunham Forest

The exclusive Dunham Forest Golf and Country club was the wonderful setting for todays Maxitours Golf Event.

In its 50 year history Dunham Forest has had only had 4 Club Professionals- The BBC Commentator Alex Hay, Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas, Doug Smith and currently the very highly respected professional Ian Wrigley who has served the club so well for nearly forty years. Many thanks to Ian, the friendly staff and members who made us feel very, very welcome indeed.

During the 2nd world war the Dunham course was used as an Italian prisoner of war camp. As Colin Lynch quietly stumbled through the trees searching for his pinnacle it was suggested that he looked rather like an escaped Italian inmate with his stripy golf pants, nice tan and slick black hair.

Next Monday Dunham Forest is hosting the Manchester United golf day, it may well be advisable to stay well away from the course as there could be a few golf shoes flying around the locker rooms and golf clubs flying around the course if results go as expected on Sunday.

In todays event John Reilly and Jimmy O’Reilly started this season where they left off last year as they set the early pace with 45 points. This was matched by the smartly dressed Pete Moores and the not so smartly dressed Moby Rawthore who were beaten on a card play off. Gary Garner and Ray Ward stood on the eighteenth tee with 45 points but a calamity of errors saw them fail to add to that total and they finished third on the card play off.

Near the end of the field 75 year old regulars Jimmy Eccles and Kenny Jepson were having the round of their lives as they recorded 26 points on the front nine. These two legends normally enjoy playing bad golf with very little success ‘are you enjoying the course chaps?’ I asked as I collected the nearest the pin marker ‘its absolutely bloody marveeluss!’ replied Kenny as his partner rolled in a birdie. Jimmy looked like he was having an outer body experience. Their 45 point haul was their best ever Maxitours performance however they were beaten into 4th place on the card play off ‘call the golf police!’ exclaimed Kenny ‘we’ve been robbed’.

Results from magnificent Pleasington

The magnificent Pleasington Golf Course was presented in tremendous condition for this the first event of the Maxitours Summer season. The fast, smooth and true greens were really enjoyed by all 92 Maxitours players. Many thanks to the excellent greens staff for their professional work.

The Summer Tour officially started today and we new we were in for a great days golf when Colin Lynch revved his way into the Pleasington car park in his black Ferrari California (this car is only used by Colin in the summer months when extreme fine weather is forecast.) After playing some great golf recently Colin was delighted to pick up a pair of black Footjoy socks, but a white Taylor Made visor was not so warmly received ‘haven’t you got a black one to match my Ferrari?’ asked a disappointed Colin.

Big Phil Cogswell was out in the third match today, this talented musician plays keyboard at various venues across the UK in his band called ‘Crash.’ Phil’s claim to fame is once appearing on ‘Top of the Pops’ in the 70’s. Today Phil’s golf was hitting all the wrong notes as he popped and topped his way around the tricky heathland course. Phil also nearly caused a major ‘crash’ as his hooked tee shot clattered off the railway tracks bordering the 5th hole narrowly missing the 9.15 to Burnley .

Dave Stanhope turned up today with a really nasty eye infection and bumped into several chairs as he stumbled into the Pleasington Golf Club lounge barely able to see where he was going. Dave has worked hard and spent thousands of pounds seeking perfection in his golf swing however he appeared very alarmed to find himself playing his best golf today despite the fact he could see neither the hole, nor the ball, nor his club.

Retired policeman John Stubbs is desperate to win some balls and enters in the 2’s sweep each week, unfortunately he very often returns to the Clubhouse upset, shaking and with tears in his eyes after ‘missing a string of birdie putts on the short holes’. Today the likeable 64 year old Sale member decided the simplest and least stressful way to make a two was on a par five and he holed his 3 wood to record that the rareist of birds-an Albatross- on Pleasington’s beautiful 7th hole. Congratulations on your wonderful achievement John!

Sean Reilly and Paul Bradley had a poor start to their round however an excellent back nine saw them record 44 points and a solid third place. Joe Leech and talented Pleasington member Tariq Aziz matched that score but Tariqs magnificent chip to save par on the 18th hole was enough to secure second place.

First place went to Steve Rourke and the on-form Moby Rawthore from Sale GC. It was a real team effort however the highlight of their round was when Rourke chipped in on the tough 13th hole as he became perhaps the scruffiest looking golfer ever to win on Maxitours.
