Maxitours at Classy Crosland Heath

Crosland Heath made us feel very welcome indeed today. A great golf club.

The Secretary Toby is superb and he promised an excellent golf course and the greenkeeper certainly delivered it for us today. There was an overnight frost which made conditions tricky but as the sun came out the course just got better and better.
There was a biting wind on the exposed holes which helped cool the players down so they didn’t overheat. There were only three reported incidents of frost bite.

Crosland was designed by Dr Mackenzie and opened in 1914 and was reported in a local newspaper;
‘The course is a natural one, Dr Mackenzie visited and planned it out, there may be some longer ones and perhaps more difficult ones, but none where the player is kept more on the stretch and none which possesses in a greater degree that indefinable quality called Charm.’

A couple of home-based Yorkshire teams played today. From the nearby coalmining town of Barnsley it was great to welcome Teddy Scargill – famous for his ball Striking. He was the Pits today as his team could only Scrape 63 points.

It was great to see the Hope Brothers playing. They are lovely blokes and always good value. Ben is a handy player off 8, Tony is good on his day off 15 but older brother Trevor Hope (known as ‘absolutely no’ to his golfing pals) plays off 39. ‘No’ came in twice as the team recorded 55 points.

‘We had that many 1 pointers I could’ve marked the card with a ruler’. Admitted Tony.

On the course the firm greens and cool breeze made scoring tough.

Dave More O Farrells’ Tytherington team of Tim Readitt, Malc Kendrick and Julian Brindley were just pipped on a card play off by Archie Higgins, James Connor, Steve Williams and Gary Neiles who scored just 75 points to take 1st place. Neiles has been on fire recently and will suffer a 2 shot handicap reduction for his consistent play. Well played chaps.

Maxitours at excellent Wychwood.

Glorious sunshine which lasted all day greeted the Maxitours players at lovely Wychwood Park Golf Course today.

Huge thanks to my brother Simon for running todays event so well.

He was amused at registration after talking to Paul Evans that his teams aim of the day was not to finish last – he was delighted to finish third from bottom.

Tytherington’s Nick Coleman reported that he had chipped in out of the bunker for a two.
‘Well done – That’s a Golden Ferret’.
‘Never heard of it’.

Impressing today was Steve Aspinall who sunk his putt for birdie on the 11th after getting nearest the pin.
He’d bounced off the flag before coming to rest 18 inches away. Great golf Steve.

Andy Taylor is not planning any Christmas shopping this year or for the foreseeable future.
He collected12 Srixons for his nearest the pin in a recent event.
‘The wife’s getting these for Christmas. I’ll be giving her a box of three for each of the next four years.

Congratulations to the two Wychwood teams who made the most of their local knowledge to finish in first and second place. Nigel Edward led his team of In Snape, Oliver Scopes and Andrew Jennings into1st place. 2nd place went to Maxitours ever present Dave Goodwin, Richard Williamson, Dave Greenwood and Phil Robinson. Excellent golf.
