Dear Maxitours player,

Due to the Welsh Governments’ new Covid restrictions the event at Llangollen can’t go ahead.
Antrobus Golf Club have kindly stepped in at late notice.

I played the course 2 months ago with three juniors from Knutsford and I really enjoyed the layout.
There are some great holes and the Club is incredibly friendly- it is a lovely venue and will be very well prepared for our visit.
Please let me know if you can’t play.
Thanks to Roy Ainsworth for all his help.

The cost will be slightly less at £22.50 per person

Yours in golf

Tim

Room for 1 team at Leigh next week!

Maxitours at leafy Helsby

The James Braid designed Helsby Golf Club has been in superb condition all year and today was no exception. This course is always a pleasure to play.

‘That golf course is brilliant.’ Reported well-travelled John Kilner.
There was an intense downpour at 1pm which flooded the greens for half an hour- many thanks to all players for your patience The green keepers worked hard with their squeegies and as they promised within ten minutes the greens were excellent.

The old Helsby Clubhouse burned down and the local folk lore says that the only thing that was saved was the old piano which they buried at the back of the second green. Gary Lees played a little tune as he thinned a couple of chips into the bank on his way to a triple bogey.

The half way house was supported well by our players. Julie did a superb job throughout the day. Pie loving Graham Jackson hit the Helsby sausage rolls for a change (in addition to the meat pies he bought en route this morning..)

Lewis Marland was 72 years old today and he was desperately trying to beat his age. The team were out in 36 but a superb homeward 40 points means he will enjoy his birthday drink tonight.

Mike Georges’ team set a new Maxitours record as the first ever team in 16 years Maxitours history to score no points on their first hole. What made the feat even more impressive is the fact that it is one of the easiest opening holes in Cheshire. Congratulations guys you are really plunging to new depths.

Scoring was incredibly tight with four teams sharing first spot on 84 points which was less points than many teams thought would win on this short but superbly designed course today.

Swinton Parks quietly spoken Kev Hart (9) Andrew Mansfield(17) Jimmy Booth(14) and ex St Hellens rugby league star John McAtee(9) also scored 84 points but had a worse back nine to finish 4th

Peter Mahers team were playing steady golf before Dave Kelly holed his second on the 15th and Gary Phillips followed him in for a birdie. 9 points later they careered up the leader board to finish 3rd.

Simon Hemsley Bramall team were out first and thanks to whizzing round in just over three and a half hours they missed the downpour and took the lead. Gareth Bradley (+3) birdied the 13th 14th and 15th -class.

Mottram Halls Richard Blackwell (12)teamed up with New Mills Tony Jennison(5) Dan Moore(18) and Chris Marshall (13) they had a slow start before picking up seven shots on the closing 4 holes. Jennison birdied the tough 17th hole as the quartet caught fire. They took 1st place on a card play off.

Well played chaps great golf.

Thanks to all players for your terrific support. Tim

Magnificent Manchester results

Maxitours at magnificent Manchester Golf Club

The weather was once again kind to Maxitours players today.
Wall to wall sunshine and a gentle breeze always shows a golf course off to its very best and Hopwood was stunning today. Twelve deer live in the middle of this course and they were spotted strutting around the 14th hole by several players- beautiful.

The day started well with Clubhouse manager Steve Fleck and his staff on top form.
‘They serve brilliant bacon butties here. If the golf is half as good I’ll be happy!’ Announced Mark Saxon.
The reports from my players were indeed excellent.
‘It was a pleasure to be out there!’ Complimented Alderley Edge legend Stuart Hall.
‘That is a terrific course!’ Praised Christie Beakey who travels from Matlock to play this great track each year.

Some players were delayed due to a crash near Stockport. As it was pairs I managed to do a bit of shuffling. Jim Hodges has to put up with Jonny Barton each week but because he was stuck in on the motorway for an hour I teamed him up with 2 complete strangers ‘Every cloud has a silver lining ‘ Hodges chuckled.

Thanks to everyone for being so understanding and great to deal with.

Don’t ever get stuck in a pub with two electricians. Paul Woodbine has a successful commercial electrician company and he checked in at the same time as highly rated leccy Paul Hammond.
I introduced them to each other – twenty minutes later they were still talking about route 3, thyrestos and DC drives to each other. The registration queue was half way around the clubhouse.

Chris Chidley hit a career shot to within a foot of the hole on the 225 yard 16th. ‘I had no idea where the flag was -I can’t see that far ‘ He admitted afterwards.

Average golfer Norrie Irwan never gets a mention but he scored 5 points on the 14th hole today and wants some lime light. Well done Norrie.

Maxitours sponsor Adam Carolyn from XENTUM is a great bloke and he scored ten points on his first three holes, partner Joe Stanley played the tough closing holes under par and the Knutsford duo were delighted to take 8th place.

Bramalls Peter Maher (17) and Gary Phillips (20) had a strong finish to their round to take 3rd place.
Dentons Craig Tinto (13) and Jack Foster (22) closed with two battling pars into the Rochdale breeze to take a career best 2nd place.

Forty years ago yesterday John Hilton won the European table tennis championship He eclipsed that achievement today with his first Maxitours win of the season. His partner Andy Faulkner normally plays very unsuccessfully with Maxitours legend Mick Mahon but needed a new partner today. Faulkner made a birdie for 4 points on the 1st and the chemistry flowed. They scored 25 points on the front nine and a super 46 points total win by one.

Well played guys great scoring on a tough golf course.
Thanks to everyone for your support,
Tim.

Maxitours at Leafy Lymm

Maxitours at lovely Lymm

Lymm golf course was in truly immaculate condition for today’s Maxitours event.
The course has made massive improvements in the last two years and I had lots of players raving about its’ presentation.
The Club is very forward thinking and there was a real buzz about the place today.
Bar manager Karen and her team were delighted to be kept busy and they were excellent throughout the day.

Those are the best greens I have played on this year!’ Declared Mike Lowe in the second group out this morning ‘The guys will love it out there!’

Incredibly very few of my players had experienced Lymm before and they were all asking to come back next year. ‘ Wow. I never knew Lymm was this good’ announced John Owen.

Friendly Scotsman Don Campbell is a fine two handicapper and has represented Cheshire seniors on several occasions. He is often looking for a game and helps me out sometimes if a team is short. The last two times he has played with complete strangers he has raised their game and they have finished first and second. Today I paired him up with Roy Ainsworth but not even Don could inspire this team. He was dragged down to their level and they finished a miserable 25th place.

Welshman Graham Jones is a lovely man but he missed a six inch putt on the 17th hole. As his teams worst performer he had to buy the drinks. Things went from bad to worse.
He walked around the clubs one-way system and was about to order the drinks when he realised he had forgotten his face mask.
He had to get one from his golf bag so did another circuit of the Clubhouse and once again started to place his long order. Unfortunately, the welsh accent combined with the mask meant the bar man couldn’t make out what he was saying.
‘Sorry sir can you repeat that?’
‘Bloody hell I’ve forgotten!’ And he set off on the one way system for his 3rd and final lap.

It was great entertainment – right up my street George.

The stunning greens and fast running fairways saw the average score in the mid 80’s which is the best of the year and a testament to the quality of green keeping.

Martin France and his local team were just out of the prizes after scoring just two points on their final hole. The green resembles a Pringle crisp and they were spending their prize money with several missed putts.

Simon Hemsley’s team were first out and they set the early pace with a terrific 89 points this led for most of the day until the Denton quartet of Garry Owen(10), Alistair Holloway(13), Josh Forster(9) and Lewis Ramsden(13) came in with 91 points. Garry is a performance analyst for the British Olympic taekwondo team and he couldn’t fault the performance of his guys today. They scored eight points on their closing hole as fitness paid off. Brilliant.

Thanks for your integrity everyone -100% attendance YET AGAIN.
Yours in golf, Tim

Maxitours at super Didsbury

*Spaces for 1 team at Lymm on Tuesday and 2 pairs at Hopwood on Thursday

Maxitours at delightful Didsbury

The sunshine was out at Didsbury for the latest Maxitours event. What a Club this is!
Highly rated green keeper Rob Davies kindly mowed a huge ‘Maxi’ into the bank on Didsbury’s third hole! – Brilliant. It is great to be recognised at last- I will try not to change too much. Everyone was delighted with the superb course presentation despite a very wet summer. Well done Rob.

It was also great to see the Club Captain Alan Collins meeting my players and wishing us well this morning. Thank you. Club manager Caroline and stewardess Caroline were also incredibly friendly – perhaps this is why the club has increased it membership so much this year – keep up the great work Didsbury.

Thanks also to Golf manager trainee Joe Stanley who proudly invited Maxitours to play at Didsbury last year. Top man.

The report is shorter than usual as I played my usual below average golf in a competition this morning and was playing catch up all day. Thanks to Karen Gallagher for handing the cards out this morning.

Every golfer knows what a huge advantage local knowledge is. Intelligent strategy can save a player numerous shots. Today we were joined by lovely Didsbury member Chih Hu. He played as if he had never seen the course before and his team finished in last place.

Paul Robinson picked up his new Callaway clubs this week and struck his opening tee shot to 18 inches to win nearest the pin on the par three first. He soon got used to them and played his usual rubbish for the next 17 holes.

Denton’s Garry Owen(10) Mark Bone (11) Alistair Holloway(14) and John Forster(9) took third place. They had the best back nine of the day 44 points to add to their average front nine.

Mottram Halls Richard Blackwell and his team are still without a win this year but another solid performance sees them finish in 2nd place with 83 points. They had a costly dropped shot on the tricky final hole.

Hale’s Brian Greenbank (7) Dave ‘Ive got to get home for the baby’ Wainwright(11) Greg Davison (18) and Angus Mully- Brown(16) enjoyed their first win for a couple of years. They also dropped a shot on the closing hole but the rest of their back nine was superb. Well played chaps, very popular winners.

Thanks for your attendance everyone. Superb.

Excellent food available 9am -5pm
Masks are required in all areas of the clubhouse. They can be removed whilst seated. Also I am sure that all the players will be aware but anyone who lives in the greater Manchester area which are still subject to restrictions cannot socialise with others inside the Golf Club. Lymm are operating a strict two households per table inside but looking at the weather forecast for next week I suspect most people will be sat outside.
