Maxitours at leafy Lymm
Lymm was the latest majestic venue to host a Maxitours event. The course was presented in immaculate condition by head greenkeeper Rick Sinker and his staff who were out early this morning ironing their stunning greens. There was plenty of praise from my players for this vastly under-rated gem:
‘What a course – I didn’t even know Lymm had a golf course’ Declared Les Russon.
‘I Thought the course was fantastic!’ Announced Ian Goulty
‘That was exceptional – I might bring our Captains day here.’ Said an impressed Frank Hill.
I always like the friendly Club atmosphere whenever I visit at Lymm and Head pro Steve McCarthy and his assistant Fizz are great lads who couldn’t do enough for me today- thank you very much.
John Johnston is a lovely Irishman and he just returned to England after watching the terrific Open taking place in his home town of Portrush. We both see each other in Cottons gym and we have regular chats near the chocolate vending machine. I only found out today that he was very, very high up in the Inland revenue. John found the golf course taxing today and he refused to give me his self-assessment when I asked him how he played.
Bored Johhny Barton fancies himself as a poet and he handed me a piece of paper with ‘Lymmerick’ written on it.
‘There was a young fellow from Lymm,
Who went to play golf on a whim,
He hit his first drive in to a bee hive,
And so his second, a stinger, was grim!
Thanks very much Johnny. Don’t give up the day job.
Also on the bee theme- David Treadwell was in his garden yesterday and had argument with a wasps nest and he ended up with 14 stings on his legs. The pain continued today for the likeable church-organ playing man after his team could only manage 61 points and a last place finish.
Nigel Ashton is a proper Northerner and I overheard him talking to his team after his round. ‘It’s too hot.- Ah prefer pullover weather’.
‘Ah think the Climates changing – it was definitely hotter today than yesterday.’ You can’t argue with that.
Dave Smith had yet another uneventful round on the golf course and fails to win a prize yet again. The highlight of his day was when a Buzzard tried to fly off with his ball on the 15th hole.
Les Russons Bramall team took 4th spot with 85 points but they were pipped by Richard Blackwells Mottram Hall team who had the same score but a slightly better back nine to take a deserved 3rd place.
Famous retired Liverpool solicitor Jim Rymer(18) is playing golf with the Bishop of Liverpool next week. His team of john Dickenson(20) Pete Newey(15) and Peter Griggs(16) had some divine intervention on the course as a poor 37 points on the front nine was followed up with a miracle 49 points on the back nine!
Taking first place was the Jon Hudson(10) Bramall Park team. These four lovely guys play each month without any success, They actually won a callaway shirt each seven years ago and insist on wearing them every time they play. Today the lucky shirts paid off and they romped home with an excellent 89 points. Great golf chaps, well played! Mike Hill(6) Rob Blane(17) and Gary Brooks(10) made up the quartet.

Results from Magnificent Manchester Hopwood
Many thanks to PGA Coach of the year 2018 Matt Turnock for running my event today:
The superb venue of Manchester Hopwood (previously used for European Tour School Stage 1 Qualifying) was in tip top condition. There were plenty of compliments throughout the day for their Head Greenkeeper Matt on the excellent condition of the course. Everyone agreed that the greens were fantastic.
‘That is my favourite Maxitours venue’. Remarked vastly experienced Rob Weston. ‘This has to be the best course in Mancjester.’
The excitement of the first day of the Open was in the air. On hearing of Rory McIlroy’s opening quadruple bogey 8 one player commented “He did what !! even I didn’t take that many on my first hole today!!!”
Rory certainly could have done with Tony’s Prices finish after the friendly Matlock man impressively holed out on the 18th for an eagle “2” for 5 points to seal a sensational win alongside his playing partner Chris Gregory on 50 points. Well played chaps!
Rick Shaw and Jonathon Oldknow took 2nd with 47 points and Simon Taylor and Mike Savage had a career best 3rd place also with 47 points to the surprise of many including themselves.
Thanks to everyone for your support.

Maxitours at lovely Lancaster
Lancaster was the latest five-star setting to host a Maxitours event. The practice ground is terrific, the chipping and putting green are awesome and the course is wonderful. In addition they have a castle as a clubhouse. Add to all that a friendly membership and a Captain who made the effort to come down to wish us well and you can see why Lancaster Golf Club is now recognised as one of Lancashires finest. There is nothing to fault about this venue.
‘Absolutely brillianto course!’ announced Mario Capastano.
‘Wonderful!’ Declared Simon Poucher.
Simon Taylor is a great guy who has only recently joined Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club. I’m not sure how they let him in because I thought you had to be a competent golfer to be put on the waiting list.
After a paltry 33 points on the front nine his team were surprised to score 7 points on the tough 12th hole. Normal service was resumed on the short 13th. The easiest hole on the course was playing just 129 yards and players were ripping it up. Taylors’ fourball ended up within three feet of each other in the same little bunker to the left of the green. Only three managed to get out and only one managed to two putt as they walked off with a deflating single point. ‘We still enjoyed it’ Added Simon.
Barrie Simpson was pulling his hair out as teammate Rick Shaw played the wrong ball to earn his team a two shot penalty and then if that wasn’t bad enough another team member -friendly Dutch man Koos Alders -played the wrong ball three holes later. They narrowly missed out on the prizes.
The Davyhulme team led by John Cox(18) Peter Ellis (13) Brian Johnson(17) and Andrew Cox took 4th place with 82 points, Carden Park’s Nigel Ashtons team finished in 3rd also on the same score but with a stronger finish.
Wealthy and young Retired coppers Neale Laurent(13) and Martin Schofield (3) teamed up with Darren Burgess(8) and Gareth Winstone (11) to take 2nd place in an excellent team effort.
RAF Tornado fighter plane navigator Dave Sully showed his fearless side as he rolled in six birdies to earn his team a first victory in over three years. Sully is famous for carrying around a 1980s bum bag and nobody knows for sure what is in it. He normally plays like a bum but today he was sheer class. Even his wife Donna (15) was impressed and not to be outdone she played the last three holes one under par herself! Steve Heywood(6) and Richard Wakefield (15) watched on in awe.
Well played team- great golf!
Thanks to everyone for your support, brilliant. Tim

Maxitours at delightful Davenport
Another stunning Summers day greeted well over 100 Maxitours competitors at Davenport Golf Club. This picturesque course is a firm favourite and always attracts a large field who enjoy the stunning views, excellent greens and well presented fairways.
The Clubhouse and facilities are superb and Fraser the bar manager is the best in the business.
‘This is my favourite course!’ Said well-travelled Steve Parle ‘It isn’t easy but it rewards good golf shots ‘
Thanks to everyone at this Club for making us feel so welcome. My Dad used to teach Davenport Captain Mick Murphy (he claims my Dad gave him a clip around the era) and it was great to have a chat with the class Club skipper who wished us well today. Thank you.
Dave Antrobus went into panic mode this morning after he was stuck in traffic. He was in no danger of missing his tee time, he was just terrified that he wouldn’t have time to eat all his full English breakfast. He made several calls to playing partners, catering staff and a variety of golf professionals so that his food would be ready for him on arrival.
I don’t think Mike Lowe got any birthday cards when he was a boy. He always has a good root through the pile and looks at everybody’s scorecards when he finishes his round.
‘I love looking at cards’ he told me today.
In today’s event Brian Greenbank played great golf but talked me hole by hole through his level par round. I am getting better at feigning interest so I am getting a little afraid that he might bring his holiday photos to show me next week. Unfortunately, the rest of his Hale team were less than average so they just missed out on the prizes with 81 points.
French Bistro owner Olivier Troalens team finished with an incredible eight points on their final hole to help the Lymm men sneak into 6th place.
Carden Park’s Colin Bryan(9), Paul Fell(5), Mike Lowe(9) and Nigel Ashton(12) finished in 4th place with 83 points and
Ashton in Makerfields Neil Edwards(7), Matty Holland(14), Jimmy Shirley(13) and Jeff Ratcliffe(7) took 3rd with 84 points. They had a best of the day 44 points on the tough front nine.
Dukinfields well-liked Neale Laurent(13), Jack Schofield(10), Paul McDermott(15) and Mark Turner(11) finished strongly to take 2nd on the card play off also with an excellent 84 points.
Taking 1st prize was the Jim Caldwells(11) Wilmslow senior team of Bob Picthall(14), Jon Hume(14) and Alderley Edge legend Stuart Hall(16). It was a great team effort but Jons 4 point birdie on the 17th hole was crucial to their success. Very well played chaps!
Thanks to everyone for your support and 100% attendance today – terrific.
Yours in Golf, Tim
