Maxitours at wonderful Worsley

A lovely soft summers day greeted the one hundred Maxitours golfers who played at lovely Worsley today.

The hosepipe ban is certainly over after recent heavy rainfall but high cloud, sunshine and only a very occasional refreshing shower thrown in were the reward for our travelling players.

The greens were fast and very receptive, even Dave Howson who enjoys playing with plenty of mud in his grooves claimed he got some backspin after hitting one of his better approach shots.

Many thanks to Head Green keeper Nigel who presented the course to an incredibly high standard despite the heavy overnight rain. One of my Maxitours players informed me a couple of weeks ago that the golf course was in great condition and all our players concurred with this after their round today.

‘I don’t know how he does it, those greens were fantastic – they need to pay that green keeper more money!’ reported Steve Heywood.
‘Absolutely first class’ announced Colin Roberts

Very well respected golf pro Andy Cory and the catering staff were all excellent to deal with throughout the day -many thanks indeed.

Full- figured Gareth Bradley from Bramall is a class act and he easily plays to his plus one handicap most weeks without working up a sweat. As he put his clubs in his car after his round he was caught in the only brief shower of the day and he made a short but impressive dash for the clubhouse. Big Gareth was certainly sweating after his run and he struggled to catch his breath as he desperately tried to place his food order with the steward. ‘Can I have a cheese and ham toastie?’ he gasped ‘with extra cheese.’

Softly spoken, unsuccessful golfer John Royle normally enters the clubhouse quietly by the back door each week . After his shock win last week John was nodding, waving and chatting to everyone in the car park he then skipped into the club house with both arms raised in the air and a big smile on his face. He will be coming in the back door once again next week .

John Hunt played with brother Neil Hunt in today’s event. They both played like Noel Hunt as more than a few trick shots disappeared in the deep undergrowth as they finished in a lowly 18th place.

Ryan Giggs was happily pottering in his garden this morning which borders the 5th hole. Giggs amazingly went throughout his entire football career without picking up any serious injuries however he nearly had one today and he had to use all his pace and tricky footwork to avoid a vicious low Dave Stanhope hook .

Steve Johnson (24) plays with his Crewe team every month with absolutely no success whatsoever. Last night he said he was available to play and I teamed him up with the competitive Ed Wilkinson(6), Peter Atherton(11) and Martin France(3). The team finished in third place with 85 points. ‘I ve actually won a prize-I can’t believe it!’ Said a delighted and emotional Johnson.
‘Yeah and we would have won first prize if you’d got us a decent partner Tim’ added France with a friendly wink.

Ashton on Mersey brothers Peter(6) and Gordon Hamlett(10) teamed up with Paul Randall(9) and Gary Hempstead(12) to take 2nd place. Pete nearly got out a hamlet after he missed a costly three footer on the last. He soon forgot about the miss and went home happy after four quick pints in the bar.

RAF fighter pilot Dave Sully(6) from Manchester Hopwood and his team swooped to take first place with 88 points. Steve Heywood (8) Nigel Dibble (11) and Yash Turgot(15) completed the talented quartet. Sully picked up three gross birdies but it was Nigel ‘dribble’ Dibble who lived up to his name as he cleverly lagged his first putt close to the hole to secure a winning par at the last.

Congratulations chaps great victory!
Thanks to all players for your brilliant support, Tim

A fabulous day for golf with benign conditions and a comfortable temperature made for a perfect combination.

As John Hilditch checked in he made mention of the Tiger Woods video being released of his failed sobriety test and said if he was as famous as Woods there would be hundreds of such videos of him staggering around but mainly from lads golf holidays and not driving !!

Iain Bartholomew turned 50 yesterday but was not impressed when he was asked would he now be entering the Seniors section – you don’t look a day over 40 Barty !!!

It was a game of two halves for top Premier League Ref Mike Dean’s team as they went out in a mediocre 36 points but came storming back in with 41 on the back nine for a respectable 77.

Gary “Big Boy” Brooks (new nickname now) drove the 1st with a monster shot of over 300 yards to 20 feet and then calmly rolled in the putt for a dream start but more was to come on the Par 4 406 yard 5th when he holed his wedge from 120 yards for yet another eagle WOW !!!!! Unfortunately the rest of Gary’s team could not help him out as they came in with a middle of the pack score of 76.

Much was made of the fantastic condition of the course so all praise to the green keeping staff and also to top Steward Lee and his catering team for the superb breakfasts, bacon and sausage baps and other freshly made culinary delights that were prepared throughout the day.

As always the management team of Peter & Fiona plus Sam in the Golf Shop were all very attentive and accommodating throughout the day so thank you to them for a smooth operation.

Thanks also to my friend and fellow PGA colleague Matt Turnock for stepping in and making the day run trouble free again so I could relax and enjoy my family break. “It’s a tough job but someone has got to do it I suppose” commented some Maxitours regulars apparently when they found out I was away. Another player commented “I’m coming back as Tim Maxwell in my next life”.

Congratulations to John Stubbs, Dave Allen, Guy Hall and John Royle on a fantastic performance today and a return to the winners podium compared to last week when they couldn’t hit a cow’s backside with a banjo. Super to see these guys in the prizes.

Thanks to all those who played today and for your continued support.

Regards

Tim

Maxitours at balmy but brilliant Bramall Park

Bramall Park was the stunning setting for the latest Maxitours event.
This is a superb venue and all the field were raving about the quality of the golf course. Many of my players now rated it as their favourite golf course in Manchester.

‘When are we coming back? That was great!’ said Mike Verdon
‘I really, really enjoyed that.’ Beamed Martin Bramwell
‘Everything about that course is great- it’s my new favourite’ Said posh scouser Garry Parle
‘ you can also find your ball in the rough’ he added thankfully.
‘I Really enjoyed that, the course is so neat and tidy- excellent !’ said Sam Leach
‘Where is the nearest crown green bowls club? I’m giving up golf’ said Graham Bates.

The Clubhouse and veranda have been renovated and are a real improvement for this superb club. Thanks to all the staff for your hospitality. Craig Daggitt the home pro is highly respected by his peers and is a model Club professional. He was back tidying the electric trolleys away at 8.30pm this evening- legend .

After another bad round Blackburns’ John Farnsworth tried to make himself feel better as he looked for evidence of his more successful relative in the Clubhouse. ‘Me muther used ta live round ere before she moved up North and me arf cousin has ‘is name ont’ one of these ere winners boards.’
‘Did he have a funny swing like you?’ enquired team mate Richard Palmer.

Dave Beards team teed off early which was lucky as they played the tough 10th and 11th holes at midday so there weren’t many passing commuter trains. It was a hazardous stretch of line for any train drivers as his teams balls visited the tracks with regular occurrence.

Dave Timmons’ back swing has more movement than a tramps vest but he made an impressive eagle on the second hole to silence his critics.

In today’s event seventy five year old Keith Potter played like Harry Potter as his ball magically disappeared into the cup whenever he got on the putting surface. He led Richard Blackwell’s team into a 6th place finish. Hale Golf Club teams battled it out to 4th and 5th spot with Brian Greenbanks’ team pipping the more talented and better looking Martin Bramwell quartet with an excellent back nine.

Lymm’s Roger Percival(6) teamed up with Warrington’s Ed Wilkinson(6), Andy Wright(8) and Martin France(3) to take 3rd spot -once again on a card play-off. After a very average 39 points on the front nine they caught fire on the back nine scoring 43 points thanks in no small part to charismatic Ed Wilkinson’s solid driving.

The Ashton on Mersey quartet of Chris Brownhill(15), Pete(6) and Gordon Hamlett(10) and Gary Hempstead(12) finished alone in 2nd with 83 points. The team could have won but out of form Chris contributed just twice. ‘Sorry about that lads, let me buy the drinks.’ Was all he could mutter to his team after play.

Dave Stanhope’s golf is sometimes excellent and sometimes poor but the extremely likeable Knutsfordonian was timing it well today. He teamed up with on form Phil Smeathers(6), wealthy pharmacist Giles Terry(15) and old Tom Jarvis(14) to secure their first ever Maxitours win by an impressive 4 shot margin. Great golf chaps, Well played.

Thanks to all who played today, I hope you managed to enjoy your golf on what has been a very sad day for the people of Manchester. Tim
