Maxitours Singles at Knutsford

The Knutsford Golf Club was bathed in sunshine for today’s singles event. The course was a real credit to top green keeper Mark Dingle and his extremely hard working staff. The superb putting surfaces and fairways were praised by all of today’s players. Knutsford in this condition must surely be the best nine hole course in the North!

Tony Wilson informed his playing partners in the bar that a few of his downhill putts on the freshly ironed greens were really fast. He explained how he tried to hit them not in the middle of his putter but off the toe, so the ball sets off a little slower. ‘Did you leave your socks on?’ enquired his pal Richard Palmer.

In today’s event likeable Steve Johnson(22) from Woodside set off gained his first Order of Merit points after an excellent score of 38 early in the day, this was later matched by the high quality trio of Carl Kennedy(12), Ruel Spence(12) and Andy Hockenhull(16) who all shared fourth place. Martin Firth(5) showed his class as he shot a gross 72 to finish third however a three putt at the last proved to be costly for the big hitter.

United legend Stuart Pearson(4) showed us he is also a very fine golfer and he dropped just one shot today to finish second also with 39 points. Bramall’s Paul Mizen(18) made a majestic par four on the tough 18th hole and this took his points tally to 40 points and his first ever Maxitours victory- very well played Paul!

In tonight’s famous shootout the top ten players in the Shotsaver Order of Merit all teed off hoping not to be the first to be knocked out in the sudden death format. Barney Ross did his Brian Barnes impersonation as he had spent all afternoon sampling the local bitter. Barney is a great player however on the 1st hole he staggered from one side of the course to another, missed a three foot putt and happily headed back to the Knutsford bar.

Phil Vokes, Paul Dalby and Phil Ashcroft stood up best to the intense pressure of the nine hole knock-out and they were the last three standing on the 8th tee. Good pals Dalby and Vokes made terrific fours to go head to head at the last. Vokes terrific drive piled on the pressure and his par was good enough to win the Shotsaver shootout – brilliant golf.

Congratulations to Paul Dalby a great golfer and real gentleman who won the Winter Order of Merit after some wonderful golf. Martin Firth and Phil Vokes finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Many thanks to Ian and Anne who provided excellent food, service and hospitality throughout the day.

Thanks to all players for your terrific support this Winter, I really hope you had plenty of enjoyable days on the links.
Yours in Golf,
Tim

Maxitours at The Mere

The 2014 golf season officially started with 92 of the best players in the world competing for the US Masters. Nearly 150 of the best Maxitours competitors arrived at classy Mere today looking forward to the start of their golf season.

Arnold Palmer teed off in the first group at Augusta this afternoon. Bob Sutton also teed off in the first group at Mere this morning.

Arnie has been one of the games greats. He is perhaps the most charismatic and well loved golfer ever to have lived, he played with panache, aggression and flare and wowed the crowds with his tremendous ball striking. However he is struggling to walk due to problems with his hips. Bob is very similar to Arnie as he also has problems with his hips.

Paul Hodgson struggles to look on the bright side of life. ‘Are you still off 13?’ I enquired. ‘No I’m down to 12 now.’ he replied gloomily. ‘That’s good- has your golf improved?’ ‘No, my handicap’s just come down’.

Steve Morfitt from Barnsley always plays in the Mere event. His broad Yorkshire accent is hard to understand. Today he confused one of the well spoken young blonde Mere waitresses. She asked him what sandwich he would like to order ‘can I have chicken, duck.’ He answered.

In today’s competition Ted Taylor opened his clubface and feathered in a high rescue club to within two feet of the pin on the 14th and take the nearest the pin prize. Playing partner Mick Kerin said he couldn’t break the news that he wasn’t in the 2’s sweep until after Ted rolled the ball confidently into the middle of the cup. Young Joe Campion took nearest the pin on the 8th hole.

Three teams tied for 3rd position on 81 points and all had to be separated on the best last three holes. Every golf shot is enjoyed by someone and a missed 8 inch putt by Andrew Holmes left his team close to tears. This meant Jim Caldwells team were delighted to finish a seasons best fourth and the Wigan team of Phil Dermott, Phil Cooney, Danny Ritchie and Carl Dermott took to the podium in third place.

Second place went to the Didsbury low handicap team of Paul Dalby, Paul Sherlock, Phil Vokes and Steve Latchford with a solid 83 points. Taking today’s honours were top cricketer Gary Garner and his son Jordan, Graham Robins and big musician Phil Ashcroft. A wonderful birdie at the last saw Phil dancing as he entered the clubhouse as his team took their first victory of the year.

Many thanks to Lancashire amateur golfing legend John Gallagher from Cleveland/Srixon who kindly sponsored today’s event and he also provided the srixon ball fitting facility.

Maxitours www.designerradiatorsdirect.co.uk AMAM at Sandiway

A stunning day for golf greeted over 100 Maxitours golfers at Sandiway today.
Once again we were made to feel very welcome by this wonderful club.

The magical weather also produced some magical shots.
First Jim O’Driscoll holed his second shot for an eagle on the stroke index one 7th hole, then Phil Lockett holed his approach shot to win nearest the Pin in two on the par four 8th hole. Finally the unlikely figure of Bob Sutton could be seen happily picking his ball out of the 18th hole after a superb hole in one.

Tony Wilson rarely gives his team mates compliments however today he congratulated team mate Frank Hindle on an excellent front nine- ‘Frank was brilliant he really kept us in it early on today -mind you he was rubbish for the other 27 holes’ he quickly added.

In the two day event the scoring was very close indeed with Eddy Sterling, Dave Blood and Pete Short’s team all finishing just short on 162 after two solid rounds. Chris Hegarty(8), Paul Bennett(11), Graham(10) and Malcolm Brownhill(12) had the round of the day with a superb 86 point haul which moved them up into a second place finish.

Pie connoisseurs Des Kelly(16), Phil Lockett(8), Pete Hall (4)and Hetash Patel(20) led overnight and after a solid start they started to feel the heat on the back nine. A tremendous Lockett birdie at the last calmed the nerves and they enjoyed their victory over a post round pint of San Miguel or two.

Many thanks to all players for supporting my first two day event, the event proved to be a big success and looks set to be repeated next year.

Thanks also to the event sponsor Jonathon Lynch who not only supported the event but played great golf this week.

Maxitours at Stockport www.designerradiatorsdirect.com AM AM

Day one of the fantastic two day AM AM at Stockport and Sandiway saw well over 100 competitors playing the superb Stockport Golf Club in lovely warm bright conditions.

Overnight rain had left some Saharan sand deposits on players cars which arrived from the African desert on the warm Southerly wind. Iain Perkins added a bit more sand to the atmosphere as he struggled to get out of the bunker on the 16th.

Head Golf Pro Gary Norcott advised us before play that there may be the odd wet patch on the course but Maxitours players found the exact opposite and they were very impressed with the Cheshire gem. Big Jim Driscoll said that there were no occasions when he saw any casual water. ‘He’s carrying so much weight on a dry day he can take his normal stance in the car park and water comes over his shoes’ remarked playing partner Frank Massey.

In today’s event the benign conditions saw some excellent golf. Colin Lynch usually only gets a Maxitours mention due to the fact he has a salmon pink Ferrari, his Lambourghini driving son sponsored today’s event and this inspired the cheerful Lancastrian to play some of the best golf of his career. Teaming up alongside Lewis Birch and Adam Swarbrick they took the daily prize with a solid 85 points.

Talented Colin is with another team tomorrow and so unfortunately he is ineligible for the main 36 hole prize.

In pole position is the Des Kelly team from Poulton Park with 84 points, Dave Blood’s team from Denton is in second place with 82 points. Swinton Park ’s Pete O’Neill and Eddy Sterling from Wychwood Park have ordered their teams to have an early night as they are just four shots off the early pace.

Colin Roberts Alsager team (76 points) face a sleepless night as they attempt to win the seniors prize tomorrow.

Bob Sutton and Ron Sloanes teams nearly made Maxitours history by failing to make the cut but due to the new Maxitours 20 shot rule (within 20 shots of the leaders) they narrowly made the grade.
