Results from Sandiway

As I am a family holiday the report is briefer than usual. Many thanks to all who played. Apparently once again the weather was much better than forecast so a dry day for everyone and sunshine from midday.
Big thanks to Karen Gallagher for running the event so smoothly- she assures me that their were Lots of good comments about the course & as usual all the staff were very helpful.

Karen is normally very professional however the results she sent through show Mick Mahon and Frank Hindle taking second place on 42 points. This must surely be a clerical error?

Sandiway is a great test and despite excellent conditions this tricky course kept winning scores in the low 40’s which is a testament to the superb design and testing greens.

Maxitours at Pleasington

A windswept Pleasington was the beautiful but testing setting for today’s latest terrific Maxitours event. Many thanks to Manager Chris Williams and his team for their hospitality today.

Pleasington Golf Club has impressively large and very expensive patio windows. I thoroughly enjoyed watching some interesting short game action as I was able to look out over the huge 18th green during the course of the day.
Peter Griggs did a terrific Doug Sanders impersonation as he missed a simple putt which would have taken Jim Caldwell and himself into a career best second place. ‘It was pathetic’ he muttered to himself as he sat teary eyed in the corner of the bar gazing deep into his orange squash.
Iain Bartholomew left both his putts short ‘These greens are excellent, but they are not as quick as Augusta’ he commented loudly, adding ‘did I tell you I went to watch the Masters this year?’.
Music fan Mike Mahon faced a tricky chip onto the green off a tight lie and he looked increasingly concerned as his thinned approach hurtled towards the double glazing. He started singing his favourite tune of the 90’s ‘Oh sit down, Oh sit down, OH SIT DOWN!’

In today’s event the scoring was very average. Ian Neilson from Shaw Hill played the round of his life however he was devastated to leave a 9 inch put short of the hole on the 10th. ‘The green was slower than I thought -and it was a little bit uphill’ he explained to his shell shocked partner Mark Birtwistle. Their 41 points was good enough to take third place.

Alistair Brown from Mere played alongside his happy and wealthy pal Barry Hawley-Jones. Ex European Tour Pro Alistair is now a respected amateur and he still has great ball control. He was known as one of the straightest hitters on the tour. He is still so straight last week his playing partner Barry told him to lay up to a stream crossing the fairway ‘I’m going to run it over the bridge’ replied arrow straight Brown. Today as others were fighting the wind he carefully caressed his ball around the breezy course to earn the classy partnership a first ever Maxitours podium finish.

Taking today’s honours were Bramall’s Ian King and Darren Whittaker. They were the first match out and had a stunning 25 points on the front nine. As the wind picked up and the first showers fell the likeable duo scrapped their way to an inward 18 points to take first prize. Well played chaps!

Maxitours at Perfect Prestbury

Gentle overnight rain, a very well presented Prestbury Golf Course and just a breath of wind provided perfect golfing conditions for today’s Maxitours players. The scoring was excellent and even Alan Clough managed a little bit of back spin on one of the soft receptive greens.

Wealthy Prestbury has the best lost property section on the tour. Alf Shillitoe’s wardrobe is in desperate need of an upgrade and he was found in the changing room more than once looking longingly at one of the old sweaters waiting to be claimed.

Dave Stanhope is a great guy and is desperate to be mentioned in the Maxitours report. Unfortunately due to a very balanced personality and very average golf game there is not much to write about him. Once again Dave finished in a mediocre ninth position but apparently he cooked a nice roast dinner on Sunday.

As a young pro my coach Pete Cowan told me to take neat shallow divots like strips of streaky bacon rather than pork chops when striking my mid iron shots. Graham ‘hog roast’ Aspinall prefers a steeper angle of attack as his team finished in last spot.

In today’s event Martin Firth’s rich vein of form continued as he helped his team to accumulate 86 points. In last weeks singles at the nine hole Knutsford course, straight hitting Firth finished in 3rd place but he struggled on the back nine as his ball kept landing in his front nine divots. His team were delighted with a fourth place finish.

It is great to see Carl Kennedy(12) record his first top three finish for nearly a year however Dan Benson(2) was the star of the show as he played the four par threes in just 9 shots. His smooth swinging younger brother Ollie(18) and Ian Broughan(5) completed the team which scored 88 points.

Iain Bartholomew(3) caddied for Jamie Donaldson in the par three event at the Masters a couple of weeks ago and he caused some ‘hoopin and hollerin’ when he rolled in a 30 foot putt at the last when he was allowed to play a shot. Today he played like a top pro and he scored an incredible six birdies in the space of seven holes around the turn. This helped his much less talented team of John Hilditch, Tim George and Ian Noake to an excellent 89 point haul.

Late in the day Gary Garner(6) also scored 89 points playing alongside his son Jordan(17), Pete Walker(14) and Conor Winstanley(7). After a solid front nine the Ellesmere men were struggling on the tough 13th hole before Pete Walker holed a superb 70 yard chip and run to give the team a timely boost.

Maxitours Singles at Knutsford

The Knutsford Golf Club was bathed in sunshine for today’s singles event. The course was a real credit to top green keeper Mark Dingle and his extremely hard working staff. The superb putting surfaces and fairways were praised by all of today’s players. Knutsford in this condition must surely be the best nine hole course in the North!

Tony Wilson informed his playing partners in the bar that a few of his downhill putts on the freshly ironed greens were really fast. He explained how he tried to hit them not in the middle of his putter but off the toe, so the ball sets off a little slower. ‘Did you leave your socks on?’ enquired his pal Richard Palmer.

In today’s event likeable Steve Johnson(22) from Woodside set off gained his first Order of Merit points after an excellent score of 38 early in the day, this was later matched by the high quality trio of Carl Kennedy(12), Ruel Spence(12) and Andy Hockenhull(16) who all shared fourth place. Martin Firth(5) showed his class as he shot a gross 72 to finish third however a three putt at the last proved to be costly for the big hitter.

United legend Stuart Pearson(4) showed us he is also a very fine golfer and he dropped just one shot today to finish second also with 39 points. Bramall’s Paul Mizen(18) made a majestic par four on the tough 18th hole and this took his points tally to 40 points and his first ever Maxitours victory- very well played Paul!

In tonight’s famous shootout the top ten players in the Shotsaver Order of Merit all teed off hoping not to be the first to be knocked out in the sudden death format. Barney Ross did his Brian Barnes impersonation as he had spent all afternoon sampling the local bitter. Barney is a great player however on the 1st hole he staggered from one side of the course to another, missed a three foot putt and happily headed back to the Knutsford bar.

Phil Vokes, Paul Dalby and Phil Ashcroft stood up best to the intense pressure of the nine hole knock-out and they were the last three standing on the 8th tee. Good pals Dalby and Vokes made terrific fours to go head to head at the last. Vokes terrific drive piled on the pressure and his par was good enough to win the Shotsaver shootout – brilliant golf.

Congratulations to Paul Dalby a great golfer and real gentleman who won the Winter Order of Merit after some wonderful golf. Martin Firth and Phil Vokes finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Many thanks to Ian and Anne who provided excellent food, service and hospitality throughout the day.
