Maxitours at West Lancashire Golf Club.

Clear blue skies and a challenging wind were the reward for the Maxitours players who made the trip to the Championship standard West Lancashire Golf Club today.

An early shower followed by a hail storm and gale force winds caused even the seagulls to take shelter, however the skies soon cleared and the general consensus was of a ‘brutal but very enjoyable day!’
‘All we needed was a plague of locusts and we would have had the lot!’ observed soft Yorkshire man David Kelly.

A few Manchester United fans turned up looking miserable and bleary eyed after a disappointing and late night at old Trafford yesterday. Crazy fan David Hillier looked depressed after the Sunderland defeat and his woes continued on the golf course. In fact he actually scored more penalties than the reds as he saw his ball flying out of bounds over the Southport – Liverpool railway line on the long 11th.

(Things are not all bad for the red faithful -apparently David Moyes has promised to get United into a major European competition next year, but he hasn’t decided which song they are going to sing yet.)

Today was a day for hitting controlled low shots under the wind. Tiger Woods would relish playing his trademark low ‘stinger’ into the breeze. ‘Most shots I hit today were stingers’ complained frost bitten Dave Parsons blowing on his numb fingers after hitting several of his very own ‘trademark’ thinned iron shots.

The scoring in today’s tough conditions was understandably very average. Gary Hempstead(11) returned fresh from playing badly a Portuguese pro-am and he turned on the style in front of his home fans. Gary contributed extremely well to earn his team of Mark Davin(3), Mark Simister(11) and Brian Kelly(13) a career best 4th place with 71 points.

Bramall’s brilliant Richard Blackwell(13), Andy Hamlett(9) and Ron Jolley(16) earned some valuable Order of Merit points as they teamed up with Simon Hemsley(9) to score 73 points and 3rd place.

There was some magical golf from the Didsbury team as Barney Ross(3) holed a full wedge on the par five 2nd and Paul Dalby(3) holed an old fashioned bump and run approach with his 6 iron on the 7th hole to collect valuable eagles for their team. Phil Vokes(2) and school teacher Kevin Hamilton(+1) also played well to earn second place for the high quality fourball.

Today was a day when experience, desire and determination were required in order to succeed. The ageing yet charismatic team from Swinton Park has all these qualities in abundance. They picked up four shots on the tough stretch from the 13th to 15th holes to earn their first victory of the winter. Smooth swinging Frank Massey(12) relished the challenge and also commented on the excellent quality of the tees and greens. Jimmy O’Reilly(10), John Reilly(7) and Jim O’Driscoll(11) were the rest of the gifted team.

Special mention should go to Ian Buxton from Darwin Golf Club as he defied the odds by completing 18 holes wearing a pair of shorts.

Many thanks to all players for your 100% attendance and support once again today.
Yours in Golf,
Tim

Maxitours at beautiful Vale Royal

A warm January day with plenty of sunshine greeted today’s Maxitours competitors at beautiful Vale Royal in the heart of Cheshire. Ian Embury the General Manager Looks like he has lost weight this Christmas and he and his top staff made us feel very welcome indeed.

Fresh faced Trevor Houghton is 50 years old tomorrow; unfortunately he can’t begin his celebrations early after he could only manage a dismal 35 points today.

In today’s event Bob Sinclair and Dave Stenton from Alsager were delighted to take the over 60’s seniors prize with a superb 43 points on this high quality but testing golf course.

‘Carpet Bob’ Kwan made a rare appearance on Maxitours today. The Macclesfield flooring tycoon was seen taking notes as he had rarely sees such smooth well laid surfaces when he is at work. He scored 41 points playing alongside his carpet fitting son Robert.

John Aikenhead’s building work is usually far superior to his golf. However an unusually good start to his round at Vale Royal today gave him some solid foundations on which to construct his round. He teamed up with taxi driver Steve Ford and they drove away with 3rd position after they collected 44 points.

Denton’s Jim Cox teamed up with Ian Gibson who owns a big insulation company. Gibson is famous for normally LAGGING his putts. Today both putters were hot and the likeable duo knocked in their fair share of putts on the way to 44 points and 4th place.

Second place went to the consistent pairing of Gary Garner and Mark Green who scored an excellent 45 points.

Republic of Ireland legend Frank Stapleton has played some great golf so far this winter, today he teamed up with best selling author Dave Wilson and they scored a superb 47 points. ‘We putted great’ said the legendary Irishman as he tried to hold back the tears during his acceptance speech.

Many thanks to Shotsaver for their terrific continued Maxitours support.

Maxitours at Cracking Caldy

A breezy and impressively dry Caldy was the setting for todays Maxitours event. The testing conditions were enjoyed by a field of over 100 players. The course really was immaculate and there was no evidence of damage from the recent storms and floods which have battered our coastline in recent weeks.

Des Kelly thought it was his lucky day when I told him he was teeing off near the attractive old Golf Clubhouse, unfortunately for Des it is now a converted property situated behind the 6th hole on the most distant part of the course.

Phil Wise has had a heavy festive season, I am ashamed to say he staggered into me as I was ordering a large kebab (chicken, salad, no mayo) in Knutsford just before Christmas. Today he was still talking nonsense and swaying erratically from side to side as he battled in vain against the strengthening Wirral wind.

Caldy is a special venue as it a mix of three courses in one. The first nine holes are magnificent cliff top links, the next five are manicured parkland and the final four holes are historic heathland. Andy Hamlett(9) didn’t play well on any of them however he was well backed up by the improving Richard Blackwell(13), Ron Jolley(16) and John Hilditch(11) as the team finished 5th.

The strong winds and wet conditions favoured the big hitting teams today and the Shrigley Hall team of Brian Hopkins(6), Mike Powell(12), Ross Birch(7) and Charles Herbert(16) enjoyed the challenge as they scored 85 points.

Martin Firth(6), Andy Stubbens(5), Alan Pengelly(13) and Andy Hockenhull(20) scored heavily on the downwind holes and their 86 points was enough for third spot. Phil Ashcroft(15), Graham Robins(17), Gary Garner(6) and Tony Robinson(8) took second place with a terrific 87 points. A huge cheer could be heard in the clubhouse after big Phil holed his approach shot on the first hole to collect five vital points.

Taking todays honours was the North Manchester team of Aiden Hoosen(2), Darren Smith(7), Alan Burton(11) and team captain Gary Hornby(17). Talented Hoosen played great however all the team contributed well as the Mancunians impressively tamed the wind for their first Maxitours victory with 87 points.

Thanks to all players for your terrific support once again today.
