Maxitours at Wonderful Worsley

Historic Worsley Golf Club founded in 1894 was the fantastic setting for todays Maxitours event. Heavy overnight rain saw the course nearly flooded however terrific early morning squeegee work by head greenkeeper Nigel and his excellent team saw the course presented in remarkably good condition.
‘What a great course’ commented Kevin Chisnell ‘I didn’t think it would be that good.’ A sentiment echoed by many players.
There is ‘always one’ and today it was Bill Ross who phoned his team from the Marriott Worsley Park Golf Clubhouse ‘I’m here but I can’t find you’ reported the confused Scotsman.
The Clubhouse at Old Worsley Golf Club provides an excellent platform for analysing personalities and golf swings. Ex-marine Andy Stubbens has an aggressive, ruthless swing and hits it as hard as he can, school teacher Pete Holmes needs plenty of discipline to control his swing, car mechanic John Davies has an oily swing, Ex United goalkeeper Jeff Wealands has well trained hands. Watching a few players today it appears we also have a few carpet beaters, mad axemen and chicken stranglers on the tour.
Ryan Giggs was desperately trying to earn some brownie points this afternoon as he tended to his shrubs in his back garden. Geoff Haynes and Arthur Jowell brightened up his day as he peered over his garden fence and watched them both roll in classy birdie putts on the 5th hole.
Neville Dennis’ early morning team had the wettest ground conditions to deal with and despite this they took the early lead with 84 points ‘that’s the best I’ve played all year’ said the Maxitours legend ‘John was a load of rubbish today’ he added.
As the warm sunshine dried up the fairways and greens, Malcolm Wells and his team of talented golfers took advantage and recorded 87 points. This was then beaten by the Sale team with Pete Moores doing most of the damage despite making the desperate schoolboy fashion error of wearing a black shirt with navy pants.
The big hitting local team of Darren Wood, Dave Ellison, Simon Cusick and Alan Jacobs from nearby Swinton Park eventually took the honours with a wonderful 91 points, four handicap Wood was the pick of the bunch and he recorded four magical birdies today.

As evening closed in there were 30 or so Maxitours competitors enjoying a drink in the warm sunshine on the balcony and it really felt as though summer had finally arrived.

Many thanks to Paul Bailey and his high quality team at the Golf Club, especially the hard working Yvonne who not only cooked the bacon sandwiches but she served them with a smile as well.

Maxitours at the Immaculate Knutsford Golf Club.

The Knutsford Golf course was in immaculate condition for todays Maxitours event, many thanks to Mark Dingle and his hard working greens staff for getting out of bed so early and presenting the course to such an incredibly high standard.

Maxitours got lucky once again with the weather today as there was just a small shower at eleven o’clock but the majority of players enjoyed warm, dry conditions for the whole round. Severe flooding hit surrounding areas both North and South of this stunning venue.

Knutsford is a lovely traditional Golf Club, old fashioned values, old fashioned clubhouse and it was even rudely suggested by Dave Antrobus today that it also has a badly dressed, old fashioned professional.

Hot, big and sweaty Ray Twist looked tired as he sank into his chair after his round on the newly flagged outside patio. Unfortunately the rear two legs of Rays chair were resting on the grass. As Ray sank deep into his chair, his chair sank deeper into the soft turf. A couple of greenkeepers and some serious lifting gear were required to resolve the unfortunate situation. Ray wins three srixons golf balls for incredibly never spilling a drop of his beer throughout his ordeal.

Graham Robins was delighted to record the first hole in one of his very average golf career when his ball disappeared into the hole with a delightfully struck nine iron on the short 14th hole. The Bolton man was so choked with emotion he was struggling to speak clearly as he entered the clubhouse ‘would anyone like a drink?’ he whispered to the steward.
Robins’ magical ace inspired his talented team to finish with an excellent 84 points which was good enough for second position.

The wealthy team of Darren Whittaker, Ian Handy, Ian King and Alan Demmy from leafy Bramall had their best result of the season as they finished 3rd with a solid 82 points.

Narrowly taking the honours today with 85 points was Gathurst Golf Clubs Keith Wheble, Conor Winstanley, Phil Carrington and Phil Ashcroft. The team recorded three 2’s on the 5th hole on their way to their first win of the summer. At the last Carrington coolly rolled in his par putt with more composure than a Mario Balotelli strike.
Ballotelli received a yellow card for displaying his finely tuned torso after scoring against the Germans tonight. In the clubhouse at the end of play Phil Ashcroft quickly took off his shirt as he tried to fit into his first prize xxl Galvin Green shirt, displaying a torso which deserved an immediate six month ban.

Maxitours at superb Conwy

Picture postcard conditions greeted the Maxitours players at Conwy today. The Conwy course was described as ‘the best its ever been’ by helpful assistant pro Andy Blake. The fairways and greens and surrounds were immaculate –it really was in superb condition.

Tubby Dave Antrobus is a salad dodger and he turned up 3 hours early for his start time, he really enjoys the famous Conwy Golf Club breakfast and was terrified in case the chef ran out of bacon.

Dave Henshall was running a little late for his start time ‘Is that clock right?’ he asked his partners ‘No, its up the wall’ replied the quick witted Alan Noden.

Unlucky Paul Hodgson is a lovely chap and is employed as a caring social worker. Today he sat down wearing his newly pressed Galvin Green golf pants ready to enjoy his full English Breakfast ‘I’m looking forward to this today- you wouldn’t believe the week I’ve had’ he remarked chewing on a sausage. Just as he tucked in to his black pudding the plate slipped off the table and a portion of beans fell on his lap.

The likeable Dave Henshall from Didsbury has worked hard on his swing this winter as he was desperate to find some consistency in his game. In his second Maxitours outing of the season he was delighted to record a second consecutive and very consistent last place finish.

Performing well in todays event was the colourful pairing of Alistair Brown and Barry Green from Mere who finished in 4th position with a solid 42 points.

Ted Biddlecombe teamed up with Al Collins and they were delighted with 43 points and 3rd place around the championship links ‘I think that is the best course I have ever played’ said the well-travelled Collins.

Kevin Chisnell and Mo Dah from Mere also scored 43 points to finish 2nd and they incredibly had the same back nine, back six and back three as Collins, only a classy three point haul on the 18th hole separated the two massively talented pairs.

Todays winners were Paul Wrigley and Paul Armstrong from North Manchester , Armstrong watched by a rowdy group of clubmates on the balcony coolly rolled in a high pressure birdie putt at the last to win by just one shot.

Ex professional boxer John Aikenhead has a squashed nose and the Didsbury man hit a snorter on the 15th hole to take nearest the pin in some style.

Maxitours at tremendous Cavendish

The Alister Mackenzie designed Cavendish Golf course was todays tremendous Maxitours venue. All players were raving about the quality of the course after completing their rounds. ‘Those sloping greens were fantastic’ said Matt Pugsley ‘I’ve never enjoyed three putting as much in my whole life.’

One of the benefits of the recent wet conditions has been the absence of bad shorts on the golf course. Unfortunately in todays sunny conditions Arthur Jowell displayed perhaps the worst shorts ever seen in a Maxitours event combined with perhaps the worst legs ever seen in a Maxitours event, lets all pray that more rain is on the way soon.

The England football team surprised the nation recently with the quality of their performance against France . Alan Clough surprised his playing partner with the quality of his golf shots today and he helped big hitting Terry Davison to a 7th place finish.

Geoff Cogswell and Ray Twist drove all the way from the hills of Blackburn to play in Buxton today, it was obvious that they felt immediately at home and really comfortable being surrounded by large numbers of sheep and they scored a solid 40 points to finish in 6th position.

Local member Malcolm Burgess is 74 years old, he still plays off single figures and this experienced golfer used all his local knowledge around the tricky Mackenzie course as he cleverly scored a solid 41 playing alongside Bob Turner.

Big Barry Harrison is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, today he played great golf alongside Denton team mate David Hookes and they scored 43 points to finish in second position.

On form Ray Ward made back to back birdies on the 3rd and 4th holes to give their round a real boost and it was team-mate Gary Garner who finished strongly as they combined well to record 43 points for a terrific first place finish.-Well played chaps!
