Results from Delamere Forest

As the first Maxitours players munched on their pre round bacon baps there were a few worried faces as thick fog threatened to delay play. Just when all seemed lost, Neville ‘Moses’ Dennis arrived and the fog immediately parted to reveal the stunning Delamere Forest golf course swathed in glorious sunshine.

The greens at Delamere are recognised as perhaps the best in Cheshire and today they were exceptional, many thanks to all the greens staff for their terrific work.

Charles Herbert has recently enjoyed watching ‘I’m a celebrity-get me out of here’ today he nearly had to spend a night in Delamere Forest himself after losing contact with his four ball whilst searching for one of his wayward drives.

Didsburys Steve Dunphy rolled in a lovely birdie putt on the 17th hole for four points and teaming up with Barney Ross they set the early pace in the clubhouse with a terrific 47 points.

With the strong field and superb greens a great score was there to be had and it was Shrigley Halls Steve Rhodes(4) and Carl Kennedy(12) from Chorlton who had the ‘X factor’ as they both played superbly for a 48 point haul and victory in todays event. Kennedy, a regular on Maxitours has struggled for form in the past six months, today he was inspired and his birdie on the stroke index 1 got them off to a great start. Rhodes recorded 5 birdies to do most of the damage. Very well played guys. Joe Kirwan and Mike spencer from Bramall finished 3rd with 46 points.

Maxitours now has a prize for best score for the over 60’s and today I upset a couple of players by incorrectly suggesting they may be eligible for this prize. Glynn Jones said my best method was to count the wrinkles on the older players head to determine age (rather like counting the rings on an old oak tree).

Sixty five year old Ian Ainscough birdied both par threes and his wrinkly friend Alan Clough also played great golf as they rolled back the years scoring 24 points on their inward nine to take the super seniors prize in style.

Many thanks to all players for supporting todays event.

Maxitours Pairs Betterball

Another beautiful Autumn day greeted the 108 Maxitours competitors at Prestbury Golf Club today. Still conditions, fast running fairways and yellow tees made conditions ideal for great golf on this stunning course.

Recent weeks had seen some average scoring however today there was some tremendous golf played. Paul Granelli a distant family member of the famous Ice cream dynasty ‘whipped’ a 7 iron close to the flag on the short 7th ‘stick a flake in that!’ said a delighted Granelli as he walked off with nearest the pin. Geoff Andrews was closest after a towering shot into the 17th signature hole.

As the squirrels gathered their nuts in the Autumn sunshine talented Irishman Jimmy O’Reilly was gathering birdies as he partnered John Reilly to take the early lead in the clubhouse with 46 points. Tytheringtons Jason Waite and James Davison matched that score with Davisons birdie on the 7th hole the highlight of his round.

After 15 attempts Ross Birch is yet to win a Maxitour event and today he teamed up with Moby Rawthore and played ‘the best round of my life’ to record a wonderful 51 points. Fireman Birch (10) birdied holes 3,4 and 5 on an incredible front nine helped by Rawthore (4) birdies on the 1st and 8th holes. However Birch is still without a win as his score was amazingly matched by my ex PE teacher Pete Holmes from Macclesfield GC and my Dad (Styal). ‘It was one of those days’ said the unlikely duo ‘we just couldn’t miss’. After a 4 shot general play handicap reduction my Dad will be unlikely to repeat this feat in the near future.

Colin Roberts lost control of his powakaddy crossing a narrow bridge at High Legh GC yesterday and he gracefully fell along with his clubs into the fast flowing stream. Today Roberts was in full control of his faculties and it was his swing that was flowing well as he returned a fantastic 42 points to record the 2nd best over 60’s score. John Wreag and Harry Malpas took that honour with a tremendous 45 points.

Many thanks for playing today, I hope you enjoyed this wonderful golf course which was in superb condition. Many thanks to the greens staff, bar staff and Secretary Neville for their hard work and making us feel so welcome.

Tim.

Maxitours at Ringway Golf Club.

The warm temperature, glorious sunshine and stunning Autumnal colours at todays event made the 108 Maxitours players feel great to be alive!

Ringway Golf Club is a favourite Maxitours winter venue due to the quality of the greens and the freshness of the bacon sandwiches. Today’s event was the popular Am Am format, this is where it is so easy to lose lifelong friends by picking your ball up before asking the rest of you team ‘I don’t get a shot here, do I?’

Paul Taylor always looks smart on the course but it has been noted that he has only one colour in his wardrobe at home and today he turned up in yet another black outfit. Despite his plain clothing Paul hit some dazzling shots as he led his Hopwood team to a terrific 85 point haul. Mike Sweeney surprisingly pulled his weight as he made a stunning birdie on the tough 17th hole.

Retired PE teacher Pete Holmes made a welcome return to Maxitours after a spell of lucrative supply teaching, today however he couldn’t control his team members as they misbehaved on the greens to record just 77points –could do better Peter!

Barry Harrison has struggled for form all summer, today he played great as the Denton team destroyed the testing course and scored 88 points. Even Dave Collinson was on fire and as I sat twiddling my thumbs in the clubhouse I watched him stroke home a birdie putt on the 18th with more confidence than a Balottelli penalty.

Richard Preston hit a great 7 iron to around three feet on the 16th hole and cheerfully signed the nearest the pin marker, as he passed the green three holes later he noticed his marker had somehow been left off the green. Ken Halton subsequently played his shot to 3 feet and he happily signed the marker. The situation was explained to me and I asked them both how far away they were. It was a fascinating study –in fact it was the exact opposite of two fishermen exaggerating the size of a catch, after a couple of hours both players sportingly agreed to share the spoils.

Andy Stubbens was nearest the pin on the 13th.

Many thanks to Fiona the most helpful Secretary in Cheshire , she is not only attractive but very nice as well. Thanks also to highly respected professional Nick Ryan who always goes the extra mile to make Maxitours feel very welcome.

Results from the Mere Golf and Country Club.

The Mere golf and country club was in superb condition for the final Maxitours event of the summer tour. The ‘refreshing’ drizzle didn’t dampen the players spirits and this great golf course was in top condition. Mark Boler and his greenstaff can be proud of the tremendous greens which got nothing but praise all day.

The venue is a playground for the rich and famous, at lunchtime Mere member Sir Alex Fergusson nearly choked on his bacon bap and hid behind his newspaper in the corner of the atrium as he caught sight of Roberto Mancini savouring a fresh pasta dish, complimented with a fine glass of Italian white wine.

When The Mere comes up on the Maxitours rota most players give their shoes an extra polish, comb their hair and put on their smartest golfing outfit. Kevin Barker bucked the trend today as he wore perhaps the worst sweater ever seen at a maxitours event. However this didn’t stop him making great pars on the 5th and 7th holes on his way to a respectable 35 points.

Willie Morgan became the latest Manchester United legend to play on Maxitours and he teamed up with Vale Royal owner Steve Graham. It was Graham who did most of the work appearing on the card 12 times. A birdie on the short twelfth was the highlight of his magical round. ‘The first time I got on the card was when it dropped out of our partners pocket and I trod on it by mistake’ said 8 handicapper Morgan. The home team picked up first prize with their tremendous 44 points.

Gary Garner continued his rich vein of form once again finishing second as he scored an excellent 43 points partnering Mark Green. Mytton Folds Ray Standing and Gary Davies, Andy Cunningham and Roger Percival from Lymm, Paul Granelli and Jonathon Brett from Mere all scored an excellent 42 points in the damp conditions.

Last match in was Kenny Jepsons happy go lucky group of four, ‘Any good wee man?’ asked scotsman Willie Morgan anxiously waiting to collect his first prize. He nearly fell off his chair when Kenny declared both pairs had scored a total of 48 points. ‘I had 22 with my partner and the other two had 26’ smiled Jepson with that famous twinkle in his eye.

Many thanks for supporting today’s event.
