Results from terrific Prestbury

A warm refreshing breeze greeted eighty eight of the most intelligent Maxitours golfers who gathered at the superb Prestbury Golf course today.

These guys new the weather was a gamble, however the threat of putting up the Christmas decorations, or even worse- Christmas shopping with the wife- meant a healthy field assembled in this exclusive corner of Cheshire .

For the first three hours the weather was thoroughly pleasant however an intense downpour at 2.30pm flooded the greens and the event was reduced to 12 holes. Paul Hodgson looked like a drowned rat as he came off the course but the Stoke-on-Trent man was still smiling after a great round saw him finish 4th alongside scratch player Bobby Aston.

Andy Stubbens was absolutely delighted to find a chocolate angel in his advent calendar this morning and his day just kept getting better as he made back to back birdies on 18th and 1st to earn third place playing alongside the nicest man from Bollington, Alan Pengally.

Dave Keen is an excellent Boeing 737 pilot for Thomas Cook Airlines but always finds it a struggle landing his jet in the wind. Today however he was on autopilot and his ball flew majestically through the breeze as he teamed up with co pilot Ian King to take second place with 29 points. This was Keen’s highest ever Maxitours finish. Despite losing his house, car and life savings as the Thomas Cook share prices plummeted recently Dave was still thrilled to win a Srixon carry bag.

Andy Adshead is the top Bank Manager at the Royal Bank of Scotland in Macclesfield and he turned up nice and early to prepare for his round. ‘Do you want to pay for your partner as well?’ I asked nicely as he checked in. ‘No, he can pay for himself- I’m really trying to cut down on my lending at the moment’ said a worried looking Adshead. His Partner and client was the likeable 2 handicapper Mark Richardson and he birdied 5 of his twelve holes as they scored a terrific 32 points and take first place. Well played Guys!

Many thanks to everyone who played today, despite the late rain everyone seemed to really enjoy the day.

Results from Sunny Ringway

The first day of Winter saw the terrific weather continue at classy Ringway today.

The course was a real credit to the greens staff who arrived early to cut and iron the greens in preparation for todays Maxitours event.

Joe Kirwan from Bramall was the first player to arrive in the clubhouse at 9am in order to pick up the £5 note he won off me at St Annes GC earlier this week –well done Joe! (he thought I wouldn’t mention it).

Ringway Golf Club and their respected PGA Professional Nick Ryan, run a first class outfit, even the hooter used for shotgun starts is positioned high on the clubhouse and sounds like a naval fog horn. Ringway members refer to it as the ‘master blaster’.

John Grint normally struggles with his transition from backswing to downswing leading to a gentle fade. Today Nick Ryans timing was perfect and as John reached the top of his swing the blast from the hooter caused him to flail the club on a lovely inside path and to his great delight he hit a majestic draw 200 yards down the middle of the first fairway.

There have been some unbelievable sporting results lately, lowly Crystal Palace knocked United out of the cup last night, even lowlier Manchester City are somehow top of the premier league and it looked like under-rated Mike Lynch and his lowly team could take first place at Ringway after an excellent 81 points.

However, as the players filtered back into the clubhouse there were some solid scores from the lower handicap teams. Well-liked and talented golfer Paul Dalby and his Didsbury team had a strong back nine to score 84 points and this was matched by larger than life scratch lady Cath Rawthore and her strong team from Sale .

Ex Bolton Old Links greenkeeper and holiday shootout winner Gary Garner and his team from Horwich gelled well for a magnicent 85 points and they were delighted with second place.

Businessman Jim Caldwell entered a team of six footers from Wilmslow Golf Club and his guest player was all time leading rugby premiership try scorer Steve Hanley from Sale sharks, a member at Sale Golf Club. John Leighton and Jim played wonderfully however it was Hanley who was overcome with emotion ‘this is the greatest moment in my sporting career’ he said, happily trying on his new golf shoes.

It was noticeable that the Pete Holmes team of ex-schoolteachers and civil servants were ‘Striking’ the ball very well.

Many thanks to everyone for playing today.

The latest Shotsaver order of Merit and start sheet for Prestbury will be released tomorrow.

The Srixon Masters at The Mere

This fabulous Autumn of golf continued as yet another full field enjoyed the wonderful Mere Course today. ‘The Mere’ is home to the rich and famous and Chris Heggarty looked worried when Howard Keele kept smiling at his attractive wife Gail.

Colin ‘Red Ferrari’ Lynch normally gets a few admiring glances when he parks his car at the various golf clubs around the North West, today he looked disappointed when nobody batted an eyelid as yet another ordinary supercar slowly rumbled into the Mere car park.

Before play a few Maxitours players enjoyed a ball fitting session with the Srixon team. It is the job of the Srixon fitter to match your swing to the correct ball for maximum distance, basically the faster the swing the harder the ball compression required.

Big hitting and improving Mike Spencer was advised to use a tour professional Z-star ball, smooth swinging and highly talented John Stubbs will play best using a senior soft feel ball, however very slow swinging Frazer Mackenzie from Knutsford was distraught when he was informed a red dot squash ball would be most suitable for his game.

Recent events on shortened courses with receptive greens had led to some great scoring. Today white tees, tucked away pins and the slick greens led to more challenging conditions which were reflected in the results.

Bruce Willis lookalike Chris Cyprus was in confident mood after victory in the Manchester Alliance yesterday and today he continued his good play partnering Andy Lawman to score 41 points and finish in 4th place.

Local legends John Reilly and Jimmy O’Reilly from Swinton Park play more competitive golf than anyone else in the Manchester , today their fighting spirit and course management saw them record another 41 points for 3rd place. Second place went to the popular Brian Hopkins and Andy Barstow from Shrigley Hall who also had the same score with a better back nine.

Carl Kennedy and Joe York from Chorlton cum Hardy took the honours with a great 42 points, 4 handicap York is a lovely lad despite the fact he is training to be a policeman and he recorded an impressive 5 birdies in his terrific round- great golf chaps.

Many thanks to John Gallagher from Srixon/Cleveland/Galvin for his superb prize table and ball fitting service.
