Maxitours at wonderful Ringway.
Another glorious December day greeted over 100 competitors at the Ringway Golf Club today.
The course drains magnificently and was a real pleasure to play on. The greens were firm and true and they look set to be in superb condition for the lucky members throughout 2017.
Thanks to top Secretary Fiona Cornelious and all the staff for their excellent hospitality throughout the day, Ringway really is a lovely golf Club.
This is the only event of the year when I may get some teams dropping out due to the busy lead up to Christmas as husbands are required to do some last minute shopping. This year it seems Maxitours players got their priorities right as 100% attendance shows that our members put a game of golf before buying their wife a nice present.
‘Looks like I will be going to Thornton’s again’ Chuckled 26 handicapper Kevin Barnton as he picked up his scorecard. He really knows how to treat a lady.
One of our players told me that he missed out on this fixture a couple of years ago when he was dragged kicking and screaming down to Marks and Spencers at Handforth Dean. As his wife was looking at the latest slippers he made the most of the huge mirrors to work on his backswing. As he checked on his dodgy early wrist action he was amused to spot another frustrated golfer working on his grip using the big mirror in the nearby underwear section.
It’s great to know that you are loved and I got a joint Christmas card from regular players Roy Ainsworth and Brian Ankers. Roy ( Chunky as he is known by Maxitours players due to his fondness for kit kats) is recovering from a hip operation and actually came all the way down to Ringway just to wish me all the best and give me the card. ‘It’s from both of us but I was the one who bought the card and wrote it – Brian is so tight he didn’t want to buy his own. ‘
Thanks to Maxitours player Liam Harrison here is some video of the previous two events you may or may not want to catch up on!

In the last event before Christmas Chih Hu’s Didsbury team played like a posse of turkeys as they finished in last place.
Barry Jacksons men played like puddings to finish in second to last.
Andy Wilde’s men had the stuffing well and truly knocked out of them as they also finished in the bottom three.
At the other end of the results wealthy Jim Caldwell(11) is a top man and he brought me a bottle of Christmas wine as he checked in. I was tempted to ‘fix’ the card play-off in return but Jim had to settle for 5th place as Gary Neiles(6) team scored an impressive 45 points on the homeward nine to take 4th place. Both teams scored 83 points.
Third place went to Les Penson(15), Steve Blakeway(3), Graham Jackson(11) and Vernon Hayes(13). These guys have played very consistent golf over the past month and they were delighted to record their best ever Maxitours finish in the last event of the year.
Second place went to Blakely’s Gary Conroy(5), Richard Blackwell (13) , John Hilton (13)and their very own six million dollar man -Steve Austin(14) who used his bionic powers to record a very solid 86 points.
Top of the tree was the Didsbury ‘Bad Christmas jumper’ brigade of Phil Vokes(3), Paul Dalby(4), Paul Sherlock(4) and last minute stand in -Maxitours cameraman Liam Harrison(7). Liam had never played with these lads before and he was impressed. ‘Wow. Those boys can play!’ said delighted Harrison ‘they really made me concentrate and all the putts went in!’ The team recorded twelve birdies between them. Congratulations guys great score!
Thanks to everyone for your amazing support throughout the year. I really hope you have a very Happy Christmas and healthy New Year,
Best Wishes Tim, Suzy, Ella and James Maxwell.

Maxitours at the Mere
A stunning Winters morning greeted Maxitours competitors at the very impressive Mere Golf and Leisure resort . Thanks to Joe Gates and all the staff for your five star service throughout the day – really excellent.
Everyone was looking forward to playing tournament golf after the festive period but unfortunately there were a few guys squeezing into their golfing outfits after an indulgent Christmas.
Gareth Winston won a large Maxitours sweater in late November but he returned it first thing this morning -he has had to ‘supersize’ to an extra large after a couple of weeks on the mince pies. Tom Froome is even thinking about flattening the lie on his clubs. He now has to stand further from the ball now after a few too many quality streets.
In recent weeks I have had two gentlemen by the name of Pete Atherton play at different times in my Maxitours events which has caused some confusion amongst their friends and work colleagues. For the first time both of them actually played today. To clarify things for everybody: the tall, good looking, dark haired strong featured Peter Atherton from Prestbury Golf Club scored 43 points but he was beaten by ‘tubby Pete’ from Lymm who scored 45 points.
Gentle swinging Ben Grayson usually hits his three wood 150 yards. Once when he had a downhill lie with a stiff breeze behind and some adrenaline pumping he has been known to squeeze out 160 yards. Today he hit the longest shot of his career by far. He was dismayed when his fairway approach shot into the 18th green flew off the toe of his club and scuttled across the ice covered Mere towards one of the many lakeside mansions.
‘That has gone at least 350 yards!’ declared playing partner Bob Moore. ‘That’s further than Stenson hits it!’
‘Effortless power’ replied Ben.
In today’s event it was the more intelligent mid to higher handicappers who scored best in the frosty conditions and shortened course.
Likeable Sam Leach(11) and Jonny Barton(18) were delighted to score 48 points to record their highest finish in years as they came in 4th.
Senior players Andy(17) and Peter Veitch(10) are two nice brothers from Hale golf Club. They look absolutely nothing like each other. ‘Luckily we don’t play like each other.’ Added more talented Peter . It was a real team effort today though as both players came in nine times.
Lymm seniors Bob Mather(11) and Alan Forber (14) took second spot with 49 points. Bob is a retired plain clothed police officer who still wears very plain clothes even though he has been retired for 15 years. Alan is warming up for the Portugal trip next week. ‘I think I have peaked too soon!’ he declared.
Stuart Milner(11) and Bill Willocks (13)came down from the hills to take first prize. The Chapel en le Frith members were out in 29 points but this was helped by Milner’s impressive eagle on the tough par 4 sixth hole which earned 5 points. A solid back nine saw a first ever Maxitours win for the Derbyshire duo. Well played chaps!
Gareth Winston recorded a hole in one to win the nearest the pin on the 8th hole. Congratulations.
Many thanks to all players for your support, you were terrific to deal with this morning and despite the winter conditions I hope you enjoyed your day.
