Maxitours at Stockport www.designerradiatorsdirect.com AM AM

Day one of the fantastic two day AM AM at Stockport and Sandiway saw well over 100 competitors playing the superb Stockport Golf Club in lovely warm bright conditions.

Overnight rain had left some Saharan sand deposits on players cars which arrived from the African desert on the warm Southerly wind. Iain Perkins added a bit more sand to the atmosphere as he struggled to get out of the bunker on the 16th.

Head Golf Pro Gary Norcott advised us before play that there may be the odd wet patch on the course but Maxitours players found the exact opposite and they were very impressed with the Cheshire gem. Big Jim Driscoll said that there were no occasions when he saw any casual water. ‘He’s carrying so much weight on a dry day he can take his normal stance in the car park and water comes over his shoes’ remarked playing partner Frank Massey.

In today’s event the benign conditions saw some excellent golf. Colin Lynch usually only gets a Maxitours mention due to the fact he has a salmon pink Ferrari, his Lambourghini driving son sponsored today’s event and this inspired the cheerful Lancastrian to play some of the best golf of his career. Teaming up alongside Lewis Birch and Adam Swarbrick they took the daily prize with a solid 85 points.

Talented Colin is with another team tomorrow and so unfortunately he is ineligible for the main 36 hole prize.

In pole position is the Des Kelly team from Poulton Park with 84 points, Dave Blood’s team from Denton is in second place with 82 points. Swinton Park ’s Pete O’Neill and Eddy Sterling from Wychwood Park have ordered their teams to have an early night as they are just four shots off the early pace.

Colin Roberts Alsager team (76 points) face a sleepless night as they attempt to win the seniors prize tomorrow.

Bob Sutton and Ron Sloanes teams nearly made Maxitours history by failing to make the cut but due to the new Maxitours 20 shot rule (within 20 shots of the leaders) they narrowly made the grade.

Maxitours at blossoming Ringway

The first Maxitours event of the Spring saw the fabulous Ringway Golf Club bathed in glorious sunshine this morning. The freshly mown golf course looked a real picture and was a credit to their talented grounds staff.

With Mothers Day just around the corner wild swinging author Dave Wilson was literally smelling the flowers during his round today. He was to be seen regularly inspecting the local daffodils as the vast majority of his drives missed the generous parkland fairways.

Anton Ellis brought a group of old friends from Knutsford Golf Club with him to Ringway. With a combined age of 302 the team members were delighted to not only finish their round but to finish their round with the same ball they started with. ‘Unfortunately we don’t hit it far enough to lose our balls anymore’ said an upbeat Ellis.

It is widely accepted that the three greatest sporting comebacks of all time were Botham’s Ashes in 1981, followed by Liverpool’s Champions league win against AC Milan in 2005 and then the Ryder Cup miracle at Medinah in 2012. This top three was challenged today however when Neville Dennis returned to the sporting arena after two serious operations and seven months away from the game.
Seventy seven year old Neville rolled back the years and also rolled in three wonderful net birdies to help his team take fourth place and seal the Maxitours seniors prize. His legendary golfing status is now fully confirmed.

Another Maxitours player rolling back the years was John Hilton. He always either signs his scorecard quietly in the car park or by the results desk where there is always a healthy supply of writing utensils. As he walked into the Clubhouse after his round John was quick to spot Gemma the attractive blond waitress (who is a firm favourite amongst many Maxitours players) and made an impressively quick diversion to the bar ‘excuse me love have you got a pen I could borrow?’ he smoothly asked, closely followed up with his best movie star smile.

The early starters made the most of the pleasant sunny conditions and Airline pilot Dave Keen(13) helped his Bramall teammates Charlie Rooney(14), Ian King(8) and Russell Humphries(19) take third place with 82 points. Paul Dalby(3), Phil Vokes(2), Barney Ross(3) and Paul Sherlock(5) were in the fourth match out and their 84 points led the field for most of the afternoon.

Winning today however were the likeable and ever-present low handicap Tytherington team of Andy Stubbens(4), Martin Firth(6), Gareth Lover(7) and their secret weapon -‘dangerous Andy Hockenhull.(19)’ The affable high handicapper usually has plenty of wild shots in his locker. Today he had the round of his life as he rolled in three long birdie putts to secure a resounding victory (and also a resounding Maxitours handicap reduction.) Great golf chaps, very well played indeed.

Many thanks for your support to all who played today and also thanks to Ringway Club Manager Fiona Cornelious and renowned Club Professional Nick Ryan for their valuable help and expertise. Yours in Golf, Tim.

Maxitours at World Class Wilmslow

Wilmslow Golf Club gave an incredibly warm and friendly welcome to the full field of Maxitours players who enjoyed this great course today. Manager Keith Melia and all his staff were really professional and excellent to deal with.

In sharp contrast to Jim Rymer’s golf sweater the greens were carefully ironed this morning to produce a fast running excellent surface. The bacon sandwiches were also first class. ‘The bacon in these baps is crisp and tender and the bread is so fresh my plump mate Dave Antrobus will be gutted when I tell him what he’s missed –he would be in heaven’ said food connoisseur Dave Stanhope.

Charles Herbert(14) is famous for his wayward drives and he can regularly be seen visiting adjoining fairways. Today things were so bad he even lost his trolley playing the 4th hole and had to gallop across three fairways to retrieve it.

Top amateur snooker player Chris Hegarty(8) required an early tee time today as he had a big league match this evening. On the course his white ball rattled in the jaws a few times as he struggled to find his recent good form and he had to settle for 35th position.

In today’s event their were strong performances by loaded Al Demmy(11) and even more loaded Pat Keenan(17) from Bramall with 40 points, Brian Greenbank(5) and Dave Wainwright(12) from Hale Golf Club who scored 41 points and Order of merit leader Paul Dalby(3) and Barney Ross(3) from Didsbury with 42 points.

Mick Mahon, Frank Hindle, Keith Fitzhenry and Richard Palmer were in an unusually positive frame of mind before play after a financially successful trip to Cheltenham races last week. Unfortunately it was Keith and Dickie’s golf balls which had no trouble flying over the fences today and they crossed the line five lengths short. Mick(22)and Frank(14) usually fall at the first hurdle but today they upset the odds as they finished a season best third position with 42 points.

Maxitours is fortunate enough to have a handful of players from the Wirral and Southport areas who regularly play and Woolton Golf Club’s Chris McCane(12) and John Parkin(9) were even more Chirpy than usual this morning. They were really laying on their Liverpudlian accents thick and fast after their footy team scraped a lucky victory against a transitional United side yesterday. They were even more delighted to record a second place Maxitours finish with a wonderful 44 points

To rub some more salt into Mancunian wounds today’s winners were from Royal LIVERPOOL-aaagh!. Auctioneer Geoff Guest (7) has a wonderful touch for a big guy, and he teamed up with Estate Agent Paul Lea(18) who has a terrible touch for a small guy. Towards the end of the round they realised they had a good score and things started getting a little tense. They could be heard across the course frantically telling each other to ‘calm down, calm down’. A strong finish saw fighting pars on the last four holes to earn a them a first Maxitours victory. ‘The tide has turned’ the happy scousers declared as they handed their card in.

Many thanks to all who played today. Everyone was very complimentary about the condition of the golf course.
