Maxitours at Prestbury Golf Club

Thick fog greeted the early starters at one of Cheshire’s finest courses- Prestbury Golf Club- today. There were the usual witty one liners flying around the Clubhouse ‘I usually play better when I can’t see the ball’ ‘I played great until the fog cleared and I could see where I was going.’

Top investigators Gerry John and John Brazier from the Greater Manchester Serious crime squad enjoyed the mysterious conditions and they notched up 41 points for a top ten finish. This was one they allowed to get away however as after a great start they were left puzzled to pick up just one point on the simple 14th and were scratching their heads after scoring no points on the 15th hole.

As the fog started to clear the first thing that became visible for many players was Bobby Aston’s horrific bright cerise sweater. ‘It’s me lucky top’ claimed the colour blind scratch 50 year old from Staffordshire. Bob teamed up with heart of gold social worker Paul Hodgson(13) to finish in 6th place on 41 points.

Pancake loving Dave Blood(10) continued his recent surprisingly good form and playing alongside his more talented close friend Andy Sandham(6) he crept into fifth place due to an excellent back nine.

Gifted Aiden Hoosen(1) and Paul Wrigley(5) from North Manchester took fourth place on 42 points. Retired boxer John Aikenhead(15) and his heavy weight pal Mike Lynch(10) finished in 3rd place also on 42 points despite scoring just one point on four holes on their back nine. Aikenhead once again delivered the knock out blow with a four point birdie on the 16th hole.

It was great to see Darren Whittaker(14) back near the top of the leader board where he belongs, after a very average front nine the friendly fireman ignited on the back nine and he incredibly birdied the 10th, 11th, 14th and 15th holes to score 43 points and take second place partnering an awe-struck Ian King(8).

Todays honours went to jumbo jet pilot Paul Kuiper(10) and Tony Doidge(10) from Werneth Golf Club. A holed third shot by Doidge on the par five 11th hole landed 4 points as did his first class birdie on the 16th hole. The Oldham pair flew away with today’s top prize and an impressive three shot winning margin. Great play chaps.

Barney Ross(3) had three twos on the back nine, he birdied the short tenth and seventeenth holes in addition to holing his approach shot on the par 4 sixteenth. The rest of his round was desperate.

Many thanks to all players for your support today, a few early morning players willingly started in the foggy conditions to ensure all Maxitours players finished their round and your selflessness was really appreciated. Thank you very much. Yours in Golf, Tim

Maxitours at Dunham Forest Golf and Country Club

Dunham Forest was the beautiful setting for today’s Maxitours event. The catering and golf course were first class as always. As fresh faced young Assistants playing in our match play event at Dunham in the early 90’s we were always in awe of former European Tour player and highly respected Dunham Head Professional Ian Wrigley. I will always aspire to one day do my job with the same integrity and class he has shown in over 40 years as one of the top club professionals in the country. Today he once again made us all feel very welcome.

Frank Hindle from Burnley surprised a lot of people (including himself) when he became the only player in today’s field to record two birdies on the par threes. He celebrated by ordering a portion of chips and two scones on completion of his round. ‘It’s a Northern delicacy!’ he explained chewing on a raisin.

An unnamed Maxitours player walked into the Dunham FOREST Clubhouse after his round scratching his head ‘my wife played round here last year and I’m sure she told me there weren’t many trees’.

In today’s event the early starters made the most of the smooth freshly ironed greens.
Dave Stanhope’s wealthy team had a wonderful start. ‘We were playing that well even Phil Smeathers had a couple of birdies!’ said likeable Londoner Dave Harlow. Unfortunately after collecting 45 points on the front nine several dropped shots on the closing holes saw them have a Rory ‘McIlroyesque’ style finish. They were disappointed to return to their mansions on the Mere with just a pair of socks each to show for their efforts.

Brian Greenbank(5) has been playing some great golf in recent weeks and today he played with fellow Hale members Al Kenny(10), David Wainwright(15) and to add a little steel he drafted in rival Knutsford member Nigel Jenkins(15). The team gelled beautifully and Jenkins classy par on the tough 17th hole sealed a career best third place for the charismatic quartet with 84 points.

Second place went to the Chorlton cum Hardy team of Graham Brownhill(10), Paul Bennett(11) and husband and wife Chris(8) and Gail Hegarty(12). A terrific effort from all four players helped them achieve 84 points with a solid back nine to take second place.

This has been one of the greatest weeks in Dave Blood’s (11) life. The tubby ex policeman has a passion for golf and pancakes. This week he topped off a healthy serving of his lemon and sugar flavoured favourites on Tuesday with his first Maxitours victory in over a year today. Electrician Mike Grainger(3)was the star of the show with six birdies to spark his team into life. Gutsy Jim Cox(3) and pale faced Ian Gibson(5) completed the successful Denton team. Great golf chaps, very well played.
