Maxitours at rainy (but beautiful) Romiley
Romiley Golf Club kindly hosted its second ever Maxitours event.
This Classic Cheshire parkland course provides a really enjoyable test for all levels of golfer and is set to become a firm favourite with our players. The greens were immaculate and the tree lined fairways were a real pleasure to play from
Thanks to all the green staff for presenting the course to such a high standard.
The new caterers were also superb and the cheese and onion toasties were ‘off the scale’.
This is Officially the friendliest club on the Maxitours circuit. Current Captain (and Maxitours regular) Dave Blood came down to the Club to wish us well, as did two former Presidents and The Head of Greens Duncan Challen. Duncan is a top man and a real driving force behind Romileys’ resurgence as one of the top clubs in Manchester. There were also lots of old friendly members wandering around chatting to anyone who would listen- brilliant.
Richard Palmer enjoys this course and he won last year with a victory which surprised many people. ‘Have they planted lots of mature trees in the past twelve months – I’m sure that there weren’t this many last year!’ Yes there were.
The usually punctual Phil Robinson was running slightly late for his tee time and he came up with a new excuse. ‘The traffic was terrible in Congleton. Is Donald Trump going there today?’ No.
Players registered in the dining room before their round this morning but I had to move my desk into the main bar upstairs as a Slimming World meeting was taking place there at 5pm. Five handicap player John Delaney wandered into the meeting by mistake and the eyes of the lady running the classes lit up. She knows a profitable long term project when she sees one. John did a quick about turn and calmed himself down in the bar with the aid of a 400 calorie San Miguel.
In todays event Mark Hollands mishit earned him nearest the pin on the 15th and John Delaney knocked it to two feet to win nearest the pin in two on the eighteenth.
Neale Laurents’ talented Brookdale team surprisingly took 4th place with just 78 points.
Third place went to Sandiways Gary Neiles(6), Joe Yates(15) John Longworth(13) and Alan Forber(16) with 80 points and Ashton in Makerfields’ Mark Holland(7) his son Matt(14) and Dave Lee(20) and Adie Price(13) took second place with 82 points. Both these teams played in the rain this afternoon- well played chaps.
Earning a win after over fifty barren weeks was the likeable Bramhall team of Simon Hemsley(11) Ian King(8) Darren Whittaker(14)and Neil Worthington(18). They made the most of the dry. still conditions and rolled in more than their fair share of putts on the superb Romiley greens . Great score guys, keep up the excellent play.
Thanks to ALL TEAMS who turned up despite the far from promising forecast not a single team cancelled which is a testament to your class..
Yours in Golf, Tim
