Maxitours at North Manchester

North Manchester was the lovely venue for todays Maxitours event. The golf course is in the top three best courses in Manchester, everyone loved it out there in the June sunshine.

‘A brilliant course! – Make sure it’s on the rota next year!’ Declared intelligent Chris Walley.

‘The greens were lovely – it was in great condition.’ Praised Dave Greenwood.

‘Superb Greens!’ Reported one putting Jez Allan.

It was always a huge argument in Manchester as to which is the better course – North Manchester or Hopwood. In recent years Hopwood had moved above its less wealthy neighbour but with a new clubhouse which should be in operation in July next year and a golf course of this quality the heated arguments will soon start again.

The course site was chosen by James Braid and Townley designed the layout. There are ponds, reservoirs and undulating holes which make playing here really challenging but great fun. The tree lined fairways are getting tighter by the day. 23,000 trees were planted in 1983 and they are all maturing nicely. Paul Manning thinks he hit most of them during his round.

Tony Evans is going home in a good mood. He has played in nearly 100 Maxitours events and to my knowledge he has never played well. Today the likeable 70 year old had 6 net birdies.

‘I am in shock.’ Reported his son and team mate Paul.

‘I’ve never seen him play as well.’

The team were delighted to hit the 80 point barrier.

Scoring was excellent as players made the most of the beautifully smooth greens and ideal conditions.

Tytheringtons John Croxford, Paul Calnan, Andy Heywood and Andy Lever were delighted with 85 points to take 32rd place.

This was bettered in some style by Prestburys Geoff Bickerton, Mark Richardson, Austin McBride and Frazer Scott with a stunning 90 points.

Two handicap Richardson gets hot every now and then and he rolled in 4 back to back birdies from the 12th .

Don Campbell (7) was a Cheshire senior player 6/7 years ago but a few health issues have seen the dour but lovable Scot play below his best in recent times. Today he rolled back the years starting with three gross birdies in the tough opening four holes. He added four more for a career best 7 in total! Steve Austin, Andy Hamlett and Richard Blackwell all chipped in to record 91 points.
