Maxitours at excellent Ringway

The thermometer was showing double digits and the cold wind stopped whistling for once as a great day was enjoyed by all at Ringway Golf Club.

The incredibly well draining course was in excellent condition- thanks to the Head Green keeper and his hard working team for their superb preparation. There were also some great clubhouse improvements taking place under the careful watch of impressive new General Manager Tracy Rawlinson.
The short game practice area was also looking a treat as Ringway just keeps getting better and better.

As well as plenty of daffodils on the course there were other definite signs that Spring is in the air:
Maxitours regular player and Sheep farmer Richard Palmer was missing to oversee the birth of his pedigree lambs.
Chunky Chris Adams was looking excited after cleaning his barbeque at the weekend.
John Hunt was seen getting his lawn mower out of the shed- he needed it today after visiting the deep rough on several occasions.

Roy Ainsworth was hanging around the check-in desk all morning and he told me three times that he is playing at Vale Royal next week and it will be his birthday that day. I think he wants a free game.
No chance.

I was caught in a rush hour queue this morning near the entrance to Ringway Golf Club when I looked to my right only to see Simon Wilkinson looking suspicious coming out of the local Chemist shop. I’m not sure what he bought but he only just missed out on the prizes.

Each week low handicapper Paul Fells’ team never take enough club and it drives him mad. ‘They were playing in the ‘Leave it Short Masters’ once again today.’ complained the Wrexham man ‘Will they ever learn?’

In today’s event Mick Mahon returned to action after he had a few winners when he went to Cheltenham last week, his luck was out today though as he could only manage 14th place.

Denton’s Dave Blood’s(7) swing was flowing nicely but it was Gary Bennell(12) who
picked up seven shots for the team today. Jim Cox(3) and Tony Walsh(6) all played well to secure 3rd place with 86 points.

Phil Vokes(3), Barney Ross(2), Paul Dalby(3) and police sergeant Rob Anderson(6) took second place also with 86 points. Rob had been on a tense night shift in Warrington town centre all night so any three foot putts were a piece of cake in comparison for the wealthy copper.

Taking first place was the new landlord of the Rose and Crown pub in Knutsford- John Newton(12) and his High Legh team. David Lea(14) and Mike Baker (19) did most of the work and Joe Lauder(5) played great when it counts -towards the end of his round – Well played chaps great win.

Thanks for everyone for your 100% attendance once again- brilliant.

Yours in Golf, Tim

Stockport off- sorry!

Dear Maxitours player,

Todays event has been cancelled as with temperatures not rising at all the snow will not disappear sufficiently.

We are trying to rearrange the fixture for a later date and will have more details at 9.30

Sorry for any inconvenience,
See most of you on Thursday, Tim

Stockport now 12pm Shotgun start

Dear Maxitours player,

Just a reminder that there are only two days until the official first day of Spring.

Stockport have had a little snow but after speaking to Professional Gary Norcott he thinks there is very good chance it will clear tomorrow morning.

The event will now be a 12pm shotgun -please let me know if you are unable to play

I will also update my website at 9.30am as we will have a clearer picture of the situation in case of any overnight snow.

We will be on proper greens and tees but there is a good chance the 90 degree rule may apply as fairways will be wet.

Thanks for your patience,

Tim

Maxitours at delightful Dunham Forest

The best golfing day of the year so far greeted over one hundred Maxitours players at Dunham Forest Golf Club.

The huge ancient oak trees had easily soaked up any overnight rain and the course was playing extremely well. Even the sun came out to play in the middle of the day.
Chorley Golf Clubs’ Simon Taylor enjoyed the Cheshire climate ‘It’s like playing on the Mediterranean here compared to the frozen North where we’ve just come from.’ Said the Lancastrian.

‘That course was superb for any the time of the year, never mind March’ said Andy Sandham

‘Those greens were really fast, and so true!’ Observed Barney Ross. ‘Brilliant’ He added.

Thanks to Head Pro Paul Dennis, all the excellent greens staff and Clubhouse staff for your five star service- this is a terrific venue.

Chris Grange(22) is a great bloke but after spending this Winter looking at you tube videos he has got a few new swing thoughts. ‘I’m thinking of five things to do on my backswing but I’m only working on three positions on the downswing so it’s getting there’. Good luck this year Chris but if you want my advice I think you need to concentrate on your follow through, and remember, try not to forget about your transition either.

I went on the golf course late in the day to pick up the Nearest the Pin markers and I didn’t realise what an intelligent golfer Tony Evans was. On the 10th hole I saw his team mates hit drives well over 200 yards to leave tricky wedge shots off a tightly cut fairway. Tony decided to top his driver just 50 yards in order to have a full second shot. Good thinking Tony.

In today’s event scoring was always going to be good on the shortened course and excellent putting surfaces. Mike Savage’s ball disappeared into the hole like a homesick mole and he was surprised and delighted to score four points for his team on the first hole. Mike should have gone home himself as he never appeared on the card again for the rest of the round.

Accrington’s Trevor Foster (+1) has not swung a club for two months but he guided his team into 3rd place with 88 points. Charismatic Adam Thompson(11) Matt Mortimer(13) and Pete Houston (13) all contributed well.

Ex Fire Officer Phil Mayers(10) extinguished any doubts about the quality of his golf with a personal best SIX gross birdies as his team finished in second place with 90 points. ‘That’s the best round of my life!’ said the likeable Lancastrian. Anthony Wilson(11) and Pete Ledger(17) also played great golf. Dale Beaghan(11) marked the scorecard.

After last weeks’ International Womens Day we had our first female winner for nearly a year when Dr Alison Shipston (15) helped her High Legh team take the honours. Five pars on her front nine got the team going. John Hunt(18), James Shipston(10) and James Brown(14) completed the team. I asked James Brown if he enjoyed winning today:
‘I feel good, I knew that I would’. He replied

Thanks so much to everyone for your support and 100% attendance. I hope you enjoyed your golf, Tim
