Carden Park 2012.

74 People enjoyed fantastic Carden Park this weekend. Superb weather, golf courses, hotel and company made the trip a real success.

Day 1 saw Bob and Jeff Francis take the lead with 45 points. The previous week playing at their home course they lost a vital club knockout match, Jeff broke his driver over his knee and Bob lost his putter after hurling it in the lake beside Shrigley Halls 18th green. After trawling the internet for an inflatable putter and unsnappable driver the two likeable characters returned to form in style today. Late in the day Jenny Kehoe and Moira Forster proved popular winners after a tremendous back nine saw them win the card play off.

The Olympics over the past two weeks has been a real success and the country has really enjoyed watching many unusual sports we wouldn’t normally take an interest in. I don’t know what Olympic sport Colin Walton was playing today but it certainly didn’t look like golf to me.

Congratulations to Niall Lynch who recorded a superb hole in one on the 3rd hole, he generously provided each table with a bottle of wine to enjoy with teir meal.

Day 2 saw some bleary eyed golf and the Shrigley Hall team of Brian Hopkins, Alan Pengelly, Niall Lynch and Darren Whittaker fought off their hangovers to record a solid 83 points to win the Am Am.

Results from superb Prestbury

Maxitours at superb Prestbury results

A glorious August day greeted the full field of Maxitours competitors at immaculate Prestbury Golf Club today.

The little wealthy village of Prestbury is home to Stockbrokers, footballers, top lawyers and other over-paid professionals. Even the lost property section at the club has a terrific array of clothing and is well worth a visit. Dave Harlow had his eye on a couple of garments which would easily upgrade his current wardrobe.

Eddie Ellis and todays sponsors JP & Brimelow kindly provided every player with a terrific goody bag for me to distribute at todays event. ‘here are your goody bags and there is a bacon sandwich for each player also’. Mike Spencer spent a couple of minutes searching before complaining ‘theres no bap in my bag’.

Tour regular Andy Stubbens today celebrated his 40th birthday by rolling in a two on the signature 17th hole, well played old man.

Liam Harrison was mentally scarred two years ago in a Maxitour event at Prestbury when his partner three putted the last hole to lose by a shot. Today his partner Paul Bennett was on the 18th fringe in two and receiving a shot. Four shots later the ball eventually found the hole, Harrison was devastated ‘He’s absolutely hopeless, I don’t know why I play with him every week, its doing my head in’. Incredibly 42 points was good enough to win today and Harrison can sleep soundly once again.

Andy Taylor and Martin Firth finished in second place also with 42 points and third place went to Matt Spencer and Andy Buckles.

Dave Antrobus showed us what a great character he is and what a terrific game golf is when he penalised himself after his double hit went unnoticed by his playing partners. Antrobus would have taken first place today but knows playing golf in the true spirit of the game is the real sign of a man.

Delightful Davenport and Prestbury start times.

Maxitours at Delightful Davenport

A large field of nearly 100 Maxitours competitors shrugged off their trench foot problems and enjoyed today’s Mediterranean heat.
Picturesque Davenport Golf Club was presented in tremendous condition. Many thanks to the Club for the terrific hospitality they showed to us throughout the day.

Top professional Adam Scott narrowly missed out on winning the Claret jug this week, his caddy Steve Williams is currently taking most of the blame. This is only to be expected, ask any professional golfer about their bad shots “If I hit it long or short it’s my caddies fault, if it goes right or left it’s my coaches fault.”

Phil Smeathers had his first golf outing since returning from a relaxing holiday in the South of France. He turned up unshaven, wearing a pair of old shorts and with his buttons undone on his golf shirt ‘he looks like he’s popping out to get a baguette’ remarked playing partner Dave Harlow.

Lewis Marland enjoyed a free meal after play today. Bob Kwan treated his team to four pints of lager and four bags of crisps on completion of his round. As he carefully delivered the drinks to his friends on the outside patio Lewis Marland started helping himself to the ‘complimentary’ crisps on the counter. ‘Those free nibbles were a nice touch’ he said to his best mate Alf. Bob walked past looking confused, carrying three full bowls of crisps and a half empty one.

Geoff Haynes normally plays average golf and then has a quiet pint in the corner of the clubhouse. Today Geoff spent all afternoon pestering the tournament organiser ‘am I still in the lead?’ after an excellent 44 points saw him at the top of the early scoreboard.

With only one day to go before the Olympics begins, today’s tournament saw a gold medal display by Mottram Halls Bob Kwan and Steve Burke. After dropping shots on the 1st and 4th holes the charismatic duo picked up momentum and scored 24 points on the back stretch to take top spot.

Silver medal was won by Phil Howsley (Disley) and Mike Worrall (Didsbury) with 23 points on their back nine. Pete Moores and Moby Rawthore finished in bronze and Seamus Keegan and Frank Garvey were 5th, also on a very creditable 44 points.
