Results from fantastic Fairhaven

Fairhaven hosted its first ever Maxitours event today and after experiencing the course everyone agreed that it was a superb new venue to have on the rota.

Fast running fairways and the sand based greens were a real pleasure to play on and everyone at this historic Club made us feel very welcome indeed.
The course was fabled to have 365 bunkers but actually has only 118, 23 of which were closely inspected by Dave Keen during the course of his interesting round today.

In 1968 The Club professional Bill Miller befriended a couple of wild pheasants which were living close to his pro shop. He became so attatched to the stunning birds he actually included one on a new club logo. Steve Latchfords golf ball nearly became attatched to a pheasant as he hit his ball in the deep rough on the 16th hole but the bird managed to escape to the safety of the centre of the fairway.

Regular player and nice guy Richard Palmer travels over 80 miles most weeks to play bad golf on Maxitours. Today the Blackburnian was looking forward to a relaxing breakfast after the short hop down the M55 to Blackpool. Unfortunately his partner John Farnworth has a reputation for errant driving on and off the course and they both failed to see the Blackpool turn off. A two hour detour which involved a look around the historic Lancaster town centre saw the likeable duo still chewing on their bacon sandwiches as they hurried onto the course.

In today’s event the lovely conditions and full field meant scoring was excellent.

Royal Mail employee Martin France delivered the goods on the front nine and he played alongside Pete Atherton to score 44 points to take 6th. Cheadle’s Mick Fenton and Andy Hall also had 44 points but their poor back nine meant they could only manage 5th spot.

Steve McDermott returned yesterday afternoon from a pro am at Vilasol. When he got home the first thing he did was put his clubs on the naughty step as they had misbehaved in the Portuguese heat. Today with not an overhanging pine tree in sight Steve relaxed and played great golf to finish 4th alongside Simon Lewis from Ashton. As well as finishing fourth a delighted Steve also won nearest the pin and rolled his putt in to collect in the 2’s sweep.

Dave Torkington and Steve Berrell from Swinton Park had the best back nine of the teams tied on 44 points and they were delighted with a season best 3rd place finish.

Shrigley Halls Brian Hopkins and Barry Horrox have been quiet all season however today they played superbly to finish second. Both these lovely guys have a real passion for the game and Brian was quite rightly delighted with his 5 birdies on the championship course.

First place went to Tytherington’s Martin ‘my handicap is too low to win anything’ Firth and Andy ‘can I have a shot back’ Stubbens. This was their first win together and they both contributed well with some wonderful golf. Well played chaps!

Many thanks to all players who travelled to the Fylde coast today, once again every single player turned up which is tremendous. I really hope you enjoyed your day at the seaside. Thank you.
Yours in Golf, Tim.

Maxitours at Sunny Conwy

Over 40 wise golfers made the smart decision to travel to Conwy today. Many thanks to Club Manager Chris Chance for hosting us at late notice.
The weather really was unbelievable compared to the arctic conditions in Manchester. Sweaters and even shirts were the order of the day as the firm fairways and high quality greens saw some excellent golf. Everyone was ecstatic in the Clubhouse after play.

‘I was actually too hot’ complained Lancastrian Rob Hands.

‘It was absolutely fantastic out there’ commented Simon Hemsley

‘What can you say? It was Summer golf’ said Russel l Humphries

‘It was beautiful’ reported Iain Perkins ‘I think the clocks have gone forward already in Wales’

‘I was hopeless’ said Carl Watterson.

Chunky Roy Ainsworth(25) was annoyed with old his pal Brian Ankers (15)today. ‘We could have won it today but Brian’s putting was off, more importantly he also forgot the Kit Kats.’ The Lymm team also had rising stars like Peter Heald(9) and Mike Verdon(15) playing and they finished in 2nd spot today.

Taking first prize was the Wigan team of Firemen Phil Dermott(6), Mark Riley(5), Andrew Peete(13) and Geoff Parsley(14). These lads are expert Strikers and they can also hit the ball well. Dermott’s birdie on the 11th was the highlight of his round. Great golf chaps!

Many thanks to everyone for travelling to Wales and playing today, I really hope you enjoyed your golf.
Tim.

Dear Maxitours player,

I have spoken to officials at the Club and unfortunately due to the 2 inches of overnight snow, we have decided it is almost certain that Wilmslow will be unplayable tomorrow.

After a few telephone calls the event has been moved to Conwy Golf Club. However, tee times are slightly limited and I must therefore allocate teams on a first to confirm by email/text- first served basis. I had 23 teams of four due to play at Wilmslow and room for just 18 at Conwy.

The following times are available.
Please confirm by email/text if you wish to play and your preferred start time.
