Maxitours at remarkable Ringway
It was a gloomy day in Manchester however the condition of superb Ringway golf course lifted everyone’s spirits. The terrific layout is always a real pleasure to play and there were plenty of positive comments from Maxitours players as they finished their rounds.
Thanks to all the staff at this superb Club for your hospitality. Secretary Fiona Cornelius is great to work and with her new haircut she is now ranked in the top three most attractive Club secretaries in the North West.
Seventy year old Roy Ainsworth checked in with new partner Keith Edwards. ‘He’s a ringer!’ Roy announced. ‘Is he very handy off his handicap?’ I enquired ‘No, he can’t hit a barn door with a banjo. He’s ‘s just been ringing out his socks in the car park- he played in the rain last night.’
Frank Hindle could be getting the Joe Hart feeling in the next couple of weeks. He thinks his place in his fourball is totally secure. Team manager Mick Mahon has other ideas and after today’s performance he is desperately looking for a decent new partner. Frank could soon be out on a free transfer.
Bernard Hessian’s team finished in last place but they were unfazed by their poor performance and even asked for a tee time at Vale Royal in a few weeks time. I informed them that I only had 3pm available and that there is a good chance they will be playing in the dark. After a quick chat with his team Bernard came back to the table and asked ‘Have you got anything later ?We might give that playing in the dark a try- we might do better. ‘
The early starters had the best of the weather before a heavy hour-long downpour toughened up the course.
Colin Roberts is a top man and he was out first. It was great to see him back playing some excellent golf as he helped his Alsager team to an impressive 82points. That score was matched by the lovely Spencer family from Bramall and also premiership Referee Mike Dean’s team from Aldersley Green.
Jim Caldwell’s Wilmslow team finished in 4th with 83 points and were narrowly beaten into 3rd by Sale’s Simon Poucher(15), Brendan Leighton(16), Vic Nillson(13) and Jan Jagielka(14).
Iain Bartholomew’s(4) team could only manage three points on the easy first hole however with the very positive Richard Blackwell(13) in the team anything is possible. An excellent back nine saw them record 85 points and take 2nd place. John Hilditch(11) and Tony Jennison(5) completed the quartet.
Roy Ainsworth(26) from Lymm is having a hip operation in mid September and is trying to get in as much golf as possible before a six month lay-off. He signed off in style as his senior Lymm team gelled tremendously to secure a memorable win with 86 points. Brian Ankers(16), Mike Verdon(15) and Keith Edwards(19) were the other team members -well played chaps!
Thanks to everyone for your terrific support today, yours in golf, Tim

Maxitours at superb Sandiway
Maxitours made the short journey from sunny Stockport into deepest Cheshire for the second round of the Summer Classic at Sandiway. Glorious weather and an even more glorious golf course meant there were plenty of happy golfers drinking San Miguel on the veranda after play.
Thanks to all the staff at this first class five star golf venue for your superb hospitality and thanks to highly rated General Manager Anthony Roberts who runs a very tight ship.
After the round there were plenty of comments:
‘Terrific day ‘ beamed John Dickenson
‘That was brilliant – what a course’ chirped Mike Gauden
‘I love it here’ crooned Dave Stanhope.
‘I’m giving this game up’ muttered Steve Parle.
There were a record three Maxitours golfers who turned up this morning wearing work clothes in an attempt to deceive their better halves. ‘My wife’s at home looking after our three kids – it’s the Summer holidays and she is slowly losing it.’ chuckled one unnamed player. ‘ There was absolutely no way I would be granted a pass’.
Terry Harper told me that he was playing in his last event of the year before he sets off on a two month cruise with his wife. Unfortunately for Mrs Harper things aren’t as glamorous as they may at first appear. After further questioning Terry revealed that he has got a barge and is looking forward to exploring the many delightful waterways that Birmingham has to offer…I don’t want to interfere but I think Mrs Harper may prefer the Caribbean Terry.
The likeable Grange Park low handicap team of Ray Tennant(5), Leigh Smart(1), Billy Rawsthore(6) and Andy Jackson(5) set the early pace with an excellent 86 points. Ray is famous for splitting fairways with his Taylor Made Driver – ‘I bet you drive in the middle lane of the motorway’ chuckled one of his partners in the bar after play.
Seventy year old Ray Ward(16) from Hindley Hall teamed up with Forest of Arden’s Damien Jakes (7)and father and son Jordan(5) and Gary Garner(6) to take first place with 87 points,. Despite dropping a shot on the 17th hole they managed to hold on to take their first win of the season, Well played chaps.
Thr 36 hole event was incredibly close with the top four teams scoring 165 over the two days! A strong showing by the Garry Smith Blakely team on the final day when they scored 85 points saw them take first place on a card play-off- Congratulations!
Mick Mahon’s Mytton Fold team took second, Ian Kings Bramall team finished third and Dave Bowers team were 4th.
Many thanks to Carus Green resort for their sponsorship, I am staying at this great venue in Kendal with my family for a couple of days next week. The accommodation is brilliant and the course is a real pleasure to play. I recommended it to Roy Ainsworth last year and he went in May and is going again in September. ‘ its absolutely brilliant’ said his pal Brian Ankers from Lymm Golf Club.
Thank you for your support these last two days, I hope you enjoyed your golf as much as I enjoyed running the event. I am having website issues which I hope to resolve tomorrow- sorry for any inconvenience!
Yours in Golf,
Tim

Maxitours at Sun Kissed Stockport
Stockport is right up there with Cheshire’s finest. The terrific weather and stunning layout meant an enjoyable day was had by all. Thanks to everyone at this friendly Club for your hospitality, it was also a nice touch when the President popped in to wish us well. Newly married top pro Gary Norcott and Jayne Scowther are also great to deal with -brilliant.
The country is buzzing after some terrific performances at the Olympics in Rio. Yesterday was perhaps the most successful day in British Olympic history and it was capped off when South African golfer Justin Rose won a terrific gold for Team GB.
It is the turn of the talented Brownlee brothers to set off in their quest for Olympic gold tomorrow in the Triathlon. Let’s all hope and pray that they fair better than the untalented Brownhill brothers (Graham and Malc) from Chorlton cum Hardy Golf Club who could only manage 22nd place with 72 points .
Bernard Hessian’s team also had a bad day, he even tried to throw the scorecard in the bin, but it missed.
Mick Mahon tees off at 10am on the dot with his Lancashire based team each week. After play they always have a quick pint and a long inquest to work out why they played so badly before departing for the North at 2.30pm looking miserable. Today at 3pm I was surprised to see them heading for the Clubhouse door looking happier than usual. I then remembered they had asked for a late start time and were actually heading for the first tee. ‘We are just delaying the inevitable’ said dour team mate Richard Palmer. They actually played well today and lie in 7th place before tomorrow.
There were 4 teams tying for third place on 84 points and all of them scored heavily on the back nine. Dave Bowers team took 3rd spot after collecting 46 points on the closing holes.
Well known Cheltenham winning jump- jockeys Sean Quinlan (24) and Alan O’Keefe (14) joined wealthy horse owner Alan Baxter (7) and Matt Barratt(14)from Mere Golf Club. They all played great to finish in 2nd place with 86 points. I am not a big gambling man but Alan was feeding his lads up with bacon baguette and chips before they went out and they certainly weren’t drinking orange juice in the bar after play. I won’t be backing one of his horses for a couple of weeks.
The Prestbury team of Chris Adams(13), Charlie Cunningham(13), Andy Oakes(7) and Simon Golsby(6) took first place with an impressive 87 points. Ex-Club Captain Charlie was the star man as he picked up seven shots for his team. ‘Are you still also a member at Royal Lytham as well as Prestbury? ‘ I asked him after the round. ‘Yes and I have just joined Royal Dornoch as well!’ Nobody likes a show off Charlie.
Well played chaps great score.
There are prizes for top 3 teams each day and top 3 overall – but teams can only win 1 prize! Full results printed tomorrow!
