Srixon Mastes Results from Hopwood Golf Club

Results from the fabulous Hopwood Srixon Masters

Manchester (Hopwood) Golf Club keeps getting better and better. The course is back to its very best and can certainly lay claim to be one of the elite venues in Manchester. All my Maxitours players really enjoyed their day. Thanks to everyone at the Club especially steward Steve who puts some hours in. He met me at 8.30am this morning and was still working hard when I left the course at 7.30pm this evening- many thanks Steve

Lots of Maxitours players were convinced that I have spent all afternoon enjoying myself relaxing and watching the Open golf on the huge Hopwood flat screen tv. This is not the case as I found time to have some lunch when the adverts came on.

John Farnsworth is really suffering due to this years drought. He normally has about 40 cigarettes a round but most courses now have smoking bans.
‘He is a nervous wreck by the time he finishes his round, his golf has really gone downhill.’ informed playing partner Richard Palmer. ‘On the 18th green he was starting to froth at the mouth like a rabid dog.’

Abba loving John Linsky was having a great day. He played better than his normal rubbish at Manchester Golf Club and is now looking forward to watching the new Mama Mia movie which was released today. His team weren’t so positive.
‘We’re thinking about dropping you John- your not good enough and as you know ‘The winner takes it all.’
‘Take a chance on me!’ he begged
‘Knowing me, knowing you’ your golf is too bad sorry.’
‘ I’ll give you some Money, money, money. If you let me play next week.’ he pleaded.

Kieth Rigby looks quite intelligent but this is misleading. He caused a few chuckles in the clubhouse when he walked in and asked loudly ‘Is Kevin Costner is leading the Open?’

Erik Van Roohan was lying 2nd after the first day at Carmnoustie and the Sky golf commentator reported that has size 14 feet.
‘I have the same size golf shoes as him!’ said Frank Gallows proudly. Unfortunately, that is the only golfing similarity between 22 handicapper Frank and the highly talented Van Rooyan.

Taking third place in today’s event was seventy plus year old Dave Harlow and his wealthy team who all live next to the Mere. Dave’s golf is maturing with age like a fine wine and the 17 handicapper had a run of six pars in the middle of his round. Lovely guys Phil Smeathers(6) Dave Stanhope(11) and Les Penson(14) completed the millionaire quartet.

In second place were the Macclesfield lads. My old science teacher Neil Drummond(13) captained the team of Daniel Dunn(6) Callum Cook(20) and Pat O’Dowd(17). ‘We had great chemistry out there.’ Reported the physics graduate.

Winning was Les Russons(12) Bramall team. Their winning drought has been compared to the Summer of ’76 but the heavens opened for them on course today as they at last found some form.
Rob Kenyon(17) Chris Mackin(13) and Frank Kaminski(12) were his team mates. Rob Kenyon attributed the success to his two dropped team mates Rob Merricks and Simon Burgess. ‘We wouldn’t have won if they both played so I would like to dedicate this win to those two clowns.’

Thanks to everyone for your terrific support and 100% attendance- legends.

Maxitoirs at luxurious Lancaster

Lancaster Golf Club blew the (ankle length, white) socks off Maxitours players today. The course was in amazing condition and everyone enjoyed this terrific golf course.
Even Frank Hindle couldn’t find a fault with this top venue.
‘Best greens I’ve played on for a few years’ reported Dukinfield’s Mark Turner.

It was not only the greens which were getting praised as the fairways and bunkers were also in great condition.
The catering and Clubhouse were also very impressive.
Thanks to everyone at the Club for your hospitality.

Intelligent and thrifty Mike Tarrant uses rechargeable batteries in his Garmin GPS unit as he tells me it works out a lot cheaper in the long run. Unfortunately, the batteries were still at home happily charging on his wall unit when he teed off today at Lancaster. ‘You haven’t got any AA batteries you can lend me have you Tim?’
‘No.’

The history of the Ashton estate where the Golf course sits is fascinating. King James 1 and Charles 11 are both reputed to have stayed in the clubhouse a few hundred years ago. Brian Hopkins has also stayed in the Dormy house here and he says it is very nice.

The first ever St Leger race was supposed to have taken place on the golf course land. Chris Adams Prestbury team certainly weren’t at the races today as they could only manage 34 and 35points between them

Peter Allis includes the Lancaster signature 18th hole in his top ten finishing holes in the World. Rob Parry would agree as his thinned tee shot hit the flag and disappeared into the hole. It wasn’t the only thing to disappear quickly as Rob made a sharp exit for the M6 without buying a drink at the bar. Congratulations Rob.

On his arrival Stewart Taylor was bemused by a huge sign in front of the grand Lancaster Clubhouse warning golfers that the parking of cars and the congregating people is prohibited due to the risk from flying golf balls. The 18th green is over 50 yards away so it would take a very bad shot to endanger life thought Stewart. Four hours later he was screaming ‘fore’ as his badly struck tee shot rattled around the front of the historic Clubhouse.

In todays event scoring was excellent with fast running Lancaster fairways and pure putting surfaces.

Shrigley Hall legend Brian Hopkins(4) rolled in a birdie at the last to take 5th place alongside Mark Taylor(10).

Andy Faulkner(18) repairs telephones on the railway for a living. A one point double bogey at the second would usually signal the start of his game coming right off the tracks. Luckily playing partner Dr Munro Donald(15) held things together and they were delighted to finish in 4th with 44 points.

Worsleys’ Kev Hart(10) and Paul Yearsley(10) recorded a best ever 45 points to take 3rd . Kev is a great character who could never be described as quiet. He was talking even louder than usual about his excellent golf in the bar after play.

Nuclear Submarine builders Mike Hillman(11) and Barrow Golf Club Captain Dave Pratt(9) took 2nd place. After an explosive start they were delighted to see Dave’s ball submerge beneath the hole for a birdie on the 16th .

Richard Palmers(12) game has come together since he dumped his driver last month in favour of a strong three wood.
‘They call me the Henrik Stenson of Mytton Fold at the Club!’ he told me after his round.
‘No they don’t ‘ Corrected his playing partner John Farnsworth(22).
The two lovely men were popular winners- Well played!

Thanks to all who travelled today – it was terrific to have over 120 players and not a single no show-pure Class.

Maxitours at Delightful Davenport

Despite the Sahara Desert –like weather conditions Davenport Golf Club was enjoyed by all Maxitours players today. This picturesque course sits in the foothills of the Pennines and is a great test of golf with narrow fairway and small greens.

The catering is always first class thanks to highly rated clubhouse manager Frazer and his team and we were well looked after once again today.

The Davenport members have a roll up on Thursday mornings and it says a lot about this great club that so many guys came over to have a chat and gave is their best wishes for a terrific days golf – thank you.

Office Manager Elaine has been great to deal with over the last twelve years and we wish her all the best on her retirement in December.

There are fantastic views from the 15th tee across Manchester and the North Pennines. Richard Gough pointed out the faint smudge if smoke emanating from the Saddleworth fire but his team couldn’t quite see where he was looking. Richard then pulled his tee shot wildly out of bounds.

‘I can see the fire now -its directly in line with where your ball landed -in that big bush.’ Chuckled playing partner Phil Kenning.

Mick Mahan thinks England will win the World Cup. The omens are good as the last time we won was when Man City won the league, Burnley qualified for Europe and Chelsea finished 5th in the league.

‘It’s got to be our year -we’re having a heatwave, we’ve got a great side of the draw and Frank Hindle bought a round of drinks.‘ In a strange twist of fate Micks team finished last with a spooky World Cup score of ‘66’ points to keep the football theme running strong.

John Farnsworth has blamed his poor golf on his recent weight loss. ‘I lost 2 pounds last week in that sunshine and its caused my swing to go out of sync!’ Seventeen stone John was back drinking beers after play as he desperately tried to get back to his fighting weight.

In todays event all of the top five teams teed off in the first hour and a half and made the most of the more receptive, cooler, stiller conditions.

Taking the early lead were Maxitours regular nice guys Colin Roberts(19) Dave Marchant(16) Geoff Andrews(20) and Brian White(16) with 81 points .

This was then bettered by Paul Fell (4) Nigel Ashton(13) likeable Scouser (if there is such a thing) Ben Kinsey(5) and Mike Lowe(8) who had a better back nine.

Taking first place was Maxitours ever present and lovely man Lewis Marland (15) with his best pal Alf Shilitoe(18), Neale Laurent(13) and Rick Cotton(9). Shillitoe and Cotton picked up some vital points for the team as they made two birdies at the last to secure a first victory of the year. Well played chaps.

Dr David Arthur found the ‘cure’ for his fade and drilled a six iron close to the flag to win nearest the pin on the 14th. Alan Forber thinned his shot on the 16th to within inches of the hole and Brian Hopkins won longest drive by at least 20 yards, well done.

Thanks to all who played today, your support is appreciated. Tim

Maxitours at truly great Hazel Grove

Hazel Grove was SCORCHIO!
The sun was blazing down on our Maxitours players once again as the Summer of 2018 is becoming one to remember. The head greenkeeper is also on fire as he presented his course in tip top condition for our players today.

Club Professional James Rowlands is possibly the best young golf pro in the country, he is always great to deal with and has a very bright future -thanks James.

It was a really nice touch from Club Captain Iain Cole to meet me on arrival and the terrific Hazel Grove hospitality continued throughout the day. Thanks also to caterer and old friend of mine Martin Swindells and his attractive partner Clare for all their work.

Hazel Grove kindly opened their half way house to keep our guys refreshed. There were a couple of ladies serving who did a great job and they raised well over £200 for Christies- well done everybody.

The cakes were the highlight of the round for many players today including Steve Foxcroft and his upper class team. They enjoyed homemade scones, clotted cream and wild blueberry jam on the 8th tee provided by team mate David Wilkinsons lovely wife Sue. They then followed this up with chocolate cakes from the half way house. It is the first recorded incident of back-to-back cakes in Maxitours history.

Keith Rigby really enjoyed his first visit to Hazel Grove and he obviously likes sitting down a lot and giving directions as he commented on the quality of the course furniture. ‘The benches and signposts are excellent.’ He assured me.

The pin positions were set up for last Sundays’ Captains Day and there was plenty of three putting taking place. Graham Kaye drove the par four 15th hole and ended up requiring a ten footer to save his par-such were the difficulty of the greens.

Big Dave Greenbank says he only drinks water and eats salad at this time of the year as it is too hot. But a heat wave signals the start of meat pie eating season for chunky John Buckley’s team. They all had a big pie each to help them cool off after a tough day on the links.

In today’s event Andy Vietch is having a Yellow patch (the opposite of a purple patch). His team could only finish in 24th place.

Nigel Ashton lives in Saddleworth and he was up all night coughing on the fumes from the nearby moorland fire. He managed to battle through the flames to play at Hazel Grove but his golfing dreams went up in smoke after his team could only manage 72 points.

Hazel Grove member and top lawyer Simon Ashton(9) is intelligent and knows how to pick a team, Mick Jones(6), Duncan Cocker(9) played well but ex Cheshire amateur Andy Hill(scr) had no worse than a par as he recorded two birdies on his way to a gross 69 to help his team take 5th place.

The strange talking Staffordshire team of Tom Butler(9), Sean O’Conner(20). Matt Cheffins(11) and Lee Shenton(5) had a strong finish to take fourth place.

Neil Edwards(8) and his Wrexham men came over the border and nearly returned to Wales with all the spoils they finished in 3rd place with 81 points. Milkman Geoff Ratcliffe(7) was up at 2am this morning and he delivered four birdies as well as nearly 500 bottles of the white stuff. Steve Star(7) and Chris Bland(14) completed the team.

Second place went to Joe Yates(15)’ team. Joe ripped it on the course. Unfortunately it was Joe’s pants not his golf ball which ripped as he picked his ball out of the hole after a par on the tough 14th hole. Sandiways Gary Nieles(6) Paul Yates(9) and Alan Forber(15) completed the team.

Jim Clarke(10) is taking it easy at work and his son Chris (15) is on garden leave. They are down at Knutsford Golf Club practicing most days and this is reflected in an upturn in results. Jim has been useless for the past ten years but is now a match for anyone. Mark Hagerty(15) and Graham Jackson(5) also chipped in well. Great golf guys well played!

Maxitours at very highly rated Romiley

This balmy Summer of Golf continued at Romiley Golf Club today. Thanks to everyone at this lovely venue for making us feel SO welcome.

I finally realised my lifetime ambition to have my own car parking spot at a golf club as Romiley reserved me a prime spot with my name on in big letters. I was also very warmly greeted by a couple of suited members when I arrived (Duncan Challen and Dave Blood) and the greens were hand cut and ironed for our players by the expert greens staff- brilliant.

Romiley Golf Club is now right back amongst the elite Manchester courses and I would highly recommend it as a future Captains away day venue.

‘Wonderful’ said Colin Roberts
‘Brilliant I love that course’ Oozed Barrie Simpson
‘Book it for next year -what a great course!’ Requested Paul Woodbine
‘ It was immaculate’ Said the less than immaculately dressed Bill Heywood.
‘The Greens were so true it was a pleasure to put on them’ Said Neale Laurent

Nigel Davenport ordered a healthy ham salad sandwich on wholemeal bread for his lunch and then followed it up had a new Maxitours record three bowls of chips. This class 4 handicapper is category 1 golfer but when it comes to eating and drinking he plays off scratch.

Jim Clarke has been on top form recently after a couple of impressive wins but he struggled a little bit today and had some bad luck when his slightly wayward drives kept rolling into awkward lies in the rough. He knew it was going to be a long day when he arrived late and had to take his sausage sandwich on the course with him. As he was walking down the first fairway his juicy sausage rolled out of its bap and unfortunately ended up in a sandy divot. After consulting with his team Jim had to declare it inedible and he ordered a provisional.

Phil Robinson has been watching too much World Cup football. He played like Raheem Sterling as he didn’t lose his marker and kept missing simple little tap ins from a couple of feet.

In today’s event it was great to see a husband and wife team in the prizes as lovely Kay (32) and ever so slightly less lovely Simon Conway (8) combined well to take 3rd place with 44 points.

The English football team is a very young vibrant bunch and they could have a bright future. There is nothing young and vibrant about John Farnsworth(22) but the ex- butcher (his wife who ran the butchery actually sacked him for being too miserable to his customers) called upon all his experience to take second place today. Farnsworth has a funny swing and his mates tell me his favourite cuts of meat are ‘chops’ and ‘shanks’ but today he hit some prime cuts to take ‘joint’ 2nd place. Richard Palmer was his surprised partner.

Winning today is the oldest winner for over 5 years as seventy eight year old Bill Parkinson(15) from Shaw Hill and Lake Nona (!) took first place alongside Mark Birtwistle(12). Loaded Bill owns Moorhouses Brewery among other things and he assured me that a pint of bitter tastes a lot better after a great game of golf. Well played chaps great victory on a super course.

Thanks to all players for your support, Yours in Golf, Tim
