Room for 2 or teams of 4 in the Welsh Classic Mon 11th and Tues 12th June Maxitours at beautiful Vale Royal Abbey The tremendous weather continued as Maxitours events headed into a warm and hazy June at Vale Royal. The course is maturing into one of the best in the North West and was once again in brilliant condition for todays’ competition. A great day was had by all at this five star golf course and equally impressive clubhouse. New PGA pro Ben Derbyshire has added a real buzz to the Club and their hard working manager Ian Embury runs a very tight ship indeed. Terry Hines and his cloth capped team came down from Chorley to play Vale Royal for the first time; ‘Eee that were fabulous’ said the likeable Lancastrian ‘’we’ll be back!’ ‘Stunning’ announced David Dean. ‘We all love it here!’ Elliot Crabtree was in the woods a lot today, his ball went in the oaks near the 10th green, hit the Elm on the 15th and went in the Birch trees on the last. Ironically the only native British tree he didn’t hit with his ball today was a Crabtree. Late starter David Dean finished his round and then headed off to Northwich to watch Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown live in concert. ‘The show will seem quite tame compared to some of the language my team were coming out with after their bad shots today!’ Joked the Woodside man as his team finished in 24th spot. Duncan Hesketh has just returned from a golf trip to Florida. He played well for the first two days out there but then he told me his golf suffered as he struggled with a ‘flying right arm’. I told him that he should just grip the club lighter and let his elbow naturally hinge into his right side. He corrected me as his swing was fine. Apparently his right arm kept involuntarily waving at a voluptuous cheerleader driving the refreshment buggy and he couldn’t stop buying drinks from her. Colin Roberts from Alsager has spent tens of thousands of pounds playing golf all over the world in the last six months and he has only just returned from Nice on Tuesday after yet another golfing vacation. The practice seems to be reaping dividends as on form Colin wins a pair of FJ socks for his 5th place. Simon Hemsleys(8) Bramall team picked up 46 points on a terrific back nine effort after collecting a stuttering 37 points on the front nine. Their 83 points was good enough for 4th place. Gareth Bradley (+1), Nigel Hall(8) and Mark Clewley(4) completed the team. Les Russon(13) also from Bramall and his team of senior Macclesfield golfers Paul Carroll(19) Duncan Adshead(20) and Steve Pegg(22) took third place. Smooth swinging Carroll hit a great shot into the16th to win nearest the pin and keep his team ticking along nicely. Despite dropping a shot on their opening hole Wrexhams’ Paul Fell (6) and his cosmopolitan team of Ian Venables(12) Mike Lowe(8) and curly haired likeable scouser Ben Kinsey(4) took 2nd place with 85 points. Ex -army man Fell showed his true grit with a very valuable birdie on the closing hole. Dave Stanhopes’(11) team took 1st prize today after a wonderful 87 points. The Dunham man is learning to fully relax on the golf course and is showing his true colours after he took an impressive one over par 37 shots on the tougher front nine to give his team a great a start. Long suffering team mates Phil Smeathers,(6) Tom Jarvis,(14) and Dave Antrobus(10) looked to be in a state of shock as they are not usually in the winners circle. In fact ‘wild’ Tom Jarvis has never had a top three finish despite ten years of trying. He normally only carries 13 golf clubs in his bag– his 14th club and most used is a strimmer he carries around with him to search for his balls in the long rough. Well played chaps great victory. Maxitours at Brilliant Bramall Park

Wall to wall sunshine greeted Maxitours players at leafy Bramall Park today.

This is a brilliant Golf Course set in the Stockport suburbs. Head pro Craig Daggitt does a great job and he always contacts me before the event to see if he can be of assistance- thanks Craig , top man.

The golf course was superbly presented and as well as a highly skilled greens who were team hand cutting the greens when I arrived this morning there was a party of six volunteer members proudly weeding around the practice green and tidying up the car park for us- which says a lot about this great Club.
The new Clubhouse interior and balcony also look great after recent renovations.

‘That is a Fantastic Maxitours venue! The course was brilliant and the pint of Wainwrights is also spot on!’ Reported well-travelled Sam Leach who knows even more about beer than he does about golf. There were plenty of positive comments throughout the day:

The greens were very firm and true and staying on the putting surface was a problem for the less talented strikers of a golf ball. I told Dave Griffiths about the importance of changing your wedge regularly or at the very least keeping grooves mud free to get some much needed backspin in the bouncy conditions. ‘You mean you are allowed to clean your grooves? Replied Dave.

It’s a very well known fact that Roy Ainsworth(26) has dragged many of his playing partners down to his level over the years. Poor Adam Princep is his latest victim and he has seen his handicap double since joining Roys team at the start of the year. (Luckily it isn’t actually as bad as it sounds as the Warrington man has crept from a 1 to a 2 handicap.) The team finished in 15th place today.

It is great to see that Phil Smeathers(6) was back to his best after his recent illness. He is a lovely bloke who has been great with me over the years, The middle section of the Bramall course is very tough but big Phil destroyed it with eight pars on the bounce as he helped his Knutsford team into 7th place. If you have a spare half hour he will happily talk you through each hole as at least three people in the Bramall bar this afternoon will testify.

Brian Hopkins played with his new set of Titleist AP3 irons and he was excited to be taking the wrappers off some of his clubs in the Clubhouse before play. Brian struck his tee shot within 120 yards of the 1st green and then incredibly holed his virgin wedge. This helped his team take third place on a card play off. Mark Taylor(9) Tim Wrigley(20) and Mike Powell(11) completed the Shrigley team.

Heyrose’ Paul Walton(15) Warrington’s stunning Anne Greenough (6) and Mottrams’ Steve Dobson (28) took 2nd place. County table tennis player Anne is also a class golfer and she impressively made 4’s on the tough 10th and 11th holes to earn her team 6 valuable points. A couple of chip ins on the back nine from Steve also helped the cause.

Earning their first ever victory today were Knutsfords multi millionaire Jim Clarke(12) and his pals Pete Ledger(18) Pete Booth(16) and Graham Jackson(9). Jim has worked hard on his golf this winter and is now reaping the rewards although it was a great team effort from the likeable quartet. Well played chaps!

Maxitours at Pristine Pleasington

Pleasington was in terrific condition for todays Maxitours event. The mature heathland fairways were firm and links-like and the greens were rolling fast and true. When the course is presented like this Pleasington has a very good claim to be the best inland course in Lancashire.

‘I have never seen so many Bluebells and bunkers on a golf course!’ reported Mike Gauden
‘I never saw any bluebells?’ Quizzed Steve his more talented straight hitting playing partner.
‘There were lots of them deep in the trees’ Replied Mike.

Ken Swarbrick went in a Maxitours record 17 bunkers today. He hit 21 bunker shots. Work it out.

Graham Lomas (23 hcap) came to England from Australia’s Gold Coast five years ago. He has piercing blue eyes, is six foot tall and has fair hair- but that is where the similarity with Greg Norman ceases. During his career swashbuckling Norman was nicknamed ‘the great white shark’ after his aggressive golf. Graham is known to his mates as ‘the great white fishfinger’ and he managed just a solitary par all day.

Alf Shillitoe(18) is also widely regarded as a bad golfer. He normally lets his team down each week. Today the roles were reversed and surprised Alf had two four point holes and two three pointers. Despite Alfs’ brave efforts his team struggled to 17th place. ‘Where were you?’ was all he could mutter in the Clubhouse.

Seve sometimes starved himself before he played as he felt it turned him into a finely tuned tiger with heightened senses hunting down its prey. Dave Goddard had two cheese and ham toasties and a couple of pints before he went out. He resembled a python that has just swallowed a cow. Dave eventually digested his meal and got on the team card two and a half hours after he teed off with a lucky putt on the 10th hole.

Scoring wasn’t great despite yellow tees, perfect weather and immaculate greens. Ninety percent of teams scored more points on the easier front nine and I have never heard so many players saying they had thrown away a win.

Two ladies featured in the prizes as Alison Shipstone(15) and Sheena Leonard(14) played great golf to help John Hunt(18) and James Shipstone(10) finish in 3rd place. Hunt contributed with an eagle on the 7th hole but it was the girls who did most of the work.

Charles Herbert(18) Ross Birch(9) and Pete Hamlett(6) also scored much more heavily on the front nine and were delighted with second place.

Wrexham’s Paul Fell (6) teamed up with old Nigel Ashton(12) Paul Mullen(12) and Ben Kinsey(6) from Huyton and Prescot. The likeable quartet thought they had blown it with 3 points on their final hole but they were delighted to take 1st prize. Well played chaps.

Maxitours at perfect Prestbury

The last time we visited lovely Prestbury in March we had to wait for the snow to clear before we could play. Today the sun was cracking the flags and the course was in superb order. Head Green keeper Mark Crossley is widely regarded as the best in the business and no one was arguing with that statement today.
Chorleys’ Terry Hines loved the greens ‘ I haven’t seen better surfaces in a long time and it’s still May- unbelievable!’ Beamed the Lancastrian.
All the staff at this great course are excellent and it is also always a pleasure to have a chat with the highly respected Club Professional Nick Summerfield.

The greens were running at eleven on the stimpmeter but this didn’t stop Frank Hindle from knocking his putt in for a two on the signature short 17th hole. Playing partner Richard Palmer told me that if Franks ball hadn’t hit the hole it would still be rolling now.

John Hilditch is a great bloke but it was surprising to see that he was on the card far more than usual today. Unfortunately, after closer inspection it wasn’t because John was playing some breath-taking golf – his partner was forced to retire after 5 holes with a bad back so it was only him scoring.
‘Every cloud has a silver lining!’ Chuckled the wealthy estate agent.

Big Frank Moore has such a strong grip it is rumoured that he opens jam jars for a living. With his white knuckled putting action he lacked a bit of touch on the greens and managed a career best nine three putts on the lightning fast surfaces. Luckily he had a good partner and he scraped into the top ten.
Dutchman Ben Aardewerk from Lymm GC always comes first in his Clubs diary. He doesn’t very often come first in the Club competitions. He left his ‘A’ game at home once again and finished a very average forty third place today.
David Kelly(9) and the new Knutsford Golf Club Captain John Atkin(17) finished in 5th place after an excellent 22 points on the tougher back nine. John lost a Captain-pro challenge match on Sunday but he made the most of having a good partner today.
Bramalls Peter Maher(17) and Neil Higgins(12) continued their good form with 4th place on 40 points.
French speaking Louis Troalen(16) and Robbie Brown(6) were standing on the 18th tee with 41 points preparing their winners speech. Unfortunately, the ghost of Jean Van de Velde descended and they both shanked their way to a disappointing no score and 3rd place.

Tony Jennison(6) and Dan Moore(23) from New Mills descended from the hills and played some great golf to secure 2nd place. An impressive 24 points on the front nine was followed by a slightly jittery 19 on the back nine.

Winning today was Chapel En Le Frith’s intellectual Tim Spencer(20) and Brendan Poynts (12). They rolled in some great putts and Tim told me afterwards that he didn’t want to sound big headed but they could have had an even bigger score as they missed three short ones. Thanks for that Tim we feel really sorry for you. Well played chaps I am glad you had a great day.

Maxitours at wonderful Wilmslow

Wilmslow was in great condition for todays’ first Maxitours event of the Summer.

The course is one of the best draining in Cheshire and Eric Blake was delighted to see his badly hit shots scamper down the dry fairway rather than come to a grinding halt in a deep puddle as they have done for the past six months at other courses. Thanks to Head Green Keeper Steve Oultram and his excellent team for all their hard work.

Wilmslow also has award winning Caterers and the Professional team is perhaps the best in the local area -thanks to everyone at the Club for looking after us so well.

Steve Mattinson plays in one of the older Maxitours teams ‘We’ve all missed outpatients appointments to play at Wilmslow today- but it was well worth it!’ said the likeable Mere man.

There was quite a lot of wind once again for our players to contend with.
‘Did you struggle in the breezy conditions today?’ I asked Frank Hindle
‘I never struggle with my golf, I just pick my ball up Tim.’ replied Frank. I like your style Frank.

I asked John ‘glass half empty’ Farnsworth if he had played well. He was more positive than usual.
‘I wasn’t too disappointed’ He replied.

Dave Dean’s team came into the Clubhouse and told me that they had ‘Ripped it to shreds’ out there this afternoon. Unfortunately, they were talking about what they did to their scorecard after they struggled to just 62 points.

Milkman Jeff Ratcliffe(6) has done three rounds in one day. The first two were delivering in Ashton in Makerfield but his 3rd round was the most productive as he helped his team into 4th position with 81 points

Third place went to Tony Jennison(6), Dan Moore (23) Gary Smith(9)and Richard Blackwell(13). They picked up just three points on both of the closing holes to throw away a well deserved victory.

In 2nd place was the Bramall team of Les Russon(12), Rob Kenyon(16), Steve Merricks(5) and Ken Clarke(14) who were also surprised that their 83 points was placed so highly. Rob has asked me not to mention his missed two foot putt at the last.

Wrexham based Paul Fell(6) Tony Hereford (16) Ken Jones(20) and John Evans(12) earned their first Maxitours victory after some excellent putting. They scored 6 points on their closing hole to pip the rest of the field. Well played chaps.
