Maxitours at pristine Prestbury

Prestbury Golf Club’s excellent reputation continued to grow as a truly magnificent course was presented to Maxitours competitors today. Thanks to Mark Crossley and his hard working team for their skilful preparation- these guys are right at the very top of their profession.

‘The course was awesome- but my golf was gruesome.’ Admitted Bob Sinclair after his round.
‘Those greens are a delight, it’s great to hit a good putt and watch it roll smoothly to the hole’ said short game wizard Paul Browne.
‘I’ve just come back from playing seven courses in Spain and none of them were as good as that!’ said Tim Spencer.

Prestbury is so good even the Secretary turns up for work in a porsche. Host professional Nick Summerfield is also a great man and very highly thought of by all of his peers.

The catering at Prestbury is up to the same high quality as the golf course and head chef Richard served us very well indeed.

‘Absolutely beautiful’ said wide eyed Richard Palmer after his round.
‘I’m glad you enjoyed the course’ I replied
‘No -I’m talking about that female tour pro Amy Boulton who was having a practice round in front of us’ corrected the Blackburn man.

There were a couple of medical conditions coming to light on the Prestbury course:
Paul Evans team think he might be a dyslexic golfer . ‘He couldn’t read the greens.’ they declared after struggling to 61 points.
Mark John’s team tell me that they think he could have developed golf tourettes ‘He can’t stop involuntary swearing after each missed putt ‘.

The last time Phil Smeather’s hit a purple patch was when his ball disappeared into a clump of Bluebells last Spring. The classy 6 handicapper was on it today however playing his first six holes in two under par. Despite dropping a couple of shots late on in his round the gentle giant was delighted to be playing good golf again.

The scoring was tricky on this Harry Colt masterpiece and it just shows that a well designed golf course doesn’t need to be over 7000 yards to be a top championship venue.
Roy Ainsworths team ‘ripped it up today ‘ unfortunately they were talking about their scorecard which disappeared into a bin.

Rob Platt lives ‘ower in’t Barnsley’ His team played ‘greeet’ today and they loved the course and especially the firm and very fast greens ‘By eck those greens was as hard as a pit mans hat’ said Rob after his round. The Northerners were delighted to finish 4th with 81 points.

The Cheadle team led by Tony Stiles(13) and Tony Rains(22) finished 3rd with 82 points. The 17th hole was playing the toughest on the course . Mick Fenton(6) was on the back of the green and his putt slipped narrowly past the hole only to disappear over the green and finish 60 yards away. Dave Chambers(12) watched him do it and then to his teams disbelief repeated the feat himself as they narrowly missed out on top spot by a single point!

Ged Elton(15)and his Matlock team of Neil Fenner(9) Mark Berrisford(6) and Chris Beakey(14) finished late in the day and were amazed that there 82 points was good enough to snatch 2nd place. Retired Elton worked for ‘Bosch’ and when he plays golf his ball is normally in the ‘busch’ but he played the tough back nine well to help his team into 2nd.

Retired Tim Spencer(19) from Chapel en le Frith and Astbury’s Ron Sloane(19) normally play golf ‘purely for social reasons.’ This can be translated as ‘We are not good enough to win a prize’. In ten years playing Maxitours events Ron has won a dodgy shirt and I think I gave Tim a pair of socks for his birthday because I felt sorry for him. On the first they were more than surprised when two of them chipped in for 8 points. They were then hanging on to a good score by the skin of their teeth for the next seventeen holes. They scrapped their way to victory with 83 points Mark Saxon(21) and Paul Higgs(13) completed the shell shocked quartet. Well done guys I am delighted for you.

Maxitours at stunning Sandiway

Perfect golfing conditions greeted Maxitours players in deepest Cheshire at Sandiway Golf Club this morning.

A gentle zephyr, fast running fairways and immaculate greens meant a great days golf was enjoyed by all.

The course really was pristine and a number of players were visiting the course for the first time.
‘That is an amazing course- I am definitely going to bring my Captains away Day here!’ said Mark Harding.

Thanks also to the catering staff who fed and watered us all so well throughout the day.

Jack Coleman and his senior team have been hibernating this Winter but they soaked up the sunshine and enjoyed the first event of what should be a great Summer season ‘That was wonderful’ said Jack after his round.

Barry Meagher is a lovely chap and I had a nice chat with him after his game. He is a modest man but I learnt that he was an international badminton player in his younger days. He is famous within the badminton circuit for his drop shots. He certainly had plenty of dropped shots today as he could only manage 34points and a share of 65th place.

I am easily confused with names especially when Wilmslow’s Tom Davis(12) was playing in his first Maxitours event and he checked in with his younger brother Guy who is the spitting image of him and even wears the same glasses. The third member of the team arrived and I was amused to learn that it was his identical twin brother Hugh(14). The other team member Mo Yousef claimed to be a fourth adopted brother -but I think he was pulling my leg. Tom and Hugh were delighted to finish in 5th place.

Nic Hercules(15) looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders playing alongside erratic Alan Pratt (26) He needed all his strength as he carried his partner well to finish in 4th place.

The only Lady golfer in the field led the way for much of the morning after attractive Karen Taylor(16) from Haydock Park and partner Peter Bean(10) recorded an impressive 45 points- they eventually had to settle for 3rd place.

Maxitours favourite Lewis Marland (14) teamed up with Paul Cain(15) and they were delighted to finish in a season best 2nd place also with 45 points. On the back nine they had three 1 point holes, three 3 point holes and an incredible three 4 point holes to score 24 and win the back nine play off in style.

Hale’s Brian Greenbank(6) and John Newton(18) took the honours with a terrific 47 points. A great team effort saw the likeable duo play the tough Sandiway par threes in two under par. Greenbank is a solid player and picked up more shots with impressive birdies on the tough 7th and tricky 17th hole. Well played chaps -great win.

Maxitours at Classic Conwy

True seaside links conditions greeted Maxitours competitors at Conwy this morning. Immaculate greens, very firm fairways and a stiff breeze made things interesting and hugely enjoyable on this highly rated Welsh Classic.

‘That course was in super condition’ said respected Chris Brown ‘Unbelievable!’
‘That is the best track I’ve played all year’ beamed knowledgeable Brian Greenbank.
Thanks to everyone at Conwy for your superb hospitality- what a great venue!

I told Mark Rogers that a good imagination was required to play this top links course in the wind as a variety of shots would be called upon ‘That should suit my team mate Graham Brown – he has a very good imagination- he’s actually convinced himself that he is a good golfer.’

Peter Veitch is normally a straight hitter but he got blown off the course a couple of times today. He sat in the corner of the clubhouse after his round pulling thorns out of every orifice of his body muttering ‘bloody gorse bushes!’

Roy Ainsworth from Antobus nearly turned up late as he had an emergency appointment at the dentist this morning . His pal told him he had blue tooth so he thought he’d better get it checked out.

Dave Harlow is also famous for his one liners – ‘My team and I held a minutes silence on the course at 11 o’clock – its my wedding anniversary today!’

It was great to see Brendan McNamara the old Steward at Hale Golf Club playing today. Everyone fondly knows him as Mac. Next year he is honoured to be Captain of Conwy Golf Club, his wife is match Secretary so next year they will have 2 parking spots at the Club. ‘The problem is that we only have one car!’ chuckled Mac.

In today’s event John Allman’s team hit a large VARIETY of bad shots as they recorded 57 points.

Massively underrated nice guy Bob Sutton(21) was superb at Conwy today and his Captains performance inspired John Atkin(20), David Kelly(10) and Dave Harlow(17) into an impressive 5th place finish.

The tough conditions were always going to suit Lancashire legend Trevor Foster(+1). He led his less talented team of Peter Cross(12), Pete Ledger(18) and Anthony Wilson(10) into 3rd place with 78 points.

Glossops big hitting Eddie Frost(scr) birdied the tough 17th and then drove through the back of the 364 yard 18th hole. His chip then ‘slam dunked’ it’s way into the hole for an eagle to earn his team a share of 3rd place and win some balls in the sweep. Dave Bolton(10) and Mike Sallabank(8) completed the team.

Jim Clarke’s(10) attention seeking Knutsford team surprised themselves with a top two finish. ‘Can you please give us a mention in the report for a change?’ begged Jim ‘You can write about my strong front nine if you want’.

‘Don’t forget about my par at the tough first hole’ pleaded Jim Kenyon(16)
‘What about my remarkable birdie on the long tenth?’ requested Pete Booth(15)
‘Did you hit any good shots today?’ I asked 4th team member Mark Haggerty(14) who was hiding gingerly behind his pint of beer. ‘No. But I am a very good dancer- you could write about that?’ he suggested after a great deal of thought.

Perfume importer Ian Ainsworth(13) came up smelling of roses again. His Hazel Grove team battled to the turn in 37 points but then came into bloom on the back nine returning with 45 points. Even Geoff Haynes(7) had back to back birdies and he’s normally hopeless. Ray Stringer(19) and Trevor Harrison(10) completed the quartet. Great golf guys, well played!

Thanks to all who played today, to get well over 100 golfers travelling to Wales is terrific so thank you very much.

Maxitours at the Vale of Llangollen

The cherry blossom was out in all it’s Spring glory in the Llangollen valley as over 100 Maxitours players enjoyed this Welsh masterpiece. Everyone agreed that it was well worth the journey over the border.

Thanks to all at the club for looking after us so well throughout the day.
The bacon baps are the best in the business and they were up to their usual standard. Graham Young doesn’t have a lock on his fridge and he set a new Maxitours record with three golf club meals in five hours as he enjoyed the Llangollen fayre before, after and during his round.

It is Phil Okill’s birthday today and he is very proud of the fact that he shares his special day with Her Majesty the Queen. By an amazing coincidence his golf sweater was the same shade of lilac as the Queen’s birthday outfit. If you look closely his hair is also the same colour as the Queen with a very subtle blue rinse.

Dave Stanhope is nicknamed ‘The sheriff’ by his team. ‘We call him that because it is the opposite to a bandit- I can’t remember the last time he played to his handicap’ remarked his mate Dave Antrobus. His team finished a lowly 22nd place

It was great to see Stockport’s Dave Peel(+1) playing in Maxitours again. He has recently become the most capped Cheshire player in history after representing his county 188 times (they only play 8 matches a year so it is some feat). A solid performance saw him finish in 7th’

Top Liverpool solicitor Jim Rymer’s(18) high quality Heswall team pipped 5 other teams into third place as they scored 82 points. Bob Mottershead(12), John Dickenson(18) and Paul Lord(4) completed the quartet.

Second place went to the in -form Richard Blackwel(12)l, Andy Hamlett(8), John Hilton(12) and million dollar Steve Austin(8).

Ian Bartholomew(4) was held up at Welsh immigration control but just made his 11am tee time. The Prestbury player is a class act and he started off with three birdies to give his team a great start. Property magnates John Hilditch(11) , Paul Smith(11) and Simon Walton(13) all played well to give them a convincing first win of the season. Great golf chaps well played.

Dave Beard struggled his way around Llangollen and his shoulders were definitely sagging as I watched him approach the 18th tee after failing to finish the 17th hole. With what can only be described as a miracle shot I watched Dave’s ball draw onto the green and settle 6 inches from the hole as he took nearest the pin.

In the Clubhouse after play Dave was talking everyone through his 4 iron shot and his team mates made a sharp exit.

Four hours later as the bar maid tried to pull down the shutters at the end of a long day Dave asked her ‘Did you hear about my tee shot on the last ?’

Many thanks to all who played today,
Yours in Golf, Tim

Results from deliriously fine Dunham Forest

Room for 2 teams next Friday at lovely Llangollen!!

Maxitours at deliriously good Dunham Forest

Dunham Forest was in great condition for the today’s Maxitours event. While a few local courses are struggling to get some early season growth Dunham was in really tip top condition:

‘That were greet’ said Barnsley’s Rob Platt.
‘Rather Splendiferous’ said Vale Royal’s well spoken Dave Antrobus

Thanks to everyone at this great venue for all your hospitality, the whole set up really is first class.

Nobody believed Sergio Garcia could win a major with that putting stroke and he defied the odds with a great performance on Sunday night. I’m not a particularly emotional bloke(according to my wife) but it nearly brought a tear to my eye to see him achieve his lifetime ambition. Colin Berry also has a desperate putting stroke and it is rumoured that he used to work at the Birds food factory -stirring custard. His partner Steve Aspinall was also in tears after Colin missed a another hatful of putts.

It was great to see big and kind hearted Phil Smeathers back in action after a recent illness. His team mates tell me that they have really missed all his swing tips, advice and negative comments.

Barry Simpson lost his voice before he went out to play, ‘He normally plays like Charlie Chaplin’ said partner Roy Ainsworth ‘Today he sounded like him as well.’

The event scoring was excellent with fast running fairways, preferred lies and a very talented field. Top Cheshire barrister Nick Freeman(3)- aka ‘Mr loophole’ was playing in his first Maxitours today. Unfortunately he is slightly better at finding loopholes than he is golf holes and he had to settle for a share of 18th place.

Mike Spencer(12) has just finished a two year project building his new mansion in the shadow of the Great Orme overlooking Conwy golf Club. The Bramall man was in the shadow of his illustrious playing partner Joe Kirwan(5)this morning who birdied the 7th, 8th and 9th holes in a very impressive display. They were delighted to finish in 6th place.

Tony Doige(12) is a motivational speaker by trade but he was left speechless after collecting just 4 points in their closing 3 holes to narrowly miss out on the main prizes as they finished in 5th place also with 45 points. He was playing with Mike cocker (12).

Grange Park’s Andy Jackson(5) and Billy Rawsthore(6) love Dunham Forest and they were leading for much of the day with a terrific 46 points. Billy collected 4 birdies in his opening nine holes.

Sale Golf Club’s Andy Bentley(14) and Darren ‘White pants’ Jones(17) were close to their first victory after also collecting 46 points. They were non the less delighted with a first ever podium finish due to a strong back nine.

Retired Ian Neilson(27) from Shaw Hill used to run a multi million pound diary product business and he teamed up with milkshake parlour owner Mark Birtwistle(10). Ian ‘creamed’ his drive down the 11th hole to set up a five point birdie. Seventy year old Ian did most of the damage and Mark came in on the ‘udder’ holes. They managed to hold their ‘bottle’ with a cool par down the last and they gave each other a ‘pat’ on the head as they walked off the last green.

Taking first place with his first victory in over a year were home wine brewing kit supplier Richard Blackwell(12) and ex- European table tennis champ John Hilton(12). Hilton is a class act and under pressure you want him on your side. He chipped in for a birdie on the 17th when his partners ball was pinging and ponging deep in the Dunham woods.
Congratulations chaps great golf.

Many thanks to everyone for your terrific support, Tim
